When I was a senior in High School, ( yes we are talking about waayyy back when ... ) there were the usual cliques of kids, the jocks, the hoods, the brains, the geeks and the other assorted misfits. I was one of the few who fit in anywhere in any of those groups. But never at the core center of any of them.
One young man became tired of seeing all the usual High School attentions focused on the so called " beautiful people " and created an alter ego.
Captain Carnation stalked the hallways of Mattoon Senior High in search of girls who looked liked they could use some TLC, and he swooped down upon them, planted a kiss on their cheek and presented them with a carnation.
Now that I am old and senile, I can not think of his real name. I would have to search through my year book to find him, but for some reason I was thinking of Valentines Day and how lonely they can be when you are young, and I remembered Captain Carnation and I remember how special I felt those times he sought me out to present me with a carnation and a kiss.
Sometimes the sweetest memories we have are not the biggest ones, just the little thoughtful caring ones from people we don't even know that well.
Captain Carnation where ever you are now, and what ever you are doing with your life ... I hope you know that somewhere, someone remembers you and how special you made so many girls feel 21 years ago.
