I posted stories here to learn something. I got a lot of interesting feedback and some interesting reviews of sorts. But mostly I feel like my stories got raped by some writers ego or some kid with nothing to do but screw with our voting system. Either way I have had enough. So does anybody have an idea where I can take them. Doesn't have to be an erotic site just one with people who read and do feedback.

Dunno, but...

I'm curious, MW. What happened? Are you talking about voting? Or negative feedback? Voting is not a very good gauge of the worth of a story, and feedback is only of use if it's educated. But I'm sure you know those things, so what happened?

Hanlon's Razor

Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

I came here to post stories so that I would know how people felt about them. At first I had reasonable number then the began in the fifty k range for the first week. I thought wow this is great people really like the crap i write. So I ventured forward with a real piece. The voting was okay not great. I was encouraged enough to put a novel I had written a while back on the list.

The novel did 5.0 for the first ten votes. The it hit the big board. Then minutes late a novel which take six hours to read got a vote of 1.

Laural took a look and decide it was unfair she removed the 1 and the novel went back on the board. an hour or so later it got a 2 vote. I dismissed it as another person looking to get off who just got pissed that they had wasted an hour finding out my novel wasnt about that. The a vew hours later it got another 1.

Now call it ego if you want. (which like shit I am full of) but I am not going to learn any thing when the votes are cast not on the merit of the work but on it's threat to others or it's lack of fuck scenes. Sorry guys I will take my novel and i have a bag full as the peanut salesman said and go somewhere they will get an honest vote. I actually dont think the novel is a five. It is probably a four and if it had slipped to that with a dozen votes of four i wold have said okay. even some threes but how do you learn from rigged votes and lists.

I go by reads in the porn cause it is the horse i am riding. From 40k up i think is good for my ego. But when I write for quality not cum I expect a fair indication of what I have done. So this is why I am leaving this site.

I did not really wish to go without a

i did not realize how verbose i can be. I do not wish to leave without a huge thank you to all of you. I learned more the last month than i did the whole year before about this place and the people who write on it.

Most of all I wish to thank Lauren. She did her best but you cant battle assholes with chopstiks. Thank Lauren you are my Don Quiote. I am not leaving personally so much as moving my stories. I am sure I will pop in to annoy you all. now back to west virginia to get the deacon back to the world.

Mysterywriter,
The sites I have given you are fine sites, however, in my opinion, Literotica is the best as by far for feedback and # of readers is concerned. Especially, for your kind of stories.

So, what I want you to do is take a deep breath. Okay, maybe two.

Then ask yourself, what is your goal as a writer. Do you want a lot of reads and a high rating? If that is your goal, then write incest stories with 90% sex and 10% story.

From reading your stories, it appears you want to write a good story. Well, good stories affect people strongly and you are going to get "1" votes. I also don't know about the other authors, but I have had some asshole giving me a one, just like the one you got. It is always the first vote too. It has gotten rather comical at this point. As a matter of fact, I would probably wonder if the person was sick or something if I didn't get oned to start with. LOL!

Probably one of the hardest things to come to terms with, is that there are going to be people who don't like your stories. Hell, one of the authors here said my stuff was juvenile. Fuck that and fuck anything else that tries to come between me and my writing. There are people out there that like to read about dominance, submission, humiliation, and kinky sex. Those are the people I write for and those are the stories I read.

So, my advice is to look on the positive side or just don't even lok at the votes. It is difficult to take yourself out of the equation when you put so much of yourself in when you write . . . but it is something we all have to adjust to.

Cheers

Couture

I don't blame you for being upset at the lack of a true barometer of your work from the votes, but if you go by popularity, Steven King is the greatest writer alive with JK Rowling close behind. I'm not throwing stones at them, but clearly there are many, many, many better writers than them who do not get read at all. Most of the stuff I like to read (and write) are not things that the general public are interested in (by "general public", I mean those who drive the BS list). I think you should ask people on the boards what they think. They are generally more interested in the quality of the writing than what the stroke/paragraph ratio is.

Don't go - remember the internet is a fickle place - if my memory serves me correctly, Stephen King BOMBED when he published a novel as a partwork online?

Anyone else remember that - if I recall correctly he wanted a dollar a reader a chapter.

The problem as I see it is that some folks are going to be tempted to deliberately vote low, on a story in the same category as they have a story. The possible solutions to that situation would be:
(a) to not allow any author a vote.
or (b) authors could not vote in the categories they had stories.

I would imagine software wise option a would be simpler. Neither seems to be fair to the majority of us who I am sure vote fairly.

MW, your only problem is your audience. Your novellas aren't written for Literotica's audience. They come here to read blatant pornography. The one I did read had sex mention obliquely. You are going to get a bad vote from a guy looking to jerk the pud and finds out that after 9 pages he's got to go find something else. In retaliation, he gives you a bad vote. You didn't fulfill the reader's expectations. You don't read the Story of O in church and you don't read anything not-pornographic at Literotica. You'll notice that the non-erotic category is not only underread but has lower votes.

There are sites where you can post straight fiction. I don't remember right now. I don't think you're going to have any better luck posting your stuff on a site that caters to the sexual unless you're writing in the sexual.

Miss muffin that is what I am doing hon. Taking my toys and putting them in play somewhere else..

By the way, those sites I posted are for erotic stories. You can post non-erotic stuff there if you like, although I imagine the reception will be rather cool. I must say that it baffles me why someone would post non-erotic stories on a dirty stories site . . . kind of like finding horror in the poetry section of the book store.

and if you were the one that put it there, then why are you wodering why it isn't selling?

Thank you for the sites I have checked them out.... I also knew a couple of traditional sites I am trying. thank you all for your input.

As for the other well enough has been said already....

Mystery Writer--

You are right that a competitor or vandal can give you low votes. Probably that holds anywhere there is anonymous voting with open registration.

Picture an election for mayor in Cinncinnati: to vote you need only 'register' with an email address and give some name. Picture that it could be done online. If I, in Ontario, feel like voting, I do so, and I use the number of vowels in the guys name to determine my vote. If a busload of tourists comes in from Nebraska, they need only ask, and give an email, to vote!

Surely you have read of parties that hold primaries where registration is not time limited. Very interesting results. Jones brings in 500 to register on the day before the vote.

In short, the 'votes' are VERY approximate index of a story's being liked or of merit. A great many fine stories are around 4-4.25. Improper 'inflating' and improper 'deflating' are possible for any number of reasons, not just by authors, but their fans, friend and enemies.

It is simply not possible to control the things you speak of without such obvious measures as 1) limiting votes to members (who identify themselves, at least to literotica, if not the author) 2) disallowing voting immediately after registration,
3) disallowing voting sessions where only a second elapses before a story is clicked on and a vote is cast, 4) disallowing votes where not all pages are even clicked on, 5) limiting the number of 1's or 5's that can be cast in a single log-on sesssion.

What you seek is possible only in a network of committed writers who somehow overcome jealousy. A small cosy place.

I must not be expressing myself very well. It is not about the scores really it isnt.. It is about learning. How do you know when a story has merit or now when you cant trust the system you are counting on to tell you whether it does or not.

I dont want to change the system at all. I just dont want to judge my efforts that way. Truly the incedents of what I experienced are not that rare. Take a look at how many pieces hit the big board at number one with the high score. Then the next day try to find them. If they had a small number of votes so that they could not weather the 1 they got cast they are somewhere on the bottom of the list or worse. I am not talking novels that are non erotic I am talking good erotic or porn stories too.

If your story hits the board with ten votes of five each. A one vote will send you far down the list. Two of those and you are off the list and on to obscurity. That is what happens to most of the low vote total number one stories. somebody tosses the 1 on them and they never recover.

If a piece gets ten 5 votes and many have. I would expect it would get maybe a 4 or two to gradually lower it. Maybe even a 3. Unless it was doped (As we say in the horse business) it might come down gradually. It will find it's own level which is fair.

now the other bit. Your story comes out one day. The next day you go on the board with 200 votes and a 4.89. If your story sucks wind and you get hones 3's
that story is not going to come down for a long time. is it happening I dont know. I do know I have seen both stories with 200 votes in one day hit the board and stories with ten votes hit it the ten vote is gone to obsurity the same day. Now my only point is (and trust me it is my point) I want to know what the natural level for my stories are. What works what doesnt. How do you find it's natural level if that happens..

I have a few over 4.5 they stayed there probably because they never made it to the big board. So I can say that is where they belong. Most of mine fall between 4 and 4.5 and that is fine it is where they belong no doubt. I found two novel excepts did only fair a 4 each. A non porn short story took a hit under four. Again fair and I learned from it. Write for the audience. I watch hit run to over 53k on one 52k on another and one headed to that place. those were in incest. But guys i didnt have 400,000 hits probably not the whole portfolio did that. I dont think I am the best writer here. I dont even know if I am a good writer that is what I am here to find out. And i cant do it if everytime I put something good up It gets raped. Please I don't want to harm this site it works for you fine. It just dont work for me. Maybe every site will prove to be the same. I hope not. If it does I will come back and tell you all that I am just a lousy writer. Now lets move on guys enough of my troubles.

Lauren again thank you honey and I have no hard feelings nobody can control a free society or a free site. and i dont mean money free. Freedom will be abused but the controls are way to dangerous to even consider....

MW,

How do you learn? Listen to feedback. In that sense votes are not informative at all. I have an incest story with tens of thousands of views and a couple hundred votes, very little feedback. Whether it's 5's or 4's doesn't matter. Of voters (themselves 1% of readers), it's the 1% of them that write who are likely to be useful.

If you listen to what people say to you in signed emails, you may gain something. Everything else can almost be ignored.

Fellow authors can give feedback, and there is a story discussion forum for feedback. That's where you should be looking, imho.

A different venue might secure a slightly different audience, but all of the issues you've raised will, I predict, remain exactly the same, with open 'free for all' anonymous evaluation.

MysteryWriter,

Don't base your writing by the one bomber. Instead base it on the number of reads you get, and the kinds of feedback that you receive. Try looking at the voting system this way: If your story continues to climb even after being "1" bombed than you are being told by those votes that your story is well liked. If the bomber has to repeatedly knock you down after that same story claws its way back up again and again, then you definitely know that your story is good.

The Story Teller

I think as a writer our main objective is to trigger a reaction in the reader many writers through out history have not been popular because of their views, stories etc, however if you receive a vote be it good or bad you have been successful at achieving your goal. Writing and posting at place like Lit is tough because you expect if your writing erotica everyones going to like it we all know thats not true.

Writing stories that do not appeal to the majority of the reading audience at Lit is always going to fall below expectations.
The number one rule in Marketing and sales is know your audience and pitch to them, if your stories are not hitting the target here then you know the answer.

As far as learning I think Mystery Writer you have learnt a lot more about writing just from the replies to your post in this forum you might not know it yet.

I dont know you but I guess I beleive in solidarity the more of us the stonger we are, for just that I would ask you to reconsider your thoughts on leaving.

Fuck em all I say (average joe jerk off)write what you want to write, its whats inside you that counts and you knowing that you have written a good story.

Couture

The one and only! I usually get blasted the minute my stories are posted. But I get a very decent reader viewing and have as yet received only great feedback on them so I know they are well liked stories.
