Bob Dylan Nobel Literature winner

The Nobel Prize in Literature 2016 was awarded to Bob Dylan "for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition".

I was wondering why this prize wasn't announced at the typical time. Maybe they were having an argument about it, since they've never gone the songwriter route. The Swedes were probably complaining, "Hey, what about ABBA?"

Just don't ask him to sing.

I have nightmares of being trapped in the back of my dad's van on summer road trips, the back speakers blasting Dylan. We used to shove pillows in front of them to muffle it somewhat.

This sounds familiar... :)

The Nobel Prizes in Chemistry, Physics and Medicine are worthwhile efforts.

The Nobel Prizes for Economics, Literature and "Peace" are stupid.

No. You don't approve of the Nobel given to anyone after they bestowed the prestigious award upon King Barrack.

Surprisingly (or not), I kind of think the complete opposite: I think all important medical and scientific research should be openly shared and public, to encourage sharing and collaboration instead of protectionism and competition. All the fluffy subjects can keep their Nobel prizes.

Bob Dylan tops my list for music but he aint Nobel material. That said he'll be remembered longer than the Nobel Niggers.

What does Nobel prices have to do with that? Many Nobel winners openly and publicly share their research. Arguably most. Sort of goes without saying since most of them are in the academic world and the common procedure for research at universities is public peer review.

Thus has not been my experience, but I like to think you're right. :)

ObTopic: The Swedish Academy specifically cited BLONDE ON BLONDE which begins with EVERYBODY MUST GET STONED. <toke> Yeah, the good shit. <puff> I'll have some too, thanks.

The man has an Oscar and a Pulitzer to put alongside his Grammys. The Nobel is a nice plum, but it doesn't elevate him much more than he already was.

Long overdue: "Brownsville Girl" (his "greatest most ridiculous epic") was released over thirty years ago.

"...even the swap meets around here are gettin' pretty corrupt..."

Edited to add: a bit ironic considering Dylan's on tour doing mostly covers of Frank Sinatra's 1950s catalog.

I think that's the perfect, succinct description of why he deserves the award.

You should actually listen to the song if <toke> is your take away.

The way this year has been going, I'm wondering how many newspaper editors initially went for the obituaries when they saw Bob Dylan's name pop up in the feed? :D

There are people on this website with very poor reading comprehension. Occasionally, I find myself wondering if they can read at all.

Sara Danius, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, likened Dylan's work and his literary merits to those of the earliest Western poets.

"If you look back, far back … you discover Homer and Sappho," Danius said. "And they wrote poetic texts that were meant to be listened to, they were to meant to be performed, often with instruments."

"But we still read Homer and Sappho and enjoy it," she said. "It's the same way with Bob Dylan."

"He can be read and should be read, and is a great poet in the English tradition"
