If you are into bondage, then you will need an arsenal of knots to help you.

How about sharing some of your very favorites.

1) the type of knot(s) you use,

2) the best type of rope for it,

3) where you use it, and

4) basic directions on tying it.

It you have a pic to share, that is even better.

I admit I am "knot challenged" and could use some pointers!

Do not post links to books. This thread is to share your favorites.

For me, a knot that is hard and fast works!

There is nothing more deflating than having the knots giving way in the middle of a scene and the Dom knot noticing. *smirks*

So, take notes all and share, share , share!

The Boy Scout in me....

....goes to the Reef Knot for most general uses, with the Half-Hitch and Bowline being handy for quick release and varied dimensions, respectively.

Then there's the Sheep Shank......which I forget how to tie, but love to say because it just sounds nasty.

Spill the beans! How do you tie it?

Have I said recently how much I really love rope? There is so much you can do with it............
I spent hours in our downstairs work room learning diffrent way to tie but working for a few years on a billboard crew I learned how to tie many knots that won't let ya down.......If ya know what I mean....

Read on it is great!!!!!;)

Wizard! Wonderful to see you again!

I love ropes and Himself and I were discussing knots just the other day and I went to Half Price Books and found a wonderful book on knot tying.

I am working on a few just in case...

Great links, Wizard, thanks.

In all seriousness, I often tell novices that one of the first things they should buy is the Boy Scout handbook.

That's a good idea, and one I have never thought of.

I was an Akela (Cub scout* leader) for a few years ... when I was teaching knot tying, I used two different colours of rope. That seemed to make it easier for the kids to learn.

If you dont have two different colours of rope to practice with ... just die one end of a length - ink or food colour would work for this.

*Not sure if you have Cubs in the US. It is the younger division of Scouts - for boys (and now girls) aged 8 to 11

They have the cub scouts here too, but I have never known anyone who was one.

Using two different colors of rope sounds like a very good idea. I think I saw some in the store the other day. I'm gonna go get some! Thanks! These are all great ideas.

This is something that Master really wants to get more info on. Thanks for the links Wizard.

Anyone else got a fav knot they like to use? And How do you tie that knot? Just call me the clueless one on knots, of course as a sub all I need to know is I can't get out of it easily...lol.

I was a boy scout but I got kicked out for eating a brownie!

God, I love that joke... but seriously, I was a rock climber for a while and learned a few things that have come in handy. For instance, books on rock climbing have great knot chapters.

Some things to consider about knots. They should be easy to tie and should not "jam". (A knot that jams is one that is very hard to untie.) Another thing to consider is how much the breaking strength of the rope is reduced by the knot. (this is really not much of a concern unless you are using the rope for suspension)

A tied swiss seat makes a wonderful crotch rope.

How to tie a Swiss seat:
Use a piece of rope < 1/2 in. in diameter and 10-13' long.
Fold the rope in half and form a 2-3 inch loop in your left hand and place it on your left hip.
Reach behind your back with your right hand, grab one running end of the rope and bring both ropes around to your front. One running end of the rope should be longer than the other. Do not attempt to even them out.
Tie an overhand (granny) knot below your belly button and tighten it against your body.
Allow the ropes to dangle between your legs, squat, reach from behind grasping one rope in each hand and bring them up the crack of your ass to the small of your back. NOTE: You can cross them between your legs or knot them in strategic places.
pass both ropes between your back and the waist rope.
Grasp one free end in each hand, squat and at the same time pull down on both ropes. This will tighten the crotch rope. Pass the free end of each rope behind the corresponding one coming up from your ass.
Keeping tension on both ropes, pull them to the outside of your body and stand up. This creates locking half-hitches in the rear.
Bring both ropes to your left hip. Tie a square knot to secure the whole thing. Trim off the excess rope and then it will be the perfect size for next time.

these instructions have been edited for bdsm play. The picture shows the non-BDSM version.

Most knots you want are flat so they will not hurt. You want to miss the spine when tieing as they also can hurt.

There are so many tie knots you can put in to touch the best places so as you move around you feel them gently rub your most tender spots.:D

flat knots...

If you want your knots to be flat, and your "rope" to be less chafing, consider using 3/4" or 1" nylon webbing. You can get it at any rock climbing or outdoor store. (REI, EMS, Gallian's, etc)

This will lead you every where in the knot world.

http://www.earlham.edu/~peters/knotlink.htm

Just a bit of digging there will reveal many illustrated "how to" lessons.

As for rope? Nothing beats a shiny clean white twisted nylon. 3/8" to 1/2" is just about right for most any thing, and rather photogenic. It is as cheap at Walmart as anywhere.

hope this helps.
