It was at the height of lunch time, about 1 p.m., when a would-be robber walked into a Burger King, flashed his gun at one of the family diners, and demanded the diner fork over money and valuables, police said in a CBS report. The robber was exiting when the father, who feared for his and his family’s life, CBS said, took out his own gun and shot the suspect in the leg.

Have it your way.

It wasn't even about keeping his money, it was about shooting someone. The article clearly states the robber was already leaving so any fear the father had was at best invalid. He basically shot a man in the back for the LOLZ.

A guy who deserved it if you value fun over life and a guy I would have shot if I were in the same position but still.

What are the odds?

An armed robber walks into a crowded Burger King and chooses a table where a diner also has a pistol.

It makes a good story, but this sounds more like some kind of debt collection operation.

Makes sense to me.

If I was sitting there eating a whopper with my young child and some dude took my money and who was walking away and no longer a threat , I'd shoot him right in front of my child. The kid needs to learn. Then I'd beat my kid for not shooting the guy first.

Counselors were at Rockville High School Tuesday to speak with students there after a senior was found dead Monday morning.

Michelle Lynne Miller, 17, a varsity athlete, died in an apparent murder-suicide involving a man she met during recruitment to the U.S. Army Reserves, according to police.

Detectives believe U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Adam Anthony Arndt, 31, shot Miller and then himself inside his home in the 12900 block of Pinnacle Drive in Germantown, Md.

Police are still working to determine a motive in the shooting.

Kevin Miller, Michelle's father, said that he had not met Arndt, but that his daughter had seemed “a little smitten with this guy,” the Associated Press reported. However, he said he didn't believe there was a romantic relationship between the two.

Miller said he believed Arndt was the “man above her recruiter.” He thinks his daughter met Arndt about four or five months ago.

Michelle Miller had signed up to enter the Army Reserves after graduation. She wanted to someday become a military psychotherapist and work with wounded warriors, family members said, but it appears that her willingness to help may have taken her life.

Kevin Miller said Michelle received a call or text around 9 p.m. Sunday from someone whom she said was suicidal, reported News4's Darcy Spencer.

Michelle left their Rockville home at about 9:15 p.m. to help that person. Miller said he was opposed to her leaving, but his daughter said she would be fine and promised to text him the address when she arrived.

Kevin Miller said he got a “vague” text from her about the location, but she then stopped responding to his texts and calls, the AP reported.

Spencer reported that one of Michelle's friends said she received some texts from Michelle's phone. One text said Michelle loved her friend. The final one said, "Goodbye."

Family members told Spencer they believe the texts were sent by Arndt.

Michelle's friend gave Kevin Miller details about where she might be. He drove to the location and saw Michelle's car. No one answered the door, so he called police, the AP reported.

Officers went to the home about 8:50 a.m. Monday.

After failing to communicate with anyone inside, police broke into the home after 10 a.m. and found the bodies of Arndt and Michelle, police said.

Police found a firearm inside the house and are not looking for other suspects.

Arndt worked at a military recruiting office in Gaithersburg as a member of the Baltimore recruiting battalion, Spencer reported.

His duties included visiting schools, the AP reported. Army recruiters are barred from having personal relationships with recruits.

The Army said Tuesday morning that Arndt was a 9-year veteran who had served overseas in Korea, Germany and Turkey.

Neighbors told News4's Jim Rosenfield that Arndt seemed to be a pleasant neighbor. They believed he was married to another military member who was stationed in Fort Bragg, N.C.

They also said they'd seen Michelle Miller's car parked on Arndt's street before, but didn't recognize her picture.

"It's very startling," said a neighbor. "It's crazy to think this is all going on our street."

The neighbor said she used to see Arndt walking his dog. "He was pleasant. I didn't have a lot of interaction with him...." she said. "I had seen people coming and going pretty regularly. He seemed to be a social guy."

On Monday afternoon, Rockville High School sent a letter home to parents that read in part:

"For those of you who knew Michelle, we ask that you remember and celebrate her life. She was currently an athlete on our varsity lacrosse team, an honors/AP student, and an active member of the Senior Class. For those of you who did not know Michelle, we ask that you respect our sadness and support us with your understanding."

A classmate said she was shocked to hear the news.

"I was frozen in place. I felt like I couldn't move or breathe. I couldn't believe it," student Emily Kjellman told Spencer.

"Everyone was crying and so all of us started crying," she said.

"She was definitely one of the most popular girls in our school, but in a good way," Kjellman said. "She was probably the most fun-loving person you'll ever meet."

Kevin Miller said Michelle had wanted to go into the Army since elementary school.

“She wanted to serve her country; she wanted to see the world; she wanted to finance her education,” Kevin Miller said at his Rockville home Monday evening, according to the AP.

Michelle lettered in basketball, soccer and lacrosse.

26.AUBURN, ME, 3/31/13: A Newbury Street resident was hospitalized Sunday evening after accidentally shooting himself while attempting to clean his handgun. According to Sgt. Laurie Woodhead, a 22-year-old male was in his 38 Newbury St. apartment at about 7:20 PM, attempting to remove a bullet from the chamber of his .40 Glock in order to clean the weapon. Woodhead said the man was unaware his finger was positioned on the trigger when the gun discharged. The bullet entered his left palm and exited the side of his hand. In all fairness, though, he was aware of where 90 percent of his fingers were at the time. That's got to count for something.
27.NORTH HUNTINGDON, PA, 3/31/13: More caution with language than guns here. “A North Huntingdon Township officer who was off duty at the time was involved in an incident and had an unintentional discharge of a personally owned weapon, and this discharge did cause a hand injury to a second person,” township police Chief Andrew Lisiecki said. And really, is it fair to blame a police officer for not knowing the gun was loaded? He took the magazine out, after all.
28.YOUNGSTOWN, OH, 3/31/13: Isn't 35 a little old to be "playing" with a gun? At least he'll live to get the chance to kick the habit.
29.SALINE CO., MO, 3/31/13: The 14-year-old victim reported he suffered the injury while walking through the woods in southern Saline County when he slipped on a rock and fell on the pistol, which discharged, striking him in the leg.
30.WILTON, CT, 3/31/13: A 76-year-old man visiting family accidentally shot himself in the hand with his gun. Apparently he had removed it from his luggage, and "was considering whether or not to go outside the home with the gun, and shot himself while holding it, according to police. The man did not realize the gun had a bullet in it, police said." I wonder what he was considering, if he didn't even think it was loaded.
31.LANSING, IA, 3/31/13: The Allamakee County Sheriff's Office said the incident happened about 4:30 AM Sunday at a home near Lansing. Authorities said Logan Bunn fired a gun at a tree outside the home, but the bullet bounced back and hit him. Nothing good comes of 4:30 AM target practice.
32.FLAGSTAFF, AZ, 3/31/13: I didn't know it wasn't locked! Coconino County Sheriff's gun stolen from his truck, parked in his driveway. No, not a deputy. THE Sheriff.
33.OTTOWA, OH, 4/01/13: It's time to get serious about guns. An Ohio high school running back has been accidentally shot through both legs, a crime which I believe carries the death penalty in that state.
34.FAYETTEVILLE, WV, 4/01/13: Man shoots self in the shoulder. I'm sure he's fully insured and we won't be paying the cost of his enormously expensive helicopter flight to the hospital.
35.ALTUS, OK, 4/01/13: The investigation showed that the male was distraught because he accidentally shot his girlfriend, who was transported to Jackson County Memorial Hospital, before police arrived.

37.SPARTANBURG, SC, 4/01/13: A Spartanburg man told deputies that he was shot while attending a bonfire on Montgomery Road early Monday. The man said he was “mudding” at a place called the Clearance on Montgomery Road, and a large group of people were having a bonfire there, the report states. The man said he heard someone say, “Stop playing with the gun,” and then felt a burning sensation on his leg where he had been shot.
38.SANDY SPRINGS, GA, 4/01/13: 3-year-old freedomed in the thumb after crawling under the bed and finding dad's gun.
39.GASTONIA, NC, 4/01/13: Here's another example of a simple, everyday situation where adding guns makes things a thousand times worse. A 76-year-old fires shotgun at his female neighbor during a dispute over her dog, but says he never intended to harm her. Though it should be noted that 76-year-old man still thinks it was a male outside. See, his wife had just let their dog out onto their lawn, he says, when the Missus saw the neighbor's dog come "right over to him and I was scared he was going to kill him." What kind of vicious dog was this? A Labrador puppy, according to the neighbor. So 76-year-old man decides he'll just grab something to hit the dog with. So, he chose a shotgun. And paused to load it. "That was a mistake," he said. But it was only the first mistake, and the only one he accepts blame for. "I didn't shoot it. It went off." Oh, and by the way, the neighbors say 76-year-old man shouted to her, "(Racial epithet) you better get your dog out of my yard.'" The Missus insists that's not so, but added, "That's all they ever called them when we were growing up."
40.LAFAYETTE, IN, 4/02/13: Another one who apparently told the cops he was attacked, but who turns out to have accidentally shot himself.
41.PALM COAST, FL, 4/02/13: A dispute between Flagler County twin brothers involving a frying pan and machete ended with one possibly wounded and put in jail after a shot was fired and their mother charged with filing a false police report.
42.TROUTDALE, OR, 4/03/13: Yet another Responsible Gun Owner has bestowed the gift of Liberty on his neighbors, accidentally blasting a hole through three apartments and giving them the Freedom they didn't even know they wanted. Plus a head wound from flying debris. Huzzah! Huzzah for the Patriots! Huzzah for the Patriot with the now clean gun!
43.PHILADELPHIA, PA, 4/03/13: An off-duty cop "securing" his weapon joins the parade, putting yet another Liberty Projectile through a neighbor's so-called "private property." Private, indeed! What an elitist concept!
44.MILLICAN, OR, 4/03/13: Another near-perfect storm of FAIL: a retired sheriff's captain shoots himself in the hand while cleaning a gun at his annual qualification test at the police firing range.
45.LANCASTER, PA, 4/03/13: Guy put a .40-caliber handgun in his lap, intending to leave it in his car while he went into a store. The gun accidentally discharged, wounding the male's hand. Gun in lap, shot in the hand. Hmm. I'll stop thinking about that now.
46.RIVERSIDE, OH, 4/03/13: A woman accidentally shot herself and another woman inside an apartment tonight, police said. Police said one woman was holding the gun and it fired accidentally, hitting her and another woman in the apartment. No foul play is suspected.
47.ANTIOCH, TN, 4/03/13: Guy robs people in a parking lot, drops his gun during his getaway and shoots himself in the leg. And yes, he too got an expensive helicopter evacuation that we'll all be paying for.
48.MELBOURNE, FL, 4/03/13: Melbourne police arrested a member of Florida's National Guard on suspicion of threatening a group of women with a smoke grenade and an assault rifle. According to Melbourne police, William Soto Figueroa, 24, entered an apartment on Woodwind Trail—without permission—Wednesday night and scared four women inside with the grenade. The victims thought the smoke bomb was a grenade and ran into different rooms in the apartment, police said. Police say Figueroa left the apartment but later returned with an AR-15-style assault rifle. Responsible!
49.WALTERBORO, SC, 4/03/13: A woman was hit by a stray bullet falling out of the sky, in a WalMart parking lot. Police were able to follow the sound of continuing gunfire into a nearby swamp, where they found four men who said they'd been firing rounds from three rifles, four handguns and a shotgun, but who insisted they had been firing into the ground. Amazingly, though, one of their bullets had apparently driven through the center of the Earth, orbited halfway back around again, and landed just a half mile away in a WalMart parking lot. Either that, or they were maybe lying a little bit.
50.PENSACOLA, FL, 4/04/13: A man is recovering after being shot at the " In-n-Out" Deli on Old Palafox Street yesterday. According to family members Levontre Garrett works at the deli. They say he and another person were playing with a gun they thought was unloaded when he was accidentally shot in the shoulder.
51.BLACK HAWK, CO, 4/04/13: Armed robbers approached the driver of a car, brandishing a gun. The driver apparently fought back, and during the scuffle, the attacker's gun went off, hitting a female passenger in the leg. After which, the other robber reached into the car and stole her purse. Not the best defense ever, but they did catch the guys.
52.PHILADELPHIA, PA, 4/04/13: Airport confiscations, again. People who "forgot" their guns, again. This time, two separate discoveries in a single day.

So you would have shot the same douchebag for LOLZ, but you criticize the guy that got to him first? Help me understand the rationale of your thinking on this.

Hypothetically, do you both go to jail? Just one of you gets parole? How does your philosophy play out here?

Do you truly think he was serious about shooting the guy?

I admit at times that I'm a douche. Just like I admit that gun control would save lives but I'd rather keep my guns encase a president decides to open a secret prison and sanction torture or starts killing Americans with drones. God knows that my hand gun, shotguns and rifle are more than enough to overthrow the government when the time comes.

We both go to jail. The gun was clearly not fired in self defense, that time passed the moment his back was turned and he was leaving. I'd probably do the same thing as would everybody who's to the right of say Ghandi but that doesn't make it the right call.

We should leave it up to a jury to decide who is a douchebag and who is not, but it is strange that a robber would choose a crowded restaurant at lunch time.

It's just about as strange as restaurant patron shooting a man in the back and then claiming to have just been robbed.

and

It was at the height of lunch time, about 1 p.m., when a would-be robber walked into a Burger King, flashed his gun at one of the family diners, and demanded the diner fork over money and valuables, police said in a CBS report. The robber was exiting when the father, who feared for his and his family’s life, CBS said, took out his own gun and shot the suspect in the leg.

Have it your way.

"We should just have Mexico style gun control laws. It works great there."

How much better the world would be if everyone did this one little thing. ^^^^^

Wouldn't it though? It's not like there aren't several posters the OP included who are praising a man for shooting someone in the back. Presumably they would have done the same given the chance since they clearly think this man made the right call.
