Has anyone on the board attempted candle making on their own? I love candles and am going to try to make some this weekend. I will admit to being creative-illiterate.. so any help is welcome. thanks!

My niece makes them as gifts.

One thing she does is to pour them onto wine glasses and paints a simple design on the side of the glass.

She also pour them into the big metal molds and addes shells and other things to the edges. These come out pretty but I love the ones in the glasses best.

What kind are you making? I can give a few basic pointers, but it helps to know what you are using and your general ideas.

I will tell you, though -- anchor your wicking as much in the center as possible, and keep it straight.

I have made them the colonial method by dipping wicks strung from a stick into a pot of hot wax. It takes a long time and I don't think that's the way you want to go, but if it is let me know.

tony_gam, there are devices you can get for dipping that keep the wick straight and uniform; it still takes time, but it isn't quite as difficult as dipping with just a stick. Also, while one rack is cooling, you can dip another. A friend of mine made the most beautiful beeswax tapers that way.

Have done the sand ones and many others but my favorites are the ones you do with a round base of one color and the wick then the several layers of other color and then cut out designs in the top layer. Makes a neat effect. I also like the color layer ones. I use foil and other things to give unusual texture to the sides. What can I say Michigan winters are long and the snow is deep when you are 14 and live with a 75 year old uncle with "old hippie" neighbors you do what you can to entertain yourself.

Ive dont the stickones, but all we did was melt the wax in a stockpot and keep dipping the wick

Thanks CreamyLady, but the historical site I frequent only allows wicks and sticks. But I would be interested in learning about the device you mentioned.

Wax, sticks and dipping wicks, does anyone else have the feeling this thread will turn sexual sooner or later;)

LOL, give it a few more posts Tony and itll come. :)

Good luck in the candlemaking TN!

Tina (for her professional candles) got the things at General Wax and Candle: http://www.genwax.com.

When she's doing Living History exhibits and Ren Faires, she does the stick and string; she takes a straight dowel, ties about ten or twenty wicks, and then weights each wick with a small stone.

She is also very picky about dyes; she uses only the powdered dyes and gets a very rich, true color.

Of course, she is a major perfectionist.

Sticks and wicks? Oh yes tony it DOES make me think of sex!

CL- don't burn your candles at both ends or else you won't know about that new job! :) (keeping fingers crossed for you, btw)

Thanks for starting this great thread TnVix. I don't have a creative bone in my body but I would love to be able to break my expensive habit at Yankee Candle. I think it's more addictive and expensive than cocaine or any other drug!

If I could make Buttercream, Christmas Cookie or Vanilla, I could save myself a ton of money.

I saw a program a looooong while back, where you put a candle in the centre of a dish, which was holding hot wax, and then lowered it into a deep bowl of cold water, causing the hot wax to rise and cool quickly in unusual shapes about the candle. Something I always wanted to try, but never got round to (yet).

give me a few times to experiment and I'll be the authority on candle-making!! *grin*

My mom actually have a small candle factory and shop around 70 miles from me here in Denmark. She makes several types of candles herself, and also buy some that are in the more unusual shapes.

When she makes the long slim ones that you put in candlestick she makes around 800 at a time.

There's around 100 candles on each wheel, and they have 8 wheels on a carousel.

They don't weigh the wicks down at all when they dip them, what they do is to let the wicks soak in the wax about 10 mins and then cool down before they start to dip them. It takes around 1½ hour to make the candles.

(PS: It's not my mom in the picture)

If you pour the wax into molds add some ice cubes in one and it will come out looking cool.....Sorta like swiss chesse....but cool..........

The problem I've run into making candles is adding the correct amount of hardeners, scent and dye to the piece of wax I'm melting. I've been told that weighing it is the most reliable method. I've also had trouble with the poured candle developing large craters in the tops of them. There is a term that is used to describe this, but I totally forget it now. There is also something I read to do to fix it, but forget that too right now.
I've made floating votives with little metal jello molds and big round candles with acrylic molds. Both aren't that difficult, but in the end you have to weigh the difficulty and inconvience against the cost of going and just buying candles. Buying them has been my choice as of late.
If this is something you'd like to persue, I'd suggest a trip to a local craft store, Davids, Ben Franklin or if you're a lucky girl a Hobby Lobby. There you should be able to find plenty of supplies and books to give you better instruction.
Good luck chicky!

I can turn it sexual if you let me drip hot wax on your belly.
