Poets,

I admire poets like REDWAVE who actively pursue things that matter to him. RED's commitment to civil action encourages me.

I haven't been involved in marches like RED, but I have done something that is important to me. Lotus sponsors a literacy program for children.

Nubia Leadership Academy is our sponsored school for Books For Kids. During February and March, we will pool our resources and efforts to purchase needed books for the school. Click on the links to view requested books. You can purchase directly from amazon.com

Our goal is to purchase a minimum of $200 in books. Additionally, we'd like to forward needed classroom supplies. We thank you in advance for your donation. Together, we can positively impact the lives of our children.

Peace,

zawadi

About Nubia:

"Nubia Leadership Academy is a K-6 Charter school in San Diego, California. It was established in 1997 with the goal of creating a community-based, child-centered learning environment that promotes the development of: leadership, self-confidence, academic excellence, and art appreciation. Being a 98% African-American school population, we spend a good amount of time learning black history, and about positive role models they can look at as examples of achievement. But we also spend time getting to know other people and cultures as well, so our children can live in our diverse world with acceptance and understanding. As an inner-city school, we sometimes have trouble acquiring all the materials we would like to enrich the classroom experience. And especially in the K-1 grades, where children are just discovering books--you can never have enough. Ideally a classrooms selection of books should be always expanding and growing. However when funds are not available in schools, and teachers excess income is limited, that doesn't always happen. Here at Nubia the K-1 teachers share books between classrooms and grade levels. Books are so much more than just a learning tool to our children--they are magical! Reading takes them to places they have never been---and helps them look through the eyes of other people. Please help us continue to take them on learning journeys! We genuinely appreciate anything you can do for our children, and our school."

Nubia's Wish List

p.s. For our first school, we purchased 42 titles totaling $362.00. Our goal is to reach $400.

Where are the links? I only see the one for amazon, or are the links you're talking about there? I not that familiar with amazon.
How about sending amazon gift certificates to you online? Would that be better?

The Link

The amazon link is the link to Nubia's wish list. Donors can purchase items the teacher wants for her class or you can purchase a gift certificate for the school.

No money is sent to me or Lotus. If you want, you can purchase a gift certificate for Lotus and send it to me, and I can purchase on their behalf.

The idea is to make it easy to donate to Nubia. Purchases made from their wish list are shipped directly to school. Gift certificates are held in their account.

I checked the link and it works. Thanks.

Peace,

daughter

Okay, it takes me to their wish list this time when I click it. Thanks.

What a wonderful idea! Speaking as a former teacher, a passionate advocate of literacy, and a mom, this program Daughter and Lotus Blooms are sponsoring is just great. It will put quality books in the hands of children who might not otherwise have them. I recently edited a book on programs like this one. The book reported that longitudinal research on such programs shows that they do make a difference in childrens' literacy.

The link Daughter provided takes you to a wish list at amazon.com with a wide variety of titles and price range that begins under ten bucks.

Thank you for sharing this Daughter.

Get involved if you can, Poets. You can't change the world, but you can buy a kid a book.

(ok, officially off soapbox. ;))

Thanks, Angeline

Poets,

To date 27 titles, totaling $297 have been purchased for Nubia.

Thank you so much for your generous support. Just a little from many can do so much.

On another note, I spoke to 4 different groups today at a local school. I planned a full schedule of activities and readings. I read poetry to the 2nd and the 6th graders. To have their attention the way they listened, and then for them to excitedly ask questions, made all the preparations, money (lots of prizes and gifts), and nervousness worthwhile.

It is amazing to see a child light up from learning. Sharing a love for the arts, creativity and passion for learning with kids is one of the most gratifying experiences I have ever known.

Peace,

D
