On Deviant Art every week I get at least 2 bot accounts telling me my writing is amazing and they think they are an equally amazing artist and they can turn my words into pictures, if I give them money. I just need to follow them on a discord name that doesn't match their DA account name.

The reason I say this is that I have just been followed here by a brand new account that says they are an artist. They are following three accounts and have left 3 comments.

I am now cynically now waiting for a comment on one of my stories telling me my work is amazing and they can see lots of potential for collaboration....

If the comments they leave are the same scammy ones these people leave, you can still report the account, even if it's just other people's stories they've commented on, because soliciting commercial products is against the TOS and Laurel is smart enough to understand what they're doing with those vague comments.

Source: I reported one of these accounts a while back, and it was deleted.

I get this on Discord.

It does NOT make me happy.

Yep, got one on Discord who "read" my story on AO3, and the jerk didn't even have the decency to leave a kudos on the story they supposedly loved. Pro tip: At least leave a record that you read the damn thing before hitting me up for cash.

I had one on another site, who said they were drawn by the "strong visual imagery." Anyone who's read my stories knows that "visual imagery" is not my strength.

The funniest two of these I ever had was:
1) one stating that they found this latest chapter captivating, enjoyed the world building I'd done and couldn't see where I'd take the plot next. Only, it was a comment on a blog post, not a story
2) One talking about the richness of my prose. But there wasn't any prose, because they commented on a drawing I did.

Clearly no human had read (or looked at) what they were commenting on. I've seen ones which aren't bots though, they are humans, but they're still scammers.

I would not want a kudos from any scammers on there. It feels dirty and there's no way to get rid of them either.

Unfortunately, I didn't realize they were scammers at first. So I allowed myself some satisfication in their appreciation. Hungry for approval I suppose.
So I was angry when I received the offer of "mentorship". The first one may not have been a bot, as she kept trying to re-approach my "no thank you's" from different angles until I finally blocked her. She got past my defenses by asking to DM in the public forum first. So I thought..."sure, why not."

Now I am experienced and bitter.

If you ever want somebody to just fuck with your mind... I'm sure there are plenty around here that would do it for free.

Sorry to hear you went through that. I haven't experienced this on Lit, but on some sites I've seen the scammers use an LLM to scrape the story so their spam comment can reference certain parts of it. Like, "I was really impressed by how so-and-so did such-and-such, it was really in character for them, and the part where you did XYZ was hilarious," etc.. All to butter you up before they move into whatever grift they want to rope you into.

Before I was like, "Yay, somebody commented!" But nowadays I have to scrutinize everything extra hard. 😅

Mine happened on the Quibble Discord server. It's bad. I get unasked for friend requests every day. Most are bots...new and no history.

The incident I mentioned above was borne from a discussion within the channel, that's why I deemed it genuine. I thought we were two writers talking shop.

I think because DeviantArt has embraced AI and started allowing paid members to upload and sell AI porn, it will naturally lead to more automatic spam accounts. I've seen some accounts on here that were made within about a day of posting spam in the BDSM subforum, and the accounts appear to disappear rather quickly.

It's usually a spammy advertisement from a Dominatrix(Some random dude) trying to FinDom gullible men.

And that's in the forum where things don't have to wait for moderators to push them through. I imagine for comments on stories they will have to be tricky about sneaking their spam through. Like a long comment full of compliments with a 'pay me for my AI generated book covers' somewhere in the middle. But even then, I think most authors would be insulted and deleted it themself if it slipped through.

hmmm their comment must be held up in approval.

Still only following three authors and three comments...

I am genuinely excited waiting to get this exciting feedback.

I hear a lot of Russian cybercrime bots were uploaded to the Flammagenitus Cloud recently. But Chinese, Iranian, and North Korean servers are still 'business as usual.' (Plus numerous non-state-based criminal actors.)
