Yes, yes, yes......

I get a DLL stack error and have to shut down for a while, it SUCKS BIG TIME!!!

OK, what do you do about it.

I have very little experience with Pentium class AMD chips. What experience I do have with earlier AMD chips and windows 98 leads me to believe that the freeze problems are more wwinows 98 than the AMD chip -- especially if you're not running Windows 98 Second Edition which correct a lot of bug in the original Win 98.

DLL stack errors are probably software incompatibilities. You need to find the program that is corrupting the DLL stacks.

My sister experienced a similar problem to yours. She runs an AMD 1.4 with Win98 on an ABIT motherboard. After a few minutes everything would just freeze. Seemingly at random.

Upgrading the 4in1 VIA drivers seems to have solved the problem.

YMMV

actually if you ARE running 98SE that could be the biggest problem. 98SE aren't fully compatible AMD processors not to mention its major bugged and likes to freeze on its own anywho. My suggestion is to upgrade to ME because its the upgrade for the 9x series and packed w/ the most drivers and has least ammount of bugs. Just whatever you do ... do NOT upgrade to XP unless you get Professional Edition. I've heard 2000 also has issues w/ the AMD processors but not sure. ME is probally your best choice over all since its the upgrade to the 9x series and keeps the same system format and should run the same files only better. Plus it looks nicer and takes less space.

If you do decide to upgrade to Win ME, make sure you download the patch for the memeory management bug that causes Win ME to gradually lock out memory resources until it either slow to the speed of an 80286 / Win 3.0 machine or freeze up.

Good rule of thumb with DLL errors.... If you have a restore disk or all your driver and program disks you should reformat the computer. It's fairly simple and will make it run smoother

if you are running

a k7 1.4ghz... you need to go right to XP.... it is by far the best windows os for AMD chips...

xp might be the best os for amd chips but its the worst os in general

as of recently many of my xp using friend have had major problems
and i do mean major
xp is shit
2000 is the best of them all

and ME in reality is just a beeffed up version of 98
nothing really that new in it

personally im working my way twoard linux but i still need a windows box for the less computer inclined memeber of my family so im stuck for now

First I disagree with the premise that W2K is the best and WXP is the worst. WXP is just a newer version of W2K; it is NT 6.0, and W2K is NT5.0 - both are the same core operating system, and both are NT. There were some major changes, but except for the stupid copy protection crap (for which I now understand there are easy hacks to get around it), XP is an improvement over W2K.

Second, I agree with Harold; it is very rare that the problem is the hardware, especially the CPU and motherboard, and especially if it is a major brand CPU (which AMD is) and a major brand motherboard (which most are, but that wasn't spec'd here.

that may sound strange coming from a software engineer; but believe me, there is a hell of a lot more testing and verification that goes into hardware than software - once the hardware is out it is not easily changed, software (and firmware) is easily patched.
