Apparently he had outlived his usefulness to the CIA. They get a "two-fer," get rid of a washed up spy and do it in spectacular fashion in the heart of Moscow to blame it on the Russian government. The CIA isn't dumb.

The average "westerner" won't even stop to consider that the only people who could possibly benefit from taking out Nemtsov in such a public and spectacular fashion are Russia's enemies. President Putin and his administration would gain nothing positive from such a crime. If they were really afraid of Nemtsov, they could just arrest him. In reality, Nemtsov has been a marginal figure for years, and was no threat to a government with 80% approval ratings.

Ah, the Russian trolls have invaded Lit.

Putin is known to kill off anyone who seriously threatens his administration and Nemtsov was just another in a long line of such people. If what is said is true, that Nemtsov had evidence of Russia's obvious involvement in sending troops and equipment to invade Ukraine, then that is reason enough to kill him.

But thank you for playing the "Russians are so stupid. . ." game.
