Can't seem to get the scores I want

My scores are good- 4.14 stuff like that, but I want more!!!! I've read the how too's and done some other stuff, meanwhile my SO posts a story he doesn't even think is that good because he wrote it in the middle of the night, and it scores way higher. ok, i'll admit it, I'm jealous! And also, I had a couple I thought where pretty hot, but didn't manage to get marked with an "H" can anyone tell me what they are looking for when they mark them "H" or "E"? I'm becoming somewhat competative over this, and its driving me crazy!!!

I didn't notice that before - does H stand for Hot? What does E stand for?
Part of the problem may be that sometimes the vol. readers don't really offer a lot of help. Instead of correcting a word spell check missed it would be nice if they would offer better suggestions when the story starts to bog down with details and such. I hope that wasn't a run on sentence

As soon as a story has 10+votes that average 4.5 or higher, a little red "H" pops up next to it. It is totally based on the votes readers give it. It can be there in the morning, and disappear by evening. Having that little "H" does help a story get red, IMO, because it draws the reader's eye to it. However, there have been people who suspect that others purposely vote down stories to rid it of the valued "H". (Not sure if I follow along with that idea)

The "E" is attributed to a story by Laurel. I don't know what her criteria is for that. Perhaps a story that is different, or very well written in her opinion. It would be an honor, certainly, and a little more difficult to attain.

You will find some stories that have a little "W" next to them as well. This indicates that it is an award winner. Another honor.

So, "H" mean "hot" - as per what the readers have determined.
And "E" means "Editor" - as in editor's choice.

You know, what I have found out is that sometimes a story that is not written well but is a good wank story will score very high. Just people voting with their hormones, that's all. Hey, most of the stories here are read to get off, you know? Write what you feel comfortable with and know that the more you do this, the more accomplished you become. Also, with more feedback, you will learn what readers are looking for.

Seriously though, I think it's probably a combination of many things - quality of writing, imagination, originality, length of your story, etc ... And probably in that order.

Thanks Chelle for clearing that up for us. I just had my first ever story posted today and it seems to be doing well. I will admit that I am very curious to see how it scores, though it was something I simply spat out onto the keyboard with no editing. I plan on expanding on my ideas substantially for my next attempt. I wouuld appreciate any constructive critisicm if you have time to check it out, I would sincerely appreciate it.

The vast majority of My stories have H's next to them or did at one point. I still think with over 40 stories My avg. is at 4.55. I honestly can't tell you what the difference is. I find that certain categories get more reads than others and once you have posted a handful of stories and get a small following and people who enjoy your work they get an H fast. Then more people read them because they have an H.

There will always be others who just because you have a H beside your story will vote it down but that doesn't matter a lot. Take pride more in feedback and even dare to ask your readers that give return addresses what they would like to see you tackle next. If you can please some of them they will surely pass the word on to other lit readers they know in forum or chat rooms.

That's just My take though. I suppose for the greater scheme of things I have just been lucky. LOL. So keep trying and eventually it will work out and you will have a hot story.

I would just like to say it took five stories I think before I had a small fan base and then had a hot story so it all depends on luck and how good you are. I happen to have read your story and thought it was good.

A good story takes the reader visually along the writer's path. What often makes for good masturbation material also makes for a good story.
There has to be some creative skill at work, after all how many terms can be applied to describe a pussy?
Simple, creative and always visual seems to work.

Damn how did I forget to mention the stories that make a reader get their rocks off just happens to be really highly ranked usually lol. Good grammar and spelling mistakes are another don't for stories.

I have read a couple of your stories and agree with Wispersecret and Sexychele's assessments. I understand your frustration with wanting good scores. I want them too, and more, I want people to enjoy reading my stories. You have received some very good advice from them and I know you are working on improving your writing using those comments. Keep it up, keep working on the punctuation, spelling, and flow and I'm sure you will be well received. Heck, if I was having sex and received a 4.5 instead of a 5, I would fell like a success!
And, please edit out that "ASCII" from your quotes. That was a description, not something to be inserted there.
I, personally, would feel on top of the world to know that Wispersecret or SexyChele gave me a "5" on one of my stories.
It would mean so much more to know that someone who knows the difference liked it.

I read your stories and enjoyed them. I can't tell you how to get better scores, not with any assurance - that would suggest that I know what the readers on this site really want. I have only posted one story so far, and while I have a 4.64 rating and a little "H" after 14500 reads, I'm still chalking that up to beginner's luck. Without commenting on what other people like, here are my comments. You have a tendency to jump into the middle of the story - which satisfies the urge to get right to the sex I guess. You should develop the characters first, make them real for the reader before they start seriously interacting. Tell us what makes them tick, what makes them human and real to us - this gives the reader a reason to care what happens to them. Your descriptions of the sex are great - very imaginative. I suspect you've had some experience yourself. Your dialogue feels a bit forced, or clipped. Think about how people really talk, it isn't usually in 5 word sentences. Not saying wordier is better, but you need to give enough to develop the characters. Whether it is the dialogue or narrative, you tend to stick to what I'd call the "play by play" - telling the reader what one person is doing and what they say as they do it. That is great as far as it goes. But the story will come alive better if you supplement that with insights into what the characters are thinking, why are they doing what they are doing, how do they feel as they do it. That is what will make the reader connect to your story - give them the details that allow them to relate - if not to feelings they've had themselves, then to feelings they've fantasized about having.
I hope this is helpful. Again, your stories are good, very imaginative and graphic. Keep writing! Scott

I don't mind that, becuause I think my stories are pretty good in that regard, but I've come to believe that those are the people who don't take the time to vote, so if they thougth your story was hot it doesn't reflect. But I have a writing coach now, plus listening to all your good advice, and I think it will really help my writing (both erotic and non-erotic) hugs all around.
