No more black cars in the cereal state after 2011.

" California May Reduce Carbon Emissions By Banning Black Cars

Legislation may by 2016 restrict the paint color options for California residents looking for a new car. Black and all dark hues are currently on the banned list. The California Air Resources Board says that the climate control systems of dark-colored cars need to work harder than their lighter siblings — especially after sitting in the sun for a few hours."

In Arizona it's a common sense thing - no legislation is needed.

That's what I was thinking...my car is a deep royal blue and I bought it while I was still living out there. Trying to open the door in the summer was awful enough to make me think I should've gotten a much lighter-colored paint.

Gold is an excellent compromise...coincidentally, my truck's that color. It absorbs less heat, yet doesn't show dirt. I also have wind guards on my windows...you open the windows an inch or so when you park and the heat dissipates...the same when you drive away...let the hot air blow out, then turn on the A/C. Works for black cars too. :D

I use the "moon roof" to the same effect . . . when I can't find a parking space in the shade, that is.

You have shade? That's a scarce commodity here, unless you're east of a tall building and it's after 3:00pm. :D

My town has the biggest damned trees planted all up and down the streets. If you sit on the roof and look out, you'd think you were in the woods!

The sun has not been visible in the Northwest since earlier October and all my cars have been shiny black, even my Harley & Dune Buggy...I built a sailboat in Miami and painted it shiny black(but the deck & cabin top were gray).

My hero's have always been Cowboys....ooops...I meant, my cars have always been black...I keep getting confused, is it the weekend yet?

Even Cowgirls get the Blues...and even the Japanese guy in Karate Kid got laid, ain't life wunnerful?

the amicable one...

Then it makes sense to evict all dark skinned people. Put them on a bus to Massachusetts. Maybe outlaw night, too. Its pretty black. And caves!

On the other-hand dark colors are handy in the winter season.

Please tell me they did the proper research. Most things I've read say dark colors get there faster, but as far as interiors go, they end up at pretty much the same peak temperature.

JOMAR

The car's glass traps more radiation than the paint job. If they thought about it they'd conclude that glass traps infrared radiation, and how goddamned dark is clear?

it isn't the color of the car that absorbs the heat, it's all the windows...I once had a black AMC Pacer. you can't make me believe that it turned into a bake oven on account of the color...it was the windows! My dad called it the Flying Mason Jar.

Since when do politicians do anything based on research other than how to con more votes?

Yeah, sure, he built the internet, right? And predicted a coming ice age? Such research we can do without....(heh)

IIRC, Mythbusters tested the temperature increase of a black car over a white car and got a 20F difference.

Personally, I think it's more the color of the interior than the color of the car that makes that much difference -- My daughter's navy-blue VW Wagon doesn't get has hot as my dark-grey blazer does but she's got a light-grey interior and I have a black interior.

I saw that episode. And yes, using two identical vehicles aside from color, the black one was well hotter.

I use T-tops instead of AC though, so my car being black has no effect on the environment* :D

And I don't live in California, so it doesn't matter anyway :D

*I really hate spelling "environment". Why is there a second N in there?

But flames look silly on a white car.....

Oh yeah, I remember now, they outlawed flames along with racing strips back in the 90's.

Ask Al Gore. He was big on research in his day.

Good points.

Love the show but didn't see that episode. I had a light gray leather interior that got pretty hot. When it was time to get a new car I read up on what I could find about interiors because the exterior temperature didn't matter to me. What I could find pretty much said it doesn't really matter if it's in the sun for a few hours, peak temps about the same. But there is the leather-cloth issue, of course.

How fucking stupid.

Uh! Yoo Hoo! Usual Suspects?

How much heat do yuh suppose the engine and exhaust adds to the temp of the car?

Oh! The engine is about 212 degrees, and that exhaust pipe that goes beneath the car is prolly hot enough to start a fire.

Sorry but the modern engine runs at 240 to 260 degrees for better fuel efficiency.

The only part of the exhaust system that could start a fire is the catalytic converter. That's why there is a heat shield installed on the underside of it.
