A young man enlists in the marine Corps during the Viet-Nam War. Her suffers traumatic injuries including loss of his left armat the elbow. After many months in military and VA hospitals he is released. His body still is wracked with pain. After a number of dead ends he goes to Thailand and lives on his diability pension and finds release and comfort in the arms of young Thai females.

I liked this general idea and think it could make a good story, but not being a history buff I know I could never make it good.

It could be called "UCLA on Pat Pong Road."

Hi there I must go along with the others and say I like the premises of this story,
And it has great possibility’s just to take it on a bit how about if he becomes besotted with one girl the problem is that she is the property of a warlord or brothel owner so the pain he has been through is nothing compared with what she put him through she puts him through

Wow, psychological and emotional conflict!
I'm liking this alot.

Shame that Xenon hasn't been back to brainstorm with us. I guess he was one of the many "one hit wonders" of Lit.

I just noticed the one post (point taken)

To all who have commented I have tried to reply in detail. Due to the restrictions on length here all I can say is my idea for this story focussed on the changes in the 'broken soldier's' psyche as he experienced some sort of healing and closure through compassionate sex with some young Thai women. I will exchange ideas in detail with anyone else who is interested. Thanks

Xenon,
Have you ever served in the military??? if not I have and I am willing to extend my assistance and knowledge with the current psyche if you ever decide to do a story of a more recent nature also I would like to hear more about this story it sounds interesting....i have a feeling that it will be a hit..

I don't know what viet-nam is like, politically, so I don't know if this is reasonable, but it seems to me an oportunity is being missed by not having him return to Viet nam, and having the girl or girls being the daughters of people who may have been friends or enermies. Not necesarily close, but just having inherited the same history from a different perspective.

Thanks for your perspective. James webb in'Lost Soldiers' published last year did something akin to what you are describing. I highly recommend this book one of webb's best. He has spent a lot of time in Viet-Nam in the last 10 years trying to get filming of his first, and still best, nove 'Fields of Fire' off the ground. Webb who was Sec of the Navy for a while in the Reagan administration is the real thing. A heavily decorated Marine combat veteren who still carries pieces of shrapnel around in him as permanent souvenirs from the war. He is also a fine prose writer and a definite maverick. Anything he has written is worth reading but 'Lost Soldiers' while a bit to pat in its ending will fascinate you.

I've been playing with the idea of 'the broken soldier' for some time... not exactly your concept of Thailand, Xenon, but the psychological process. What goes through the mind of a man, trained and nurtured to be a fit, dynamic fighter, when he can no longer fulfill this role? What comfort can possibly help him deal with such a drastic change in life?
The helplessness of being 'broken'... the contrast to the power of being whole... having to ask for help instead of giving it, being passive instead of dominant. For a man to have to do that... to me, there's a very strong erotic element in a powerful man having to submit to others.

Your story concept would be fascinating to develop. It actually is more subtle than mine and deals with how individuals cope with drastic changes in their lives. Any number of individuals could be the protagonist. An industrialist or other mover and shaker suddenly cut down by a paralyzing accident a la Christopher Reeve would fill the bill. My protagonist is from a much more humble station. A man who went from high school to enlist in the Marine Corps and was perhaps a PFC or LCPL when maimed in combat. His story is how a man with no wealth or position gains the ability to climb back onto life after suffering a crushing blow right at the start. The mechanism that enables him to regain his feet is warm sustained compassionate sex from women not of his own culture.
