Someone asked me for more details...?
I could have used any type of cage. I looked at pet stores, I could have called an animal clinic, I could have built one myself, etc.
I just happen to know a shipping/receiving clerk at a warehouse and we are casual friends who see each other a couple of times a month. I asked him to be on the lookout for a small crate where I could pack up a lot of dishes for someone.
When he found one, I just dropped by his place of work near closing time and picked it up. It weighed 50-75 lbs (?) and it was only a mild exertion to carry it to my second floor apartment. It had three boards along the bottom where you could use a forklift to move it. There was an existing crack in one corner of the bottom, but I didn't bother repairing it and just told myself it would be the ventillation.
The crate had a plywood top that you remove with a crowbar and re-close with nails. I am not going to describe the actual scene, but yes -- I hammered the nails with her inside to seal it off each time.
Could she have escaped from this contraption? Probably given enough time! The lid was secure, but she could have thrown her weight around and tipped the crate over on its side to try and stress the construction. (My friend told me that if you drop a crate from the forklift, it will fall to the floor and bust open.) And it would have torn up her hands, but she also could have attacked the crack in the bottom to make a bigger hole. But if I was intent on keeping her caged, I could have re-enforced the bottom and put obstacles around the outside so it could not be tipped over.
