I'm going to be spending 10 days beach/pool side next month and I'm looking for some reading material. Fiction or historical fiction only please. No romantic fluff.

What say you?

I liked The Hunger Games. Bourne Identity is a classic. Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. QB VII and Exodus.

I've been wondering about Hunger Games, but didn't know any one that had read it. Read the Tattoo books and surprisingly Exodus about 27 years ago. Also loved his Mila 18. I think those got me interested in the Holocaust/historical fiction.

There's an old series of historical fiction by John Jakes, "The Kent Family Chronicles" that I loved. The first book in the series is "The Bastard".

Ahhhhh yes, didn't he do those North and South books? I think that was the Civil War?

~ The Historian - Elizabeth Kostova.

~ People of the Book - Geraldine Brooks.

~ Anything by Guy Gavriel Kay, but I'd start off with either The Lions Of Al-Rassan and the Sarantine Mosaics.

~ Stonehenge: A Novel - Bernard Cromwell.

~ Cry of the Peacock - Gina Nahai

Tom Clancy - perfect beach read.

That's off the top of my head.

Okay now these are all new reads for me, but Clancy. Will look into these. I think maybe a book per every two days is what's in order. Not taking my e-reader either this year. It's hard to read in sunlight and got scratched up a couple times from the sand. So must be in paper/soft back.

I just thought of another one that I almost always bring with me: James Rollins. It's light and fast, but still very much fun for beach reads.

Ken Follett is great general/historical fiction. Pillars of the Earth and the sequel World Without End are two of my favorite books. Fall of Giants is also a fantastic work set around World War I.

I looked into this author. This looks like great fast paced adventure reading.

Great! Thank you Mike!

I also like thrillers, something with a twist. Or humorous . Just no horror, I don't want to keep checking under the bed.

The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield.

I've loved this book since the first time I flipped through it at a bookstore. I didn't buy it then, but I've thought about it for years. I finally found it again a couple of months ago on Amazon and bought it.

This may sound nerdy but, you should read Dune. if you have not. It is in my all time top ten list

I would add the Sharpe series by Bernard Cornwell (same author as fire_breeze mentioned). The series chronicles one character during the Peninsula campaign of the Napoleonic war. The first book published is Sharpe's Eagle.

The Fort by the same author depicts a battle from the American Revolutionary war from the British point of view.

The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield.

I couldn't find much info on it but it was Victorian in nature.

House of leaves

One review said this was horror? Ghosts and such? I can't do scary.

For something unusual, try:

Angelology - Danielle Trussoni
Pattern Recognition - William Gibson
The Unlimited Dream Company - JG Ballard
Smila's Sense of Snow - Peter Hoeg

For historical fiction try:

Marks of Cain: The Cagots of Aquitaine - Tom Knox
something from the Shardlake series by C.J.Sansom

Happy Reading !

Thank you Jerry..Smila sounds interesting. I vaguely remember when the movie was out. Didn't it have that weirdo Bjork in it? I think maybe I'm not so interested in sic fi or fantasy so much though. Going to look up your historical fiction choices.

Thank you!

Smila is on my Top 10 list. But maybe that's because it is set in Copenhagen and Greenland. The book was much better than the movie, and it was the very beautiful Julia Ormond, not Bjork. lol. It is an adventure, murder mystery, love story with a strong female lead character.

cheers !

I've got to agree with the Kay, Kostova and Rollins recommendations. I've enjoyed all of their books that I've read.

I enjoy reading alternative historical fiction, not sure if that would be in your interests or not. Harry Turtledove's Days of Infamy books are an interesting look at a WWII where the Japanese were successful at Pearl Harbor. S M Stirling's Island in the Sea of Time series goes back to the Bronze Age.

I read some Iwo Jima stories before that were interesting. I really like making the character come to life in a real situation.

it's bernard cornwell. he has a few historical fiction novels out. the sharpe chronicles being most popular, but don't let that influence you! :D

stonehenge, in my view, is the least impressive. if you're looking for the US POV, try the starbuck chronicles.
