The equipment is decades old but fully functional so no reason to upgrade. Bun molds hold 10, hot dog machines do 8. Huge expense to change and the makers claim only a very tiny percentage of questions and complaints are about that so they simply don't worry about it.
Why do buns come in 6 packs, but brats and dogs come in 5 packs?
Coincidence?

Just buy 5 packs of buns and 6 packs of dogs. problem solved. Hope you like dogs.

Eight is the normal quantity in a package of hot dog buns, and Ball Park beef franks come in packages of 8.

I forgot, the usual is 8. I got some fancy brat buns that have 6.
And yes, bun length angus Oscar franks come in 8 packs.

Vienna (the ONLY brand of dogs to buy) come in 8 packs, as do all the buns sold in this area. Who the hell buys a FIVE pack of hot dogs?

I can get any number of dogs or brats at Mr Prime Beef that I wish to buy. Much better than those in the cold case at the supermarket.

There's a local shop that does all kinds of Brat variants that are all excellent.True that. The local meat markets are far superior to any prepackaged lips and assholes.
I've had bison burgers as well. They're tasty, so I'm intrigued by the bison dogs.
