Yay for good avs!

<insert anti-Bush rant here>

Actually she appears to be a very qualified lawyer who several dems are supporting AND whom the far far right dislikes greatly.

Best sound clip from this morning, "Bush might as well start wearing a cardigan, he's turning into jummy carter" that from a far far right person rather ... disapointed shal we say in the appointment.

Several prominant justices had not previously been judges as well.

I'm on dialup here at work. I haven't had a chance either. They do very carefully put up all the ads and fluff, though. Takes quite a while. And look! Lots of cookies, too!

I would like to see this 'breaking news' they're talking about, ultimately... man. You forget about dialup when you have DSL.

but you've got that snappy new wood burning stove, cant.

we might have speed, but you've got atmosphere.

Politically speaking... it's a brilliant nomination.

I may not have given Rove enough credit... even after the Roberts nomination.

One thing about it, she dosen't have a record by which you could hold up her nomination. Having not sat on the bench, she hasn't rendered any opinions which people could find objectionable.

Of course, it also means you have't the faintest idea of where she stands on anything. One could assume, if Bush nominated her, that she is slightly right of Attilla the hun. But she is also a long time freind, so it could just be cronism.

It's so hard to tell with W.

I'm just stunned that Harry Reid and GW agree on something.

Personally this one is meeting my litmus test, people on both sides hate it, thus it is in the middle ;)

Moderate conservatives have a different opinion of it.

They are siding with Karl Rove hedging his bets... it's plausible deniability.

'What!?! She's pro-choice! Who knew?!? Well... we'll be sure not to do that again... we promise but... we're going to need money for that.'

Actually, up until the last 40 or so years, it was MORE common for a Supreme Court judge to be nominated from outside the judicial system than from within.

Hey, I worked as a paralegal for a couple years after college. Does that mean I can throw my hat in the ring for consideration for Supreme Court??? I took Constitutional Law classes in college, too!

Well, she's White House counsel - an appointed position, right? I'd imagine GWB & Co. know where she stands...

I would tend to think her being in an appinted position might do more to obscure her views than bring them to light. Many times "consevatire" or "Liberal" appointees have taken on a decidely diferent mein when freed from having to worry about keeping S0-and-so happy to keep theri job.

I don't know anything about her, so I am not saying this is the case, only that it may be the case. it will be difficult for anyone, especially the Bush Co. Brain trust, to determine how a person will stand once he or she is on the bench when you have not even a small sample of how they reacted the last time they were able to render decisions.

That possibility begs the question, why nominate her? Why not pick one of any number of qualified candidates with a record they can be sure of?

I'm thinking GWB knows her very, very well.

"Once described by White House chief of staff Andrew Card as "one of the favorite people in the White House," Miers has been there for President Bush at every turn for more than a decade.

She was Bush's personal lawyer in Texas, took on the thankless job of cleaning up the Texas Lottery when he was governor, and followed him to Washington to serve as staff secretary, the person who controls every piece of paper that crosses the president's desk.

In 2004, Bush appointed her White House counsel, calling her "a talented lawyer whose great integrity, legal scholarship and grace have long marked her as one of America's finest lawyers." He articulated his high regard for her more memorably during a 1996 awards ceremony when he called her "a pit bull in size 6 shoes."

~

Card, in a 2003 interview with the publication Texas Lawyer, said Bush's affinity for Miers is clear in the frequent invitations she receives to visit the presidential retreat at Camp David, "a privilege that is not enjoyed by a lot of staff."

~

Miers reveals little of her own emotions or ideological persuasions, but has been an enthusiastic supporter of the Bush administration on a broad of initiatives including tax cuts, Social Security reforms, restrictions on federal spending on embryonic stem cell research, national security, education reforms and fighting terrorism.

In hosting an "Ask the White House" interactive forum on the Internet before the 2004 elections, Miers lavished praise on a litany of Bush administration initiatives, then added, "I could go on and on."

President Bush Says Harriet Miers' Religious Beliefs Figured Into Her Supreme Court Nomination

WASHINGTON Oct 12, 2005 — President Bush said Wednesday that Harriet Miers' religious beliefs figured into her nomination to the Supreme Court as a top-ranking Democrat warned against any "wink and a nod" campaign for confirmation.

"People are interested to know why I picked Harriet Miers," Bush told reporters at the White House. "Part of Harriet Miers' life is her religion."

Bush, speaking at the conclusion of an Oval Office meeting with visiting Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski, said that his advisers were reaching out to conservatives who oppose her nomination "just to explain the facts." He spoke on a day in which conservative James Dobson, founder of Focus on Family, said he had discussed the nominee's religious views with presidential aide Karl Rove.

I thought personal faith and religious beliefs weren't supposed to play a role in interpreting the Constitution. Isn't that what Roberts told the Senate? Can Bush even use her religion as a selling point to the far right who oppose this nomination? That seems unconstitutional to me.

Since when did Bush give a damn about the Constitution? Except where he interpreted it to allow him to do what he wants.
