Anyone got any packing tips? I never pack lightly anyway, but I'm having a job finding a suitcase big enough to put everything I want to take into. :(

And it's getting really complicated, because I have to pack several different types of outfits, as well as stuff I need for work... At the moment I feel like tearing my hair out...

That kind of 'business' :p

Choose a small suitcase, try to fit everything you can't possibly be without, then move one size up. If you are using an economy airline, they absolute sticklers on weight, pay for a second bag on-line in preference to getting stung at the airport.

No airlines involved - I'm driving, but not in my own car, so I also have to transfer all the essentials from my car into the rental one.

It's getting very complicated.

Small suitcases? What are they? :p

The not-your-own car part makes it a bit more inconvenient, but if I'm on a car trip the packing becomes real simple - I use my car as a suitcase. :D

Here's an idea, given that you have a rental and need to transfer: Go to the equivalent of walmart or whatever and get some of those plastic storage containers with lids, you know, like 10 gallon jobbers, and just throw all your stuff in there. If this is going to be a regular thing that might not be a bad approach.

Enjoy!

Too late :( The shops around here all close at 4pm on a Sunday....

A good one I hadn't thought of before is a candle with a lid, like in a tin or small glass jar. Great for relaxation at the hotel at the end of a long day. :rose:

For packing, a garment bag that you can hang outfits in will also lie flat. I also roll a lot of things, fold them neatly and then roll.

At the very start of my road warrior days I had made a couple of solo trips down to Atlanta. This time I took along a couple of my employees, both ladies. Well, at the hotel, I gallantly offered to carry in their suitcases (this was in the days before rolling luggage). My arms nearly pulled out their socket -- they each had packed a hair dryer, and an iron -- not sure about other more personal items. They weren't putting luggage through X-rays in those days, so you had more privacy in what you could take along.

Don't try to put everything into one large suitcase. You'll have to carry/pull that sucker around, and it will be heavy and unweildy. Voice of experience. ;)

I have a garment bag that folds in half and also has wheels and a handle. I can actually get a lot of stuff in it. It has pockets for shoes and such. I think it saves space, as the clothes are only folded over one time, and then you can hang them right up. I also take a smaller carry on, and am usually good to go with just that and my purse.

Thank you, Magicapractica

I rolled - and it took up way less space

More room for DVDs and video games :nana:

I don't own a hairdryer and I don't do ironing... but my case still has the potential to pull arms out of their sockets.

Don't suppose you're free to carry my bag from the car into the hotel tomorrow lunchtime? ;)

Used to make quick one or two day trips to cities all over Europe back when I had that kinda job. In the beginning, packing was hell. But I learned soon enough to weed out the following things from my packing.

a) stuff I packed but didn't use
b) stuff I packed and used only becuase I packed it, but could do just as well whithout
c) stuff I bought at home just for the trip, packed and used, when I could just as easily buy it where I went

I went from a suitcase the size of...me, to a small briefcase with room for two changes of shirt and underwear, a small laptop computer, and whatever paperback I was reading at the moment. Whatever else I took with me, I wore or stuffed in pockets.

The rolling idea is a good one, I don't know how it works but rolled clothes take up less space.

Someone once told me about a guy that never took anything at all on holiday except passport etc.
He would buy everything he needed at his destination and then sold it all to the employees of the hotel before he left and just included the cost in his budget.

If you're travelling to Yorkshire you're going to make a hell of a loss

I might have trouble explaining that one to my wife. Sorry!
