A distress call from the pergium production station on Janus Six has brought the Enterprise to that long-established colony. Mister Spock, Doctor McCoy, Nurse Chapel and I have beamed down to meet with Chief Engineer Vanderberg, administrative head of Janus Six.
Vanderberg was a shadow of the man I once knew at Starfleet Academy. Doctor McCoy examined him and concluded he was suffering from "unrequited lust", and the only words out of his mouth were "Horta, sweet Horta". Analyis of the Janus Six logs indicate that Vanerberg has been visiting sector 34324.11 on a daily basis, and returns with burns on his genetalia and his face covered with a sticky, red liquid. I've asked Doctor McCoy to keep monitoring Vanderberg, and Mister Spock to analyze the logs. Nurse Chapel and I will visit sector 34324.11 tomorrow to investigate what might have caused Vanderberg so much distress.

Nurse Chapel and I visited sector 34324.11 today. We explored for three hours before we found the cave. We entered, and came across a highly intelligent, silicon-based species, that was capable of tunneling through solid rock.
