Our most valued book, not our most valuable, is a large 19th copy of Cervantes Don Quixote illustrated by Gustave Doré.
More than forty years ago, we had been married six weeks when we saw the book in a secondhand bookshop in Hastings, East Sussex. The price was ten pounds. We couldn't afford it.
We looked at it longingly but walked away. Half an hour later we passed the bookshop again. We stopped outside and looked at the book still on show in the window.
We counted out just how much money I had in my pockets and she had in her handbag. We had a few small coins more than ten pounds.
We bought it and have treasured it ever since. We had to live on rice and pasta for the rest of the month because we were broke.
It has nearly one thousand of Doré's illustrations. This picture is about full size:
We could easily buy another copy today but it wouldn't be our copy. It was our first major purchase as a married couple.
Not quite what you'd expect.
I love these booknook thingies.
