I cannot search new stories in the search area without writing something in the search bar

I had the same concern as Lectura. My main way of using Literotica is to check the "hot stories" button and sort by date. That filters for the highest-rated new stories. Previously I would not enter any term, so I knew I was reviewing all the 4.5+ rated stories in my preferred categories over a recent time period. I don't know how others identify and browse stories, but this method seems to work great for me.

However, the search recently started returning an error when I did this. I have taken to entering a single space in the search bar, but using "the" probably has a similar result.

Yes, the search page is broken.

The only way it works is if you enter a keyword. It's a very limited way for it to function, considering how it used to work.

Advanced searching is useless in its current state.

I hope fixing this is on the powers-that-be's list of things to repair, but I fear they have more immediate concerns to get to first, and that fixing the search is low priority...

If you want to search for selected categories or upload date or whatever, just press space once in the search area. Then hit enter. You`ll get all the stories ;)
This works with the advanced search option like it used to be.

The instructions above are a little confusing, but it would appear that the issue with the advanced search options not doing anything has been repaired. At least, I just tried my typical setup in "advanced search" and it functioned the way I've used it in the past. Thank you, whoever addressed the issue.
