Can I delete my Lit. membership?

Hi,

I hope I'm not duplicating an existing thread. I did a search and found nothing related.

I find myself in a position in which I may need to delete my Lit. membership and stories. I've emailed Lit. for instructions, with no response so far. I've explored the site and can find no mechanism for either cancelling my membership or deleting my submissions.

I've seen accounts and stories (favorites) disappear in the past, so I know that it used to be possible. Does anyone know: Can we get out of here and, if so, how is that accomplished?

Thanks!

Thank you, Darkniciad!

From what I can tell, you are not silly in the least;-). I very much appreciate your help.

Best wishes,

S.S.

Not sure if I've seen the answer to this part of deleting an account so I'll ask.

if an account is deleted what happens to the "posting" history. Are the posts still there, but it says deleted member or does everything vanish?

It depends.

The account becomes an unlinked guest account, and can't be searched, etc. All the stories vanish, and the account no longer appears in a story-side search.

I think you may have to make a special request for the contents of your forum posts to be deleted as well. May also have to request that your username be changed on all the posts to "guest" or something similar.

That's my guess, as some accounts have retained usernames ( though as guest accounts ) and full post content, while others have been completely wiped out with a "guest" username and something such as an emoticon or single word replacing all the post content.

Laurel could naturally clear this up completely during the PM conversation for anyone who needs an account deleted.

I can well understand why Lovecraft68 would want to delete his whole posting history the next time he leaves Lit. in a snit. :D

I have seen some posts that say "guest" including as the op of a thread.

I was curious as I recently saw someone in the personals talking about how he adores his wife of x amount of years then someone on the thread calls him out for posting "ads" for friends with benefits and claiming to be single.

Someone suggested he delete his account before he gets screwed.

Use that link and PM Laurel directly. Emails never seem to get through, but PMs will.

Be sure to let her know why you want to delete your account. A good reason will most likely expediate the process.

Hi,

I sent a PM via the provided link. I received a prompt and courteous response making it very clear that I could delete my account at any time, at my discretion, no reason necessary.

The mechanism for deleting one's account is a little odd--but simple and easy.

I was reminded that the site owners will not delete my posts in this forum and was advised to make sure to do so--should I want to--prior to closing my account, because it will be impossible once the account is closed.

It takes about 4-7 days from request to closure.

The writer ended by wishing me well. Overall, the message was classy and very professional.

Thanks, all, and best wishes.

So, what was the mechanism given for deleting your account? Maybe the next time Lovecraft gets in a snit and declares that he's leaving, his leaving can be faster and smoother. :D

Or for when you have to back track over your postings to try to delete things you say and try to deny later.

Or when some pissed off teenage girl wants to find you and kick your ass, like we all know they could.

Yep, Lovecraft is really smarting from that drubbing he took on the forum yesterday. :D

Let's hope I get the same results because I wish to delete my account. Lit is not any fun when you believe the owners have some grudge against you. And, although I can't imagine why, I appears they have some grudge against me. Over the last 4 weeks, they have rejected every (I believe 7) attempt to post a story or edit a story. First they reject an MS Word file because they said they couldn't open it. However, it is a perfectly good file. I emailed it to someone, and he opened it without any problem. So I copied and pasted. After another ten day they said, since it is an adaptation I needed the original author's permission. I have already emailed Lit and said I had the author's permission and wanted to know it that was okay. Of course, they never replied. So I sent a copy of our email messages in the notes stating and showing that the original author gave me permission. That was three weeks ago and it is still pending.

Next, I wanted to edit Caribbean Cruise with some spelling corrections and a short update. After pending for two weeks, they rejected it. Their reason, I have to state that the story is my work. Of course, it is my work, I wrote it years ago but I never hired an attorney to have it copyrighted so there is no way to prove it. So I did state that it is my work and now it is just pending.

I had submitted another story where a girl castrated her rapist. However, she did it in very professional way with the surgical tool, instructions, and medications from a vet and carefully sewed him back up. There reason given for rejection. They don't accept a story with violence if the victim doesn't receive sexual pleasure. Can you believe that? I read other stories such as "he took his knife, slice slice and snip snip" and that castration is okay. Another, story"he took a baseball bat and struck him in the balls a couple of dozen times, he was a bloody mess and vomiting." And, today a story"he shot off the guy's penis with his rifle and put him in the hospital" and later his wife "pulled out a gun and shot his lover through her eye," killing her of course and those are okay.

As I state, why they have a grudge, I have no idea but it is obvious from the repeated rejections and strange reasons to reject that they invent that never applied in the past and certainly don't apply to others.

For starters, emails apparently aren't opened by the site editor, although references to emailing remain on the site. You have to send a PM (to Laurel) for them to open it. No, that's not your fault. Yes, that's a discrepancy on the site that they just won't bother to fix.

As soon as I sent the foregoing message I sent a PM to Laura at:

and the same day received the following:

Oh Dear. Another case of the 'wrong foot', I fear.
1] Emails to Laurel do not work. You need to send her a PM.
2] You CAN submit a MS Word file, but most users seem to get by with a Copy&Paste job into the submission box. It tends to work better, somehow.
3] If you have managed to get permission from another Author to 'adapt' some of their work, you'll need a real good PM from them to Management to confirm that you can. This is, of course, protection from fraud and is very necessary, IMO.
4] As this is a site for erotic stories, I fear that details of the surgical procedures for castrating a man - even if he IS the rapist - may not be quite the thing best labelled "erotic" [fetish, perhaps, but not particularly erotic]. If you have evidence of similar descriptions in someone's story, report it; there's a limit to the violence on here.

Good Luck.
:)

Horse/barn door. I think the failure of the Web site to clean up references to emails (which are ignored) is quite enough justification for being irritated and not being told how someone should contact Laurel instead, as if it's their fault the Web site hasn't been corrected.

Lit has polices against underage sex. But I have reported several stories with egregious and subtle underage sexual activity.

The same with violent content. Those stories do slip through when only one or two people are approving several hundred stories a week.

It's not you. it's the way the site works. As Pilot says there are some glitches and incorrect info on this site, and it is not the easiest to navigate. It took me three days to figure out how to submit a story.

I really wish the site would get an overhaul and look a bit more modern and be more user friendly.

One thing I would like to see added is the ability to edit a story without having to resubmit the entire thing. Sometimes I see one typo and debate if I should resubmit or not to fix that.

I also at one tiime suggested that they start to use VOlunteers to vette stories so the approval process would be faster, and fewer verboten stories would slip through. Kind of like the volunteer editor program.

Just my thoughts.

Laurel is the one and only one looking at the stories. The reason for the way editing is done now is so she can check and see if the story still follows the rules.

The site has had some upgraders but from what I've heard over the years, the early code for the site is patched together from several different programs and a dozen different programers who are no longer around or in some cases even still alive.

Right now the deal seems to be hurry up and wait.

This explains a lot. I'm new-old to this place; I had an account back in college (can't even remember my old handle, and I'm not sure I want to labor too hard to uncover things that are best left in obsolescence), and when I came back to visit on a whim, everything looked exactly the same as it did in 2003(ish). EXACTLY.

It was like hopping back in a time machine. I was suddenly sweltering in my ridiculous college apartment, using Windows 98 to read naughty stories and to post... stuff.

Bingo. Which is sensible, I think.

I find it very hard to swallow that site admin can't get into pages and correct the content--the references to emailing.

Right now the deal seems to be hurry up and wait.

I thought the operable word (for years) was "soon."

Do you have any idea how much spam this site must receive? E-mails do get through but holy shit... Some people are just lucky I guess.

With the mess of spaghetti that it sounds like this site is built on, and it a ground up deal, pulling one strand is possible but what else is it connected to. Who only knows and the people who might be able to say aren't around. I've reworked systems like this. Most of the time you have to scrap everything and start from scratch. My way of seeing it, that ain't an option until the new stuff is ready and tested. I think some of the upgrades we have seen are part of the new site. It will be a new site for all intents and purposes.

"Soon", yeah that is an open-ended term. In programming it means, we're working our asses off and you'll get it when we have it right. We're not talking about Google or Microshaft, thank Dog, we're talking about a privately owned site with limited resources.

Isn't that irrelevant to various pages here continuing to instruct the use of email when they don't open email?

Are you saying they can't go on these pages and change the instruction from "use email" to "use a PM to Laurel"? They change the content of pages here all the time. Changing content isn't the same as changing function or how one page functions with another.

Hell if i know. The e-mail is a link if I remember right and there is no way to link to the Pm directly. The story side and the forum side are two completely different programs.

Changing all the links to PM wouldn't make sense, because not everyone who might desire to contact the site is going to be a member. Many who are members have probably never visited the forum. If I'm remembering correctly, the default setting for PMs is "off", which means someone would have to actively change this setting in order to use PMs.

That adds up to a rather large percentage of potential contacts that couldn't be made via PM without at least going through a process first.

The best option is probably to change the link to the PM option on the main member's control panel page, which is behind an authentication wall, while leaving the email link elsewhere. That weeds out the people who cant use it at all.

The error messages could then be tailored to give greater direction when someone who hasn't turned on their PMs tries to use the link. How good the admin interface is determines the difficulty of doing that.
