What Amfig said. If I'm really, really, sick, like I have the flu or something, masturbating is not going to occur to me. If I have a cold, if I can achieve an orgasm, my sinuses will clear, if only for a little while.

Actually, I've had problems masturbating when under the weather. Say I have the cold, for instance. My head aches (but not a headache - ya know), my nose is stuffy and runny with occassional sneezes to boot. My body feels a little weak and a bit on the chilly side.

Now - if I do try to masturbate, like has been mentioned already on this thread, I do start to feel better, and it's not just the self-pleasing. My nose clears up and the sneezes subside. But if I were to masturbate forever my hand would fall off. So I eventually come.

Sure enough, fifteen minutes later, the sneezes and runny/stuffy nose return. Maybe even worse - but it's hard to gauge since the time self-pleasuring allows for a distorted view of how it once was.

My point is it seems to come back worse than before for whatever reason. And it's not like whacking off 'til I feel better is an option. Like schatz said, the body needs some rest too. I would imagine energy spent pleasuring could be better spent in helping to create white blood cells.

I have heard from several guy friends(when i played a drinking game in college) that masterbating when sick is not always a good idea. They told me that if you feel kinda low and lethargic it is not a good idea as sometimes afterwards you feel that you have used energy. If you have low energy to begin with, you will feel worse afterwards. If it is just a cold, I would not think that would warrent prevention.
