Break-A-Leg, Baby

No, not real bones. The theater kind.

We open Bye Bye Birdie tomorrow. It runs through the weekend and includes a catered Dinner Theater on Saturday. I direct.

It's a cute show. Girls get to wear poodle skirts, guys slick their hair back, everybody oohs and aahs when the Elvis-like Conrad Birdie shakes his hips and sings.

Nothing deep, no great message, no saving the world.

Just singing and dancing with ninety kids in the cast and crew, and me about to drop from exhaustion.

But the show must go on, baby.

So, if you wish, please send positive thoughts our way? Kids are prepared and polished but you just never know . . .

This is dedicated to Sweetsubsarahhh, or what's left of her after this weekend.

Kids!
I don't know what's wrong with these kids today!

Kids!
Who can understand anything they say?

Kids!
They're disobedient, disrespectful oafs!
Noisy, crazy, dirty, lazy, loafers!
While we're on the subject:

Kids!
You can talk and talk till your face is blue!

Kids!
But they still just do what they want to do!

Why can't they be like we were,
Perfect in every way?
What's the matter with kids today?

Kids!
I've tried to raise him the best I could

Kids! Kids!
Laughing, singing, dancing, grinning, morons!
And while we're on the subject!

Kids!
They are just impossible to control!

Kids!
With their awful clothes and their rock an' roll!

Why can't they dance like we did
What's wrong with Sammy Caine?
What's the matter with kids today!

Break a leg!

You too, ESL!

The last time someone told me to break a leg before going onstage, I actually did it. Broke my ankle the next day. I don't know if that counts, though.

You go girl! Break a leg!

Bye Bye Birdie is a wonderfully fun musical and good on ya for taking up the director position. I don't envy you a bit. Having experienced dinner theatre as a chorus member there is no way I would direct. I prefer to photograph the show. Just the same doll -- knock 'em dead! :rose: :rose: :rose:

Here's wishing you :rose:es tossed on stage and standing Os (ovations, that is) after every performance!

Good luck to you both. I'm thoroughly in awe of anyone who performs on stage, let alone someone who organises as well; good on you!

The Earl

I wish your troupe brilliant success and :rose:es, Sarah!

Thanks for the good thoughts, everyone. It was a job well done tonight. I'm tired but very pleased.

My now-experienced actors are thrilled. They're so new to the entire performance aspect they hadn't quite realized how much fun performing can be.

To me, practice can be drudgery, but performing is a blast.

I look for even better shows over the weekend.

Here's a pic. I didn't mention that my daughter is part of the group. See if you can pick her out -

(Oh - she's wearing a sweater, an I Love Conrad Birdie pin, scarves in her hair and a poodle skirt.) :cathappy:

Good on you Sarah.

Though the audience was very pleased, ours was a learning experience for the cast. Stumbles and falls but the story came through and they all wanted to work into the night to fix things for tonight. So we shall see what comes of it.

Old theatre adage: You can't learn their lines for 'em.

You're doing a difficult show. I'm glad to hear your audience was very pleased, but I'm more impressed to know that your group wanted to bust their butts after hours to fix the problems.

Speaks well of the director.

Break a leg.

Done.

And done.

And despite major sound system issues we pulled tonight's show off.

I spent most of the first half of the show backstage on my hands and knees in the dark. That's not really as much fun as it sounds because I had a flashlight in my mouth and was tearing apart the wallboard to locate a possible break in the cables.

I tightened up the lines, replaced a specific cord, we moved the main from A to C and - ta da! - we were working again.

But in the meantime, the actors made it work. After a scene or two, they began to compensate for the mike difficulties. They came through despite the adversity.

Later, the party was incredible. They had a blast. I had a drink. (Water)

But now I'm home. And I'm not having a drink, I'm having a chocolate cream pie shake from Sonic. Much better. Sore throat, aching shoulders, tired smile, but a terrific sense of a job well done.

And maybe now I can get to writing again?
