I'm working on a story to submit to this site. My computer says it's in microsoft 97 file? Will I be able to upload that here? Or do I need to start over and make sure it's a pdf? Any help would be great!

Best way I found is to cut the text from your WP screen and paste into the box on the Lit submission page.

If you are using a Windows computer, you should have a little program called Notepad. I recommend copying the entire story from your word processor, then pasting it into Notepad. That will strip off any formatting or goofiness. Then copy it from Notepad and paste it into the Lit submission box.

I also write in Word 97. As HP suggested, I just copy and paste directly from Word 97 into the submissions box and it's worked a charm hundreds of times. You do have to manually mark italics, though, because they don't hold (in any submissions process I know of): /.

I copy and paste directly from my word processor into the submission page. My initial notes about the story, such as "this is a work of fiction, all characters etc etc" are rendered into italics automatically by Lit.

Then I proofread one more time before I do the final submit. Mistakes still get through but it helps reduce them.

I don't think that Lit. "automatically" renders italics in anything in the story file. I think Laurel's been doing that for you. I mark that part myself as well.

She is wonderful then, because I never asked for it, and it always happens. I've seen instructions on other threads how to do it, but have never needed it.

There's a lot of reason this place is great, and that's just one more.

I went ahead and submitted my story. It's about 8,000 words, so I hope it isn't too long. I knew that the minimum is 750 words, but didn't know if there was a maximum. The site said it would need to be converted and uploaded manually by the admin. No problem. I can wait. Does anyone know what the average wait time for something like that is?

It doesn't sound, then, like you took the advice just to copy and paste it into the submissions box. So, good luck with what you get.

It normally takes two days for stories to post. The first time it may take a day or two longer.

Usually two days, but if you submitted a doc it could be longer and you're new so maybe longer. I'd say four day tops.

Whatever you do don't click the on word "'pending' if you do you send your story to the back of the list again.

Oh, the impatience of the young.
To give you a clue about story length, you can safely reckon that as Lit page is
about 3000 words, maybe a little more. Given that there are loads of stories of a length in excess of 10 pages, you can see that some authors are well-practiced.

A Lit. page has remained steady for me on 3,750 words for nearly 800 stories.

If I recall correctly, I checked the first few stories I posted at some point and they averaged 3400 ish, and that's what I figure on when I write.

I assume that different styles will result in different counts, depending on how long the paragraphs are and how much is conversation.

Congratulations! I've found it takes about two or three days? Any longer and you'll want to check whether it was rejected for some reason.
