Why do so many people approach life as an and/or proposition? Why can't it be both/and?

And/or is so restrictive. I am a friend to both God and the Devil. I am yin and yang. I don't believe that having one thing means I can't have something else.

These are false restrictions placed on us by a repressive society.

Yin me, yang me, both/and. Hell yeah.

I am BOTH black AND white...I will never choose between the two...and I find those that do to be foolish

I'm the nicest person you'll ever meet, and I'm the cruelest bitch on the block.

I'll take a man and a woman (it's really much more fun that way)

Intelligent and unintelligent

Rich and poor

I'd surely take both/and over either/or.

I read it a long time ago... I need to do so again. The impetus for this particular thread actually came from the latest Tom Robbins book - and I wouldn't be surprised he got it himself from Keirkegaard.

Life is all restrictions and choice. It's an series of forks in the road - some small, some large. At each fork, a choice is made. You can't turn left AND right at the stoplight. You can't be married AND single. You can't have kids AND not have kids. With every choice made, an opportunity is lost...and an opportunity is taken. That's the way it goes.

I want life to be Both/And...

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to ever work out that way for me.
