How many of y'all know about this site? Use it?

Bookmooch

It's a damn good idea, and I registered with them today.

The deal is, you list the books you're willing to give away, and for each book you list, you get 1/10 of a point. You also get points for giving away books.

Like Amazon, you have a wishlist, but the cool thing is, when someone lists a book you want, they notify you, and you can "mooch" the book from them - costs you one point to mooch. All it costs you money-wise is the postage when you send a book to someone who has "mooched" from you.

I've already gotten confirmation on two books headed my way, and one that someone wants from me - this within 2 hours of listing my books.

Pretty damn cool. :)

Why didn't I hear of this before I gave the books I didn't want to the local library? *cries*

I think you also get points for having "friends" a la MySpace.

If anyone signs up, let me know, and we'll get a network going.

Don't cry. *pats Dampy on the head*

Has anyone heard of WOWIO? It's a great site that gives you free eBooks. The sign up is kind of a hassle, and it's only available in the states, but it's still cool. They need some kind of picture ID to confirm your identity. I just scanned a copy of my student ID from 8 years ago and they accepted that just fine. The site has some decent stuff on there too.

I had a bit of a look around there. You can search for books via country. The UK was one of the autopick options. There's over 8000 moochable books in Australia, and it wasn't!

I joined bookmooch from a co-worker, and I've sent out 3 books, gotten 3 already and waiting on 2. I'm hooked.

is the postage prohibitive?

I joined, btw... so search for Vermilion if you get bored :D
No books up yet, mind...

You just saved a huge box of book from going to a second hand store or the dump (depending) and they thank you.

I'm slowly cleaning out my house and getting rid of a bunch of suff that's just sitting there. It's either going to charity, or if it's not usuable, the dump. I'd rather send my books to someone who wants them, than the dump or to sit on a second hand self. (every store I've been to of second hand stores has a massive section of books no one visits... it's kind of sad, you find some real gems there)

I put my work address instead of my home address just cause I'm paranoid about things like that. It doesn't matter, all packages come through me any how :p

I've bookmarked it. I'll explore when I've got a little more time.

I haven't joined yet, but I have bookmarked it for future reference. Most of my books have been in boxes for several years, but i keep buying and my parents handed over several boxes of theirs recently, so I'm bound to have double-ups to move when I finally get to take them out again.

Bookins.com is a similar site, except you don't have to pay the postage. You print it out at home and you are charged $3.99 for every book received. I like not having to go to the post office every time I want to send a book. You earn points for every book sent- 4-8 points for a paperback, 8+ for a hardcover and so forth. More recent books are worth more points.

I've been on for close to a year now and I've discovered books I never would have picked up in a bookstore... all for MUCH cheaper.
