I want a digital SLR camera.

I like doing portraiture and macro shots of plants.

I want the possiblity of having it fully or semi automatic or manual

I would like an automatic focus that I can turn off sometimes (if that exists)

I would like some suggestions...

Great Link Here

For me, Nikon can't be beat in the manual world. When it comes to digital + user friendly, I really dig the Canon EOS, though I've not yet had an opportunity to play with the big guns.

whatever you get, pay the extra for image stabilization! I have a Fuji S5100 that I have been extremely happy with, but I really wish I would have bought the one with the anti shake feature. At the time, I wasn't wanting to spend the money on the next model up...now I wish I would have.

But even with that, I love my camera...

That's what I'm considering, so I can interchange the lenses with my 35mm EOS. I love my Canon. :)

That's not actually a bad price, especially when converted to sterling. Hmm, just over 400 quid. Maybe when I start earning I can treat myself...

Or could I start one of those websites where I get people to pay me 10c each and when it gets to 1000 dollars I do something wacky?
Would that work?

Of course, V. Or you could set up a phony "Save the Children" site and make a real killing.

That's actually a really impressive price, especially considering I don't have either of those lenses.. Not quite enough saved up for something like that though, unfortunately.

The last price I saw for that was around $1000. That's amazing.

Same, and with only one lens, and I'm sure it wasn't the 18-55 mm

The cheapest D-SLR I had found in my searches was the Olympus E-Volt, and was considering purchasing it for a whiles, as it came with two lenses at the time. It was 1000 canadian. Canon Rebels were 200 or more up on that, with only 1 lens, or none at all.

I found that at Best Buy on-line. I thought it was a pretty good deal too.

Not bad.. same camera, without the extra lens for 729 canadian..

<sigh>
I do actually have the money - and then some - but I have some fairly major expenditures coming up (wedding, possible house buying, babies in a coupla years) and since I'm not earning (and when I do it'll probably be peanuts) I need to save save save...
Is a 25th birthday a significant one? Cos it's only a year and a week away so maybe I can get a nice digital SLR then...

My 25th birthday wasn't very significant at all.. so not sure for the general populus.

So you're looking more for a good quality P&S or SLR-Like right?

25th IS significant. You'll know that when you're 26.

You can find many lenses that would suit you perfectly for both those applications.

Every SLR I've seen have these options.

For the Canon Rebel XT you can find the body only for around 500 to 550 American now (I was just checking, it's 627 canadian on a couple sites I saw), not sure what that is in Pounds. Then you would need at least one lens, and that's really about personal preference. Although, if you need your first lens to be multi-purpose, get a zoom lens. It's a bit worse for quality than a prime/fixed lens but doesn't take any time at all to zoom in, and costs less than buying 2 prime lenses (generally, depends on the lens of course)

The Kit lens that comes with the Canon Rebel XT is an 18 to 55 mm, but isn't Macro. You'd be able to get some pretty close shots probably (I didn't look at the focusing range on it), but they wouldn't be true macro shots. True macro lenses are much more costly, unfortunately. However, you can mimic macro with extenders and reversing rings, etc.

Hope that helps a bit

Much appreciated. I thinks it's 2 dollars to the pound at the moment, but England has a tendency to charge the same number but with a pound sign instead of a dollar sign in front of it, effectively doubling the price.
If I could get one of my rellies to bring one back with them on a visit I might commit :D
I wonder if my dad has any business trips coming up?
