A state of emergency has been declared in the Australian capital Canberra as out-of-control bush fires close to within five miles of the city's suburbs. Chief Minister Jon Stanhope declared a state of emergency for the entire Australian Capital Territory area, which includes Canberra and its surrounding suburbs. "It acknowledges the seriousness of the emergency that we are facing and it allows all of our emergency authorities, including the police, to take, if they need to, a whole range of emergency steps," Stanhope said. Several homes have been destroyed and one person is feared dead."

Two dead and 400 homes lost

Hundreds of homes were smouldering across Canberra this morning as police started door-to-door checks and emergency crews raced to create firebreaks ahead of a wind change later today.

Almost 400 homes were destroyed and two people killed in Canberra when bushfires swept through the national capital late yesterday and overnight.

The ACT Emergency Services Bureau said firecrews and emergency workers were busy mopping up this morning and preparing firebreaks around at-risk areas.

Fires continued to burn on five fronts in the ACT this morning, with houses on fire in the western suburbs of Duffy, Holder, Weston and Chapman.

About 2,500 people have been evacuated in 12 suburbs

TB, i give more credit to PP that others on this board, since much of the time, he states items or oppinions that are felt or reported in other coutries around the world, but for one reson or another, are distorted or missed in the US.

I have no problems with supporting him where i feel support is due and he knows this (i think)

in this case, I am pissed off that he is laughing at this, but then at the same time, if it wasn;t so close to home (3 hours drive and yes, i have a few friends living in canberra) i would possibly have found the topic amusing as well.
