They only have to do everything right, if there is a camera or outside witness watching. Without the camera, it's the word of a cop against the word of a suspect, and the 'word of a suspect never wins. Every single cop should be wearing a camera on his uniform, or his belt or his hat, and have another in his cruiser, and none of the cameras should be under the control of the patrolman.

If we can use traffic cameras to track suspects through cities, and to find bombers, perhaps it is time to use cameras to ensure public servants are doing their jobs properly as well.

Oh yeah, I know all about 'errors are common in municiple court preceedings' and 'since the officer has served the community we are going to take his word for it' kinda stuff.

The cameras would be a good help, I wouldn't doubt, though, that there is many a police officer that loves the idea of a camera, and/or would voluntarily wear one.

...but cameras are just a fix to a root problem of dishonesty in an individual.

For instance, did you know that in-car cameras for recording a traffic stop only record for 30 seconds before the officer turns on his flashing lights?

So how does an in-car camera prevent entrapment or harrassment? What if the officer isn't wearing his body camera when he or she or shim breaks the law?

*also: I have yet to hear if a camera system that has caught a bomb suspect.

They do a job I don't want and could never do, but they don't have to be a dick about it.

Amen. A-fucking-men.

I like the idea.
It still won't stop the colored people from trying to make a hero out of every two bit hood rat that gets killed during a crime but it will help.

The UK has far more camera systems per head of population than almost any country in the world. Many of them are operated by local city halls under strict controls that ensure they are acceptable as evidence in a court.

They have caught terrorist bombers and have convicted policemen who acted improperly.

But most Police body cameras seem to be used to produce 'documentary' TV programmes cheaply. The body camera and auto camera footage is interleaved with staged shots of police cars speeding to the scene.

What is surprising is how many suspects are willing to give permission for the camera footage to be used for commercial TV.

Having said that - the general UK Police response to abuse from suspects seems to be much less aggressive than US Police response to similar abuse. Are body cameras responsible? I don't think so. It is a different philosophy of law enforcement.

...and policing a less assertive populace. Your dregs were shipped to America or Australia depending on whether they volunteered to go.

I have a few friends in the world of law enforcement. For me, I think cameras are a good safety item. However, I want the guys (and girls) in uniform to be able to turn them off. I really don't want to see any of my buddies dicks just because they happened to look down to aim while taking a leak. Noor do I want to see my female cop friends trying to lean over and insert a tampon.

Lets face it, some things we don't wanna know. Just my $.02, no one has to agree if they don't want to.

We still have a large number left, we have grown many more, and we have imported/re-imported a few since then.

We even see Americans and Australians on our streets.

My brother has a dashboard cam and body cams are coming. He and a lot of officers already were using digital voice recorders before talking to anyone. If nothing noteworthy happens, you record over it. If it gets into who said what you have a record.

I was having problems with a local cop. My brother advised me to record. Not because of me, but that cop ended up indicted, so I should have.

I don't think so, once cops learn how to set off blacks and juries see the show.

Given some of the UK police footage from video cameras, getting suspects to look bad on camera is very easy, especially if they are drunk and/or high.

But they also show UK police being very tolerant of bad behaviour, giving suspects multiple chances to walk away peacefully.

There seems to be a misconception about how the cameras work. Not everything they record goes in to the police archives. They have limited memory that gets overwritten constantly using FIFO. Much like an airplane's "black box". The images are only saved if the officer stops recording.

I did hear on the radio that they actually only start recording if the officer starts them recording, but that would be an extremely ignorant design.
