Bush wants marriage reserved for heterosexuals

Urges America to remain a "welcoming country"

Wednesday, July 30, 2003 Posted: 11:52 AM EDT (1552 GMT)

President Bush speaks to reporters in the Rose Garden of the White House Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush said Wednesday he has government lawyers working on a law that would define marriage as a union between a woman and a man, casting aside calls to legalize gay marriages.

"I believe marriage is between a man and a woman and I believe we ought to codify that one way or the other and we have lawyers looking at the best way to do that," the president said a wide-ranging news conference at the White House Rose Garden.

Bush also urged, however, that America remain a "welcoming country" -- not polarized on the issue of homosexuality.

"I am mindful that we're all sinners and I caution those who may try to take a speck out of the neighbor's eye when they got a log in their own," the president said. "I think it is important for our society to respect each individual, to welcome those with good hearts."

"On the other hand, that does not mean that someone like me needs to compromise on the issue of marriage," he added.

Bush has long opposed gay marriage but as recently as earlier this month had said that a constitutional ban on gay marriage proposed in the House might not be needed despite a Supreme Court decision that some conservatives think opens the door to legalizing same-sex marriages.

The Supreme Court struck down a Texas law that made homosexual sex a crime, overturning an earlier ruling that said states could punish homosexuals for having sex.

Conservative Justice Antonin Scalia fired off a blistering dissent of the ruling.

The "opinion dismantles the structure of constitutional law that has permitted a distinction to be made between heterosexual and homosexual unions, insofar as formal recognition in marriage is concerned," Scalia wrote. The ruling specifically said that the court was not addressing that issue, but Scalia warned, "Do not believe it."

Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, R-Colorado, is the main sponsor of the proposal offered May 21 to amend the Constitution. It was referred on June 25 to the House Judiciary subcommittee on the Constitution.

To be added to the Constitution, the proposal must be approved by two-thirds of the House and the Senate and ratified by three-fourths of the states.

No More Shrub

From the day he was elected in office until yesterday I supported Bush on the majority of his issues. However, now, I am completely turning my back on him. I'm only recently an openly bisexual male but I've quickly become a huge gay rights supporter. I'm also the type of person who won't back down once he's stood up for something and we try to teach so much tolerance in this country and go liberate other countries to 'give them the same opporitunities we have'. What opporitunities? To become a country where it is illegal to marry the person you love just because of their gender. I'll put up with Bush until Jan of 2005 and someone else better be in office or, I swear to my goddess I'll fucking move to Canada!

*goes to fume at every Right Wing, Ultra-Conservative Christian he sees*

Just one more

I already hated Bush, but this just gives me one more reason to hate him.

Marriage is a State's Rights issue before it should ever succumb to Federal sanction.

Wow. I am pretty angry.... let me think before I write something too out of whack....

It is NO MAN'S decision on WHO I am allowed to marry... whether it be a man or woman. It is NO ONE'S business WHO I love.... WHO I want to marry, or WHO I want to spend the rest of my life with. The government may control my life in terms of taxes and safety.... but they will NEVER control WHO I love or WHO I am allowed to love. Have the government get to know OUR society before placing judgment and laws on us. And I am going to stop there before I end up not making sense.

FUCK GEORGE BUSH AND ALL PEOPLE WHO THINK THEY CAN PLAY GOD ON HOMOSEXUAL ISSUES.

ACLU Cautions President Against Taking A More Extreme Anti-Gay Stance

July 30, 2003

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON – Responding to President Bush’s support for a discriminatory new law restricting marriage to a man and woman, expressed this morning at a rare Rose Garden news conference, the American Civil Liberties Union cautioned the President against supporting a constitutional amendment that would forever ban same-sex marriages.

“With only a few exceptions, most legal attacks on gays and lesbians are like jabs relative to the knockout punch to gay and lesbian rights the President could be gearing up to support,” said Christopher E. Anders, an ACLU Legislative Counsel. “By trumping all local and state protections for gay or lesbian relationships, such an extreme move would deprive millions of loving, devoted families of their most fundamental rights in one fell swoop.”

At his news conference this morning, the President said, “I believe in the sanctity of marriage. I believe marriage is between a man and a woman. And I think we ought to codify that one way or another.” At the same time, right wing activists are rallying behind a constitutional amendment being pushed currently in Congress by Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) who got in trouble earlier this year for equating homosexuality with incest and bestiality.

The White House has to date declined to endorse a constitutional amendment limiting marriage to heterosexual arrangements and the ACLU, although dismayed that the President wants to shut the door to states that want to recognize same-sex families, urged him to continue to reject any constitutional change.

The proposed amendment, the ACLU said, would undermine state domestic partnerships, adoption, foster care and kinship care laws. Significantly, the amendment also would not hurt just gays and lesbians. It would deprive all unmarried couples of all legal protections for their relationships by overriding any federal or state constitutional protections and federal, state and local laws. In many states, unmarried persons -- including unmarried relatives, heterosexual couples, and even unrelated clergy members -- have the same rights as married persons to jointly adopt or provide foster care or kinship care.

The proposed amendment would also take the extremely rare – and inevitably disastrous – step of changing the Constitution to restrict rights, a purpose that the founders never intended. The last time the Constitution was changed to constrain Americans’ liberties – with the 18th Amendment and Prohibition – the move was an unqualified failure that had to be repealed.

The President’s remarks also come on the heels of the Lawrence v. Texas Supreme Court decision striking down state anti-sodomy laws, which was based on a strong affirmation of a basic right to privacy in the United States.

“The President’s stance belies any prior lip-service to limited government or the traditional Republican values of individual rights and personal dignity,” Anders said. “This is the government in our bedrooms and interfering with our families all over again.”

Like I said in another thread on the subject, that man is a bumbling idiot, and I hope he doesn't make it back into office.

Not only did I not vote for this asshole but i am glad that i did not. There should not be ANY reason for the government to decide with whom and how a person should spend their personal time. It is an affront to all i believe and i can NOT wait til they kick his ass the whole way back to where he came from!!!!

:p

WHY?

I'm not trying to be funny or condesending to Wondering Wiccan, but I have friends who say the same thing and I ask them as well. They don't appear to be the right wing, xenophobic, racist, ultra conservative, homophobic type, yet they knew what Bush and the Republican party was all along,WHY WHY WHY did you ever support the BASTARD in the first place? I usually tell my friends who are mostly libertarians,Why do you support the Republican party when you have a libertarian party of your own? To me it is like supporting the Communist party because yo want Democratic reform.I ask these things with all due respect,I just want to know.

I supported Bush to start with (not like it would have made a difference, I only turned 18 this past November), because while I've always been extremely liberal about everything (even though people see my political views as conservative. ) I was tired of nearly 8 years of Clinton's lying and weakening of our international peacekeeping/aid and relief efforts through a weakening of our military (The only thing I will ever support 100% in the US because they average uniformed serviceman/woman is just doing their jobs and how they're told to do it as best they can.), and while the economy was doing well to start with it slowly began to decline as he was leaving office. Bush, at first, seemed like he would be a breath of fresh air from the Clinton administration. However, as time has passed, I have grown to like Bush less and less. I think his plan to rid the world of the Taliban and Saddam were good, but executed in a wrong manner. I am not one for extremists and zealots, in any group. And while Bush still puts on the face that he is accepting of all people, and he may be, that doesn't mean he agrees or likes them. I, personally, am tired of seeing extreme-right wing conservatives run this country (especially my portion of it *cough RoyMooresucks cough*. So, in every election I vote in from now until the day I die (or move away from the US) I'm voting indy... I'll vote for whoever's stance on the issues I aggree with most, be it Republican, Democrat, Green Party, Communist, etc. I think, and always have, it's stupid to vote straight down any party just because you claim that political affiliation.

And besides, I was young and näive when Bush was elected into office (not even 16, I think). But I refuse to ever vote for someone like him to be put into office after seeing his true colors start to shine through. I hope that helps answer your question some.

The Republican party stole the g/d election in the first place.

Besides being bi-sexual, I am an outdoor sports fanatic.
The son of a bitch has gutted enviromental protections, sold off
federally protected wilderness to his oil buddies and raped the
rest of us (and our children) financially with his fucking war.

 These goddamn right wing, homophobic, money hungry
mother fuckers can kiss my skinny white ass.

NO puritanical prick has the right to tell me who I can love or
marry, that's IF I ever chose to do that again.

I beleive corporate Amerika has a big say here. Don't recognize
gay/lesbian marriages and they don't have to provide benefits.
It's ok to be a cock sucker or pussy licker, as long as you do your
job. But don't ask for family rights. It's about the $$$.

Okay...my Lit Letter RANT to King George II

"I am mindful that we're all sinners and I caution those who may try to take a speck out of the neighbor's eye when they got a log in their own," the president said. "I think it is important for our society to respect each individual, to welcome those with good hearts."

"On the other hand, that does not mean that someone like me needs to compromise on the issue of marriage," he added.

Okay, he might as well have said, "Because I'm the president, and I am a Christian, gay marriage should be illegal because I said so"

Motherfucker, being a president elected by the people...your job is not to legislate MY morality, because you love Jesus. Whom I choose to love is my fuckin business, not yours. Your job is to represent America to the rest of the world...and I am damn sure that you aren't representing most of America when you try and paraphrase the Bible because you're too fuckin stupid to quote it, you bumbling dunderhead...

Speaking of being a president elected by the people...ohhhhhhhh, that's right...you WEREN'T!

Plus the way he handled Iraq...the man's an idiot. Think he sniffed a little too much coke back in the day and fried his already pea sized brain...

...and where's Osama? Saddam never managed to attack the US. Bin Laden ATTACKED US!

I swear, I think Bush had ADD. He can't keep his mind on one thing until it's done.

Dumb shit.

Okay LOL that's my rant...LOVE to all my gay friends! I'm bi, but if I wanna marry a woman...I'M GONNA!

Bush wants mariage reserved for heterosexuals

Just a bump to get this up for folks to see. Stand up, unite, tell
the M.F.ers "we're not taking this bullshit!!!"

Guys...a life lesson I've learned...

If a question begins with "why do they..." The answer will always end with MONEY.

Bush and his supporters are hardly an exception.

I keep telling people that is my evil twin in d.c. i'm in a cabin in the hills they have to bring food by air.

I think this just sucks if you want to marrie a same sex partner then you should.

I personnally think he is a great president. His social issues are right on and no I am not saying this to piss people off.

Why can't marriage be for man and woman only. Why do we have to devalue the judeo-christian tradition by allowing homosexuals to marry? Why can't they simply settle for partnership? Marriage will and always be between man and woman.

He is not telling you to not be gay he is just telling you that marriage is between man and woman under God's sanctitiy. What is so wrong with that?

People need to look at the issue for what it is not because they think he stole the election, etc...

I am a Republican and damn proud of it. I am conservative in most every single way. I tote guns, I love Jesus, and I like to keep my money and not give it to people who will squander it away.

"States's Rights" has long been a codeword for "legalized bigotry".

What's wrong with that is that using the presidency to promote a religious viewpoint is anti-American.

Religion is very american. Why can't you see that God was the central point in this whole nation. If God and religion have no place in this government then you would have no rights whatsoever. It was the founding father's belief in God that made them feel the way they do. You know, God given/Unalienable rights?

Paul

re: Marshallnoise

Yeah, and the Enron executives, stock brokers, bankers and
tv evangelists who have raped untold millions are all unapologetic
fucking Republicans too. Give your money away? You've done it
for the cause and by doing so sold your childrens financial future
down the drain. As long as you hypocritical, bigoted people run
things, they're going to be fucked up beyond all repair for the
foreseeable future. Thanks for nothing.

Ohh...I tote guns, fish and hang with some good ole boys too.

Like I said before...it's REALLY got nothing to do with religion.
It's about denying benefits to alternative loving couples. $$$$.
