Ok, I need someone who knows anything about boats.

Lemme explain what I need.

I either need a website where i can easily look this up (kelly blue book was a bust, they don't go back this far) or someone who can tell me an approximate value.

Ok, we have an estate that's really messy, but one of the main issues is a boat.

The son says the dad helped him buy it, it's his boat he paid his dad back for helping him get the boat. The mother says the son NEVER paid anything for the boat and the boat belongs to her. She wants it sold and the profits to go "to the estate" to be divided. The son just wants his boat.

Ok, we need to find the value of said boat.

According to the registration (the only info I have on the boat) is that it is a 1988 Century. The motor is a Mercruiser 260. It's 23'

According to the son, it's in horrible condition because no one has been allowed to touch the boat until they come to an agreement and it's been sitting in "the yard" (I don't know what that means) since about '01.

I tried to look it up for several hours but to no avail. Help!

First, Century Boats is a company owned by Yamaha. In 1988 I do not believe they made a 21 foot boat. The largest boat the made was an 18 foot competition ski boat.

Second, "In the yard" meas the boat is damaged and sitting in a boat yard deteriorating and/or waiting for needed repairs to make it sea-worthy.

Third, the value of any boat is determined by they year is was manufactured, the condition of the boat and the location. For instance, a 21 foot ski boat is worth far more in any condition in South Florida than it is in Colorado.

Lastly, if the boat is in poor condition, the value is most likely minimal and equal only to the salvage value of the hull. A 21 foot boat would be maybe $1000, regardless of the original purchase price.

Now ask me a question about sailboats and I'll give you a difinitive answer. ;)

I'd start here: http://www.centuryboats.com/ If the regisration has a serial number, the contact informaion there should get you an original MSRP and model informaion

A google search for "century boats" turned up that manufacurers site and dozens of clubs and used boat dealers -- a random check shows various 20' -25' Century boats with prices from $20,000 to $70,000.

Thank you that's extremely helpful. I still need to find something I can refer to. We go to mediation Tuesday.

What I'm concerned about now, is that fact The information I have on the boat rests on this registration paper dated for 2002. It's where I got the size.

And no repairs of any sort have been made on this boat in about 6 years. I went ahead and told the lawyer it may be only worth about $1,000 and he told me to find something as offically stating that as possible.

Wow thank you. i couldn't even find that website when i went looking.

The son says he paid about $25,000 for it initially. I'll do the serial #'s :)

Unfortunately, the only real way to get an actual value is to hire a licensed appraiser.

Good point. But finding and scheduling a licensed appraiser by tuesday is going to be difficult.

Finding the model and comparable boats for sale will only produce a "maximum" value range for the boat.

The devil is in the details of the actual boat -- a thousand could be over-pricing it if the condition is really bad. The time it has spent without maintenance is probably going to cut the value by at least half the "comparable boats" price.

I would like to get it appraised physically instead of doing guessing and leg work. I'm not sure why we aren't able to do it. I know the mother has the boat somewhere, and that the son hasn't been able to acess it since his father died in '00 or '01. (I think his father was storing it for him)

I did manage to find a NADA price guide. I wish if anything I could physically look at the boat and get what condition it really is in, but all I have is the last registration certificate. (dated 2002)

As I look at the "Acessory" options (do you have this?)... i find my self about to die laughing:

Bar / Console Dishwasher
Fish Box - Insulated 10 cu. ft. Ice Maker 20 lbs. Per Day
Microwave Oven Pressure Water System
Range - C.N.G. Range - Electric
Refrigerator - AC/DC - 6 cu. ft. Refrigerator / Freezer 10 cu. ft.
Refrigerator / Ice Maker Combo Trash Compactor
Washer / Dryer Combo Water Heater - 6 Gallon

if I could get a boat with these acessories... I've move out of my house o.0;;;

I think the Ice Maker Combo Trash Compactor may decrease the value of the boat.
