Captured for Interrogation

Nikolai stood behind Lydia, forcing her to look forward, and addressed the camera. "Hello, Sergei. If you're seeing this it means your precious daughter had been captured yet again. This time we will not be so lenient. We have already destroyed all documents declaring who she is. So now the question remains; what to do with her? " He stepped away so only he could be visible. I could let her go, but that's no fun and you wouldn't learn anything. Maybe I could take her into Baltimore and give her over to drug lords. That would be very fun for everyone. I could keep her here and make her life nothing but pain until she begs for death..." He pulled out the pistol and fired a shot. "Well, I guess that decision wasn't hard at all. Goodbye, Sergei." He motioned to cut the camera.

Alexis cut the camera and quickly went over and released Lydia, who slumped in her arms as she cried. "It's okay, it's okay," she whispered in Russian. She had to sit down on the ground as the room started spinning but still she comforted Lydia.

Lydia held onto her and continued to cry, feeling strangely comforted by the American holding her, speaking in Russian. She realized that Nikolai was a lucky man indeed and she cried harder.

Nikolai came over himself, embracing both women an sandwiching Lydia between them. Nothing needed to be said for a while. As Lydia calmed down, he turned to Alexis. "You aren't driving with that head wound. I'll take us back to our apartment as we can figure out what to do from there."

"I'm fine," Alexis said quietly. "It's not that bad."

Lydia looked up at Alexis and asked, "What's going to happen to me?"

"I can try to get you a desk job somewhere in Baltimore," Alexis told her softly, stroking her hair. "As to where you can live? I keep this house aptly stocked for things such as this. You can use it until you get your own place."

Lydia hugged her. "Thank You," she whispered in Russian.

"It's my pleasure."

Alexis looked back over at Nikolai. "I can drive," she insisted before leaning up against the wall.

"And I assume you think you are supporting the wall and not the other way around?" Nikolai said, sternly. "I will drive and you can shoot anyone else who tries to kill us." He listened and heard sirens. Already cops were looking for shooters. It would be tricky getting out of here with their cover intact.

"There's a back door, I'll take care of it," Alexis said. "Lydia, I need for you to go upstairs and go to sleep, alright sweetie? You've had a rough day and you need the sleep. There's food in the fridge for you, if you need anything my cell number is written by the answering machine."

Lydia nodded and went upstairs, where she found a bedroom and fell asleep without even undoing the covers.

Alexis in the meantime was on her cell phone, where she explained that there was a misfire in her gun as she was cleaning it, and that all was good. The police believed her and she hung up and the sirens were turned off.

"I'll go dispose of the body," she whispered and she gently worked her way to a standing position and she started walking carefully.

Nikolai went with her, knowing she was being tougher than she was feeling. "I'll get the arms," He said, picking up the dead weight. They carried him into the back yard and dug a hole for him, then buried the body. Nikolai watched for weakness in Alexis the whole time, since he was sure he would have to stop her from hurting herself further.

Alexis was feeling dizzy and woozy, but she stuck it out and helped bury the body, not showing Nikolai any signs of weakness. She was feeling weak and vulnerable, and she hated that.

Mind over matter, mind over matter, she thought as she went through the motions. She smiled at Nikolai when they were done. She knew she wouldn't be able to hold the ruse up for much longer. "Nicky?" she asked weakly. "I don't feel too good."

"OK, maybe we shouldn't go anywhere tonight until you feel better," Nikolai said, carrying her inside. He took her upstairs and laid her in bed next to Lydia. "I'll keep watch while you rest and wake you up once an hour until you feel better."

Alexis nodded and winced, curling up and falling into a fitful sleep, waking up every half hour and and tossing and turning.

Nikolia kept watch over the girls. He pulled a blanket over them and sat up watching a little TV in between checking up on Alexis and Lydia. In the morning, he entered the bedroom and sat down on the bed. He laid back in between the two women as they woke up.

Alexis had woken up for the thirtieth time and saw Nikolai between her and Lydia. Lydia was still sleeping and Alexis curled up next to him, resting her head on his chest.

Once Alexis woke up, Nikolai gave her a relieved look. "Can you take watch while I sleep some? I took care of you two all night."

"Sure," Alexis whispered, kissing his cheek. "Go to sleep."

She gently got out of bed, her head wound still making her a little dizzy but she took baby steps and went into the bathroom and washed the blood of her body and inspected the wound. It looked bad, but she would feel better soon.

She took up a watch, sipping on coffee and eating a box of granola bars, going upstairs every hour to check on Nikolai and Lydia quietly.

Nikolai awoke and found himself alone in the bed. He sat bolt upright and checked his weapons and found them where they belonged. Maybe he could trust Lydia. As Alexis walked back in, he asked, Is Lydia with you? I must have slept through her getting up."

Alexis nodded. "She just went into the bathroom. Poor girl wanted a bath," she explained. She walked over to Nikolai and gently kissed him.

"I don't blame her. She just collapsed after we tortured her, sweat tears and all." Nikolai said. "Do you feel as bad as I do about last night?"

"I'm going to see if Lydia needs anything before we leave," Alexis said. "Then we're going to go home and I'm going to see if I can get us on the fastest plane to Sin City."

She hugged him tighter. "Although I think we'll be taking the dungeon of the itinerary."

"Definitely," Nikolai said. He didn't want to see that kind of thing for a good long while. He set about packing the equipment they brought in last night and loaded it into the truck.

Lydia came out of the bathroom after Nikolai left, wearing some clothes she had found. She smiled nervously at Alexis. "I want to thank you, for most everything. Not St. Petersburg, no, but for everything else. You are truly an enigma," Lydia told her in Russian.

Alexis smiled and stroked Lydia's face. "I thank you for the sentiment. Too bad we had met on such bad terms."

Lydia smiled. "It gave me courage, in a way, though. So I guess I'm thankful for that."

"Sometimes, our worst moments are blessings in disguise." Alexis hugged the young woman. "Is there anything you need before Nikolai and I leave?"

Lydia shook her head. "I'll be fine."

"Keep in touch, okay?"

Lydia nodded and hugged Alexis warmly. She returned the hug and kissed Lydia's cheek. "I don't know when we'll be back from Nevada, but if you need anything, give me a call."

"Will do," Lydia smiled. "And keep a strong hold on Nikolai; you caught a catch most KGB women would die for, myself included."

Alexis chuckled. "Will do."

Alexis headed out to the car, where Nikolai was packing and slid into the passenger's seat.

Nikolai hopped in to the drivers' seat and headed for home. "Let's pack and get out of here," he said, sounding worn out.

Alexis leaned up against the closed door, feeling woozy again. "Can we catch some cuddles and sleep?" she asked weakly. "My vision's gone blurry."
