Cable Modem Users - Geek Alert

I chose to pay the $5 a month rental fee rather then buy the cable modem itself. I recommend this because if they upgrade the system the modem you buy might not be compatible with the upgrades and when you "rent" it they will give you a new modem when they change their standards. Additionally, if you have any problems they will fix or replace it.

Dill, I was with you at $299. But at $99, the chances of either of those happening to me, especially at a $15/month rental fee, before its paid for itself has decreased drastically.

And in truth, in the two years I've had it, I've had the same modem, no problems. That equates to $360. For me, this was a no brainer.

Makes sense... though they did upgrade where I am and replaced my modem after I had the service about a year. Guess it all depends on how much you can buy the modem for and how much the rental fee is.
