By far the stupidest, and probably easiest answered question of the day.

*deep breath*

What the fuck is ICQ? What does it stand for? Where can I get some should I desire it?

I realize this much: it's some kinda chat thing.

ICQ is one of them there Instant Messaging programs, like the one AOL has and MSN Messenger, and Yahoo IM and all those. You can do instant messenging as well as chat there.

It's been around longer than the other three and is, in my opinion, the best of them all. It's far less buggy and the network is damned reliable.

The homepage is here .

Yes, ICQ is a chat program. It stands for "I Seek You".

I don't use it myself, but you can download it from web.icq.com and other places

Phoneticly, derived from old "ham" radio lingo - I SEEK YOU...

Yet another Instant messenger - has too many "bugs" for my old Pentium - I use only MSN and AIM... They seem to work just fine... ;)

Download from http://www.icq.com if you want it.

Hope this helps. :)

Thanks everyone! I'll check it out, probably sign up, then forget about it and leave it off.

Another question while I'm here.

How do you do that fancy thing where you insert a link into any word you want, like Jim did?

I think that's cool and neato.

Easy, <URL=http://web.icq.com>bob</URL>

Just change the <>'s to []'s. The example above would link the word bob to web.icq.com.

when you reply to a post there are two rows of buttons above the text box where you type your post. one says "http://". click on that sucker and it will open a box that asks what you want the hyperlink word to be. enter that, click ok, enter the web address and click okay again. the code will show up in the text box.

just like this!

Waahhoaaa, Alex. Good questions, hen. Not such a stupid thread after all. How do you do the kinky link jim?

And while I'm at it I've a lovely little programme which makes the mouse into a flowing clock of letters - does anyone know how to upload it. It's and htm file.

The only real advantage that I can see with ICQ, is the "split screen" real-time ability to see what the other person is typing. I don't know if MSN or AOL has that capability, but my Yahoo IM program does not.

If you are holding a conversation with someone, it is often nice to be able to see every letter as they type it, so you can often complete the sentence for them or change the direction of the chat before they have typed a looooong sentence. I find the speed of the conversation is MUCH better on ICQ.

It has been a long, long time since I have cybered, but it was always better on ICQ. :D

On the screen where you type your reply should be a bunch of little code buttons. They help you automate functions like making italicized or boldfaced words and such.

One of those is marked "http://". Click on it. The first box (**********, so if you're java is disabled) asks you what text you want to use (the plain English stuff). Click OK. Then the next box will be where you put the Web address of the site you want to link to.

That's it. :D It's not an original of mine. It's pretty much commonplace on another site where I go from time to time, and I got it from there.

Yeah, that is fun! Always wondered how to do that.

The Betty Bowers site is a religious satire. Christians, please don't take offense.

I think it's funny as hell.

ICQ was great in the earlier versions but now it has become bloatware. I never use it anymore and I think it just has too many nearly useless features.

Some trivia for you:

ICQ was started by an Isralie company but was bought by AOL a couple of years ago.

ICQ can also be used as a server type program to launch online games.

Alex, you are going to have to change your av. I can no longer handle seeing that hard nipple...mmmm..makes me wet. I'm getting damn close to licking my screen...thats not a good thing you know! Can we just fuck?

Ok, how was that for my first troll experience? ;)

I have an ICQ number.

Not sure what to do with it, but I feel better just knowing I have it.

I had no idea what I've been missing.

Bring on the trolls, baby. :D

Well, I guess you've figured out what ICQ is by now! Had for a couple of months, and drove me batty. As Azwed said - bloatware. Too much, and the damn thing seems to just "take over" your whole machine, including being the page that first comes up when you turn on your machine. (yes, you can change that, but why should the program even set this up to begin with?)

Bleah!

I already have too many complications in RL to deal with a complicated IM thingie. Plus, you have to remember your ICQ number, and never could keep that thing straight. Best thing I did was got rid of the dang thing.

MSN or Yahoo works fine for what I need it for.

Consider what you want to do with an IM service and then choose the one that's the least complicated for you. That's my .02 worth.

Being a troll ain't so bad..hehee

:p

I think you're supposed to get your ICQ number engraved on your computer so that if it's ever stolen they know who to impersonate. ;)
