as I fell asleep the phrase "Broken Robots Having Sex :" appeared in my mind & seems to be stuck there.

maybe it is a plot bunny, or even a story idea. But I don't write sci-fi (or is it Non-Human?).

I picture a storage room of broken robots- not skin jobs but with the metal showing, more CP3O than Tricia Helfer. In my mind's eye, I see one that has a chrome shin and a tarnished brass chest plate.

One day one of the research assistants (or caretakers?) comes out of the storage room to tell his (or her?) boss that a couple of the broken robots seem to have repaired themselves & when he went in to get copier paper, he(or she?) walked in on them having sex...

No idea where it might go next....but it ends with sex. robot sex.

Why are "broken robots having sex" anyway? Cyborgs, or at least their base units, might reproduce sexually. Robots and androids would not. So, if 'bots are fucking, it's because:

1) they were sex'bots to begin with; or
2) their programming was corrupted, maybe by a nefarious player; or
3) a mystery force has transformed them from metallic to organic life; or
4) the broken'bots have been replaced by alien infiltrators; or
5) there is no reason -- hey, this is LIT! Anything goes!

This leads to a disturbing thought. Laurel has said that the underage rule includes aliens and nonhumans that *appear* to be underage. Does that include robots? Are some of those broken'bots childlike in appearance? How about a sex'bot that easily changes its apparent age? Some writers may be tempted to play the underage card here.

According to the Three Laws of Robotics, robots will have sex if you tell them to (as long as nobody gets hurt).

So..... the robots are performing amorous activities at the urging of their human masters, for amusement and possibly for filming and posting on porn sites. The question is.... is it arousing to watch? In the hands of a skillful writer, perhaps it could be.

leaning #2, but might be a mix of #2 and #1... maybe the defunct sexbot corrupted the other damaged units ?

do the human get involved, or just watch?

Watching robots fuck won't be much fun unless the 'bots are programmed as performers. Much more fun to watch human-bot interactions.

Mike the robo-mechanic was hired to repair a binful of broken 'bots. He converts a few to sex'bots and sets them playing amongst themselves, but that's boring, so he includes himself in the action. His spray of sperm into one metallo-vaginal orifice shorts-out a circuit and turns the fem'bot aggressive. She fucks him to death. Ah, one human down, nine billion to go! She easily hacks his phone and invites all his friends in for fuck-to-death sessions, and then all their friends, ad infinitum. Human extinction ensues. The end.

but what about the sequel?

Setting aside cyborgs and sticking to just robots and ignoring obvious sex-bot options, I can see a number of ways to take that.

1-AIs were created by simulating models of human minds, and so sometimes develop more human-like traits. Here you have two sexual beings trying to find intimacy/pleasure in bodies not designed for it.

2-AI computers are incredibly complex things that can only be created by nano-robots, but laws on nano-machines are incredibly strict to prevent a "grey goo" doomsday. Among them being that nano-robots cannot create nano-robots/cannot endure non-artificial conditions/cannot be created in conditions they can function it. To get around this, one "sex" of robots is made that can produce nano-robots capable of making an AI brain, another "sex" contains an artificial environment where they can make it, and once it's made, it's removed from "her" to put in a pre-built chassis. There you have sexual reproduction in robots!

3-AIs are programs that must always be running, as a full shut-down results in death of the personality. They are also incredibly difficult to start up, requiring borrowing 90% of the computing power of 2 other "brains" to boot up. The peak computational surge nearly overloads the other 2 AIs, who experience something analogous to orgasm at the time. (Optional creepy points if they're doing this next to the "body" of a "dead" robot to put a new personality in its "brain" after repairing the physical damage)

Those should work for plot rabbots :p

Intriguing

Intriguing idea.

I think of some kind of energy source that humans start using that turns out to be a robot aphrodisiac.

Makes robot parts start struggling to fit together.

I think describing the urgency of the robots need for unification could be a turn on for human readers.

Not my cup of tea, though.

1. As mentioned, Robosexual Porn. I am completely convinced that this will be a real thing in the future. Contrary to the sentiment that it's not as much fun without people, I would guess that the appeal would be precisely that the participants are obviously non-human.

OR

2. In private, robots are trying to understand human beings by behaving the way humans do. Naturally, they miss the actual point of these human behaviors, but that doesn't stop them from experimenting.

OR

3. Repressed programmers accidentally left Freudian code in the robot's memories, instructing robots to perform his/her sexual fantasies without even realizing it. Imagine the embarrassment. Unless it turns out someone gets curious about following up on what they see the robots doing.
