Horrible. This morning I feel this terrible mix. There's Obama, who makes me proud of my country. And then there's prop 8, which makes me so ashamed. I imagine this is similar to how it felt with an FDR or a Kennedy. The president in the penthouse excites, but on the ground floor there are these bigots robbing people of their rights, keeping them segregated. And that embitters the sweet.

The U.S. has a way to go before we're a truly civilized country.

This is a setback, but it's not the end. Good always seems to triumph over ignorance and intolerance; we saw that last night. Try not to despair.

There are still 3-4 million absentee ballots to count, I understand. The difference is currently only about 52-48% on a total of 11M votes so far, so there is still a chance. I have high hopes (and admittedly low expectations, but wth?) that this one isn't really over yet.

It's incredible to me that a constitutional amendment can be passed on such a narrow margin. that's simply disgusting.

The next step is a restraining order in the Ninth District Federal Court on the grounds that it is in violation of the 14th Amendment. And in time, we will win. Think how long it took for anti-miscegenation laws to be struck down.

That's how it's done! Even if by only ONE vote. This IS America! GET OVER IT ALREADY!

Your caustic remark aside, the fact remains that in any progressive democracy an amendment to the constitution needs more than a simple majority. This a fact that has been overlooked or bypassed. It's the way a true democracy works. Some people need a civics lesson. This is what Wikipedia says about it:

"The constitutions of a great many nations provide that they may be amended by the legislature, but only by a special, extra large majority of votes cast (also known as a supermajority, or a "qualified" or "weighted" majority). This is usually a majority of two-thirds the total number of votes cast."

No dear, it's MY LIFE.

AND believe me, I have already begun working to overturn the thing in the next state elections. By one vote and you can bet that the MORMON FUCKING ASSHOLE CHURCH will suddenly complain about the insanity of CONSTITUTIONAL amendments passing by one vote.

I hereby promise and swear that I will NOT run Mormons off the road on their bicycles. But I will yell "HATER! BIGOT! GO HOME!" at them every time I see them.

Bingo.

This amendment to the state constitution is, in fact... unconstitutional.

So, no, it isn't "the way it's done," it's the way they did it.

Or, tried to do it. (Recount?)

Where do I sign?

We have not yet begun to fight. The earlier "referendum" a couple years ago passed with 61%. We have made up 9% in four years.

We will beat the bigots. We will teach our children love instead of hate. We will force them to spend their collection plate extortions on lawyers. We will be the change we expect to see in the world.

It will happen. It will happen in my lifetime. It will happen sooner, not later.

Do not despair.
