and instead say Fox Entertainment?

They aren't news, not in any credible sense of the word. They're no more journalism than a golf cart is an Indy 500 race car.

Fox News fought in court for the right to lie. Fact of history. They're not news. They're entertainment.

Only the Usual Suspects watch FOX. Obama was on FOX recently. You guys are too much.

The abolition of the Fairness Doctrine which had been the cornerstone of media regulation by the Reagan Congress and signed by Reagan predicated the rise of right wing media types such as Rush Limbaugh and the Fox News Network. Clinton, pushed the veto-proof majority in the Senate and Sen Phil Graham signed the Telecommunications Act of 1996 that put the final coffin nail in the right of the public to traditional reporting of the news.....
We've reaped what we've sown, and now, nonsense masquerades alongside fact as reportable and quality information......

Al Franken demands that FOX rent time to CNN and MSNBC so they can have some viewers, too. FOX sez it'll lose too much money from the loss of time for informercials.

LOST IN THE FUN HOUSE. Opinions Wanted.

Is LOST IN THE FUN HOUSE worth reading?

I remember when I went to the doctor a while ago, a specialist, not my regular one. The TV in the waiting room was set on Fox News and I was waiting in there for over an hour.

I had never before thought of going up and changing the channel on a TV in an office before but the thought occured to me that day and that's why I also noticed the sign asking patients to "Please Do Not Change The Television Channel"

What BS!

Someone is watching FOX or they wouldnt kick every network's ass.

I would change doctors

I had the same experience at the bank a few months ago. I was waiting in the lobby to see a loan officer and Fox News was on the television. I just got up and changed the channel. I didn't care if anyone complained or not, LOL. Oh, and I still got the loan :D

Haven't been back to that doctor since. Not particularly because of the TV thing but I didn't care for him in general.

I know a guy who went to McDonald's for lunch and they had a TV there turned to Fox News, he went and asked an employee if they could change the channel but they said the manager's policy that the station not be changed was explicit. So he never went to that particlular McDonald's again, there were plenty of others around to have lunch at.

I don't disagree with you except if you are saying what I said is BS. All I can say is the anecdotes I've posted are completely true.

I'll turn on Fox News and check it out but honestly I can't take more than a couple minutes if O'Reilly, Hannity, or Beck is on, sometimes less than that, just looking at Beck sometimes makes me want to retch.

I dont care for any of the FOX performers you cite; they discredited themselves with me long ago. And they exist to sell their books. They want Kool-Aid drinkers to buy their crappy, fantastical books. Theyre no better then the Clintons or most politicians.

That said, aint nobody tuned in to CNN, MSNBC, or AIR AMERICA. If Al Franken wants to be seen on tv he has to visit FOX. Katie Couric would zero audience if her mom didnt watch her show.

Of course they watch it. Lots and lots of people do.

Does that make it news?

FOX feeds their audience a narrative that confirms their beliefs. FOX makes them feel good about themselves and their self righteousness. It's like candy for sugar hooked kids.

And thus they watch, and FOX can sell ads.

That's all there is to it really. They have found a lucurative target group, and are chanting to it.

They're not the only ones doing it, nor the only ones calling opinion and commentary by other names to give them more 'thruthiness' (thanks for that one, Stephen Colbert) but they are the most obvious example of it right now.

Fux News is, in the essence, propaganda. They sell advertising that is propaganda for commercial purposes. They are good at it.

They are not "Fair or Balanced", that would be boring.

They gotta be the only news network doing THAT; doesnt seem fair.

The other News outlets have "Journalistic Standards" loose as they are.

After 30 seconds of Glen Beck it is obvious that Fux Knews doesn't concern itself with such things.

Well Balanced anyway

They gotta be the only news network doing THAT; doesnt seem fair.

This is scary JBJ, here we have an exampl;e of the "Intelligentsia" deciding what's news and what isn't and all the while saying that Fox News shouldn't be watched.

This is a Reichstagish moment. Achtung!

Neither Hannity nor Beck claim to be newscasters and go out of their way to say so and O'Reilly is an arrogant ass. Anyone watching him and not retching has a strong stomach for BS. Stronger than I have.

I suspect that none of the 'usual suspects' has yet learned that it's possible to change chanels, even remotely but what rhe hell, some people don't learn as quickly as others

Hyperbole much? This is a bunch of opinionated private citizens on a porn board engaging in amateur media criticism. Get over thyself.

There's some disconnect when people critisise Fox News for obviously biased opinionators who claim to be anything but. The real problem with Fox is that the regular news coverage is filtered to feed the pre set narrative. There's too much journalistically problematic symbiosis between reporting and commentary/punditry, all to stay in the narrative and not lose viewers/advertisers.

That, by the way, was me engaging in slightly more qualified media critisism. I've got a liberal arts bullshit degree in that kind of nonsens. Only use I havre for it is to post on web boards like this one. But at least it got me laid with the goth chicks in college.

Believe me, if they didn't know how to zap from Fox, they would have topped themselves by now.

Exactly. Liberals don't even need an equivalent media source to make us feel good about ourselves. That comes from within, it comes from what we know and have experienced.

Sure, we engage in the occasional two minute hate, but we don't need it injected into us 24/7 like the viewers of Fox do.

I fully intended my opening to be hyperbole and at least you're one who recognizes it when you see it.

I don't quite understand your second paragraph. Let me see if can tell you what I think you said. Fox News is filtered by it management so as to voice and instill its opinion into News Casts. In your opinon, this means what? This is a convoluted bit a verbiage LIAR. Let me know PM

If I'm correct in my assessment then we agree. Management filters the presentation and this is true at all networks (ABC,CBS, NBC, FOX,CNN, CNBC). Corporate management would be remiss if this weren't true.

Fox has been more successful at penetrating other networks supposed market and as a Libertarian I say "GO FOX' . ABC has been the most egregious violater of fair play. It has moved an entire operating system inside the White House. Hows that for cajones? GO ABC

Your statement implies that being a Libertarian precludes having integrity. While I'm sure there are Libertarians with integrity, there is no integrity in Fox News presenting propaganda as news in the actual news portion of their programming.

Fox News works off of daily talking points memos. Both their news and commentary shows are produced to support those talking points - regardless of whether or not they're factually accurate. You say "Go Fox News", I say "Go to hell, Fox News." Our country already suffers from a severe lack of informed citizens. Encouraging Fox News to further misinform the clueless might satisfy your Libertarian leanings, but it's not conducive to maintaining a functioning democracy. Of course, from what I gather listening to the rantings of Libertarians, they don't seem to be interested in maintaining a functioning democracy, in which case Fox News could be the antidote they're looking for.

Hear, hear....DZ.....it is amusing, amazing and appalling that these Foxites decry the loss of their 'rights' and the 'subversion of the constitution' - both FAUX NEWS 'talking points' but; this is one big BUT!; not one could quote nor could they properly distinguish either the 'Bill of Rights' or the 'Constitution' - this is the result of a secondary attack on the middle class by the Reaganites: Abolishing or limiting the teaching of 'Civics' in public school classrooms.....
An informed (read: emboldened - not enslaved) populace is the greatest threat posed to the Corporate interests. These are individuals, not sheep, who will question the crap being pumped out of their media and judge that 'information' with some qualitative criterion: What is the essence of this proposal? Who does it benefit and why? How much does it cost and to whom? Where did it originate?
An informed electorate is a powerful and compelling force - unfortunately, since the corporatists have seized the the means of dissemination, the message being disseminated is wholly theirs - as witnessed by the poor, benighted types like Loring2.....
We can only hope that some fictional means of salvation is possible because there is no actual, viable, medium that can save this country......................

No. The issue is the fact that Fox is presenting propaganda disguised as news. It's really very simple: News is factual and inclusive, propaganda is non-factual and selective - taking quotes out of context, putting a D next to an R's name when he's in the midst of a sex scandal. If Fox's slogan read: "Unfair and Unbalanced" there would be no problem.

Neither Hannity nor Beck claim to be newscasters and go out of their way to say so and O'Reilly is an arrogant ass. Anyone watching him and not retching has a strong stomach for BS. Stronger than I have.

As noted in previous posts, some people are not allowed to change channels. When this happens in a government building - the US Post Office for example - you have a situation where the government is disseminating propaganda disguised as news. This was very common in the Bush era. Every time I went to the post office and waited in line, I had to endure the histrionics of Fox News. Fortunately, these days, the Post Office TV is showing lame big three network shows, and the sound is off, so it's not a problem.

No one here is arguing that Fox News should be censored. We're simply pointing out the fact that it's not news, and presenting itself as a news outlet is deceptive, and probably in violation of FCC rules. Having worked in Master Control at a local TV station, we were required to put a disclaimer in front of infomercials. Fox News should be required to put a disclaimer in front of any program that looks like a news program but isn't.

Glen Beck and his ilk are a whole different discussion. Hate speech can be very powerful, as anyone who survived Hitler's Germany can verify. How we end up dealing with hate speech could make or break the future of this country. Anyone who looks at hate speech as if it's a harmless joke should ponder your quote from above, especially in a historical context:
some people don't learn as quickly as others
