You two are sweet together, Pop.

Welcome back, Cdog. Pop has missed you like crazy.

Holy shit, tacklehugs! I am down! I am ringed about with violence and love, each commingled with each, and am like to drown therein.

Er sumthin.

a sketchbook page from the trip. This was all ballpoint, casual doodling, in the airport on Miami.

Well he hasn't answered my mail yet so, fuck him, and the Shanglan he rode in on.

Our Airport Authority must be doing something wrong if you were able to sketch in that hellhole. The good thing about North Bolivia International Airport is the cafe con leche. The bad thing is the actual airport.

Okay, another stab at the 'attaching files' thing. I need to attach files.

That airport sketch. Here we go. I will get this.

All fuckin right! About time. :nana:

The kid was sporting really buff arms and shoulders. And he was checking out this arse across the room. All ballpoint, like I say, in doodle mode. No returning, no erasing, all adjustment done with obfucatory squiggles. Quick thing, six or ten minutes.

P, darling, You touch my heart.

I had a real breakthrough on this trip. I did sketch after sketch, all from life, all less than ten minutes. The naive kids I was drawing expected the result to look like them, to be instant portraiture. It was pretty intense pressure, but I shocked myself by being able to do it-- at least, to their satisfaction, and to the satisfaction of their friends. I didn't give myself credit for being that facile. But I wowed them. I'd draw one, rip it off and hand it to him; draw another, give her the result. I did a dozen or so altogether. All completely satisfactory. It blew me away.

The hardest was this exquisite girl named Aurora. Really good looking people, with no "hook" to hang a caricature on, everything in balance, true beauty-- this is a subtle thing and very nerve-wracking to capture. I caught a likeness of Aurora in something like six minutes. She looked spectacular, and the drawing was light and easy. I outdid myself. She has it now, of course.

In fact, I have remarkably little in the way of artwork to show for this experience..

Here's a photo of Aurora. My wife took it, and the bright sky washed her out. She still looks really wonderfully beautiful. I did a quickie portrait of both Aurora and Telma, whom you see here, however dimly. She was not in her school uniform for the sketch, but in a simple top and skirt. She's fifteen, and will certainly be a great beauty in a few years.
