" Well, I may be way off base here but I'm going to take a wild guess and call it like this. Your sire is/was an ex-something, boyfriend, one night stand or something to that extent. It was amazing but eventually burned out, leaving you alone but not unhappy about the fact. You live recklessly because your powers allow you to feel above it all but it is a controlled recklessness. You drink, you probably smoke and you throughly enjoy the hunt and kill but never pick easy prey. "

All this said as he indeed followed suit into the dive bar they had arrived at, wondering if such a shit hole really could have good tequila. A pool table, probably, good tequila, not so much but then again, James was rather skeptical in general. They made their way to a pair of stools and sat down, James ordering them a round of shots and turning his attention back to her.

" Most importantly about my read, you think I'm cute but extremely brash and a bit cocky for my own good. You'd be right about all that but trust me, for as much smoke and mirrors as there is to me, I'm really rather nice. Scouts honor that I only Fuck, Kill and Eat those I really like. "

With that sentence, he raised his shot glass to her in a toast and flashed his easy grin to her.

"To new friends and dive bars!"

Kiana simply smirked and claimed a bar stool while he was talking. He was partly right about her but there was no need to tell him which parts were wrong just yet. His comments about her thinking he was cute drew a low chuckle but again she didn't say anything. He was right about that, she did think he was cute though his brashness was a bit offputting as well.

When he ordered their shots she caught the bartenders eye and gave him a slow grin; he grinned back and didn't reach behind the bar at all but under it where Kiana knew he kept the good liquor that only regulars got.

"To new friends and dive bars!"

Kiana laughed and raised her own shot glass, "To new friends certainly but Rauol's is no dive. It's a gem...if you know what you're looking at."

Downing her shot she slammed the glass down on the bar drawing a laugh from the bartender who she shot another wide grin, this one showing her teeth. It was something the man had obviously seen before because he didn't even flinch at the sight of those long canines.

"You need the pool key tonight Miss Kiana?" the man behind the bar asked with both obvious respect and familiarity.

"Yes please Jimmy and keep the shots coming for my friend and I please...on my tab."

"Of course," Jimmy said and tossed her the key to the pool table so they wouldn't have to pay for their games.

"C'mon," she said to Jame and slipped from her stool heading toward the back of the bar.

From the outside it looked like a dive but if you really looked at the inside it became clear that the place did well. Everything was in good repair and well kept. It was clean and not only did their shoes, not once, stick to the floor but the solid oak flooring gleamed having obviously been recently polished. It was dim and smokey like many bars but the quality of the furnishings would have been more suited to a little club on the upper east side than in the neightborhood it sat in.

Crossing the bar everyone greeted Kiana by name including a few of the other regular customers who raised their glasses to her in greeting. Reaching the pool table she turned the key in it and smiled as the pool balls dropped out for them to rack. Doing just that she glanced up at James with a small grin wondering how what he was seeing scewed his read of her.

"I'm Rayne, and looks like I'm a friend. Mind if i call you Max, otherwise it becomes a mouthful"

Good, indeed good. She was a Vassal, another follower of the Council. Maxi grinned at her comment. Many people before her made the same each time they heard his name. He was proud of his name, a lineage of honor and aristocracy behind the veil of undeath.

"Well, Max is fine. But please, do call me Maxi. It has been my God-given name since my birth and rebirth. Only angered people call my full name."

Maxi's eyes glinted with a mysterious tint, letting them fall all over Rayne's features. She had been the first Vassal he met in several days. Quite a relief actually, that meant he did not have to fight. Of course, a good fight was necessary at times, but not alway. He extended his hand, offering a gentle handshake to Rayne.

"Rayne it is? Pleasure to meet you."

A low chuckle escaped him, James indeed know when he had been bested and this frankly was a world class case. The tequila was excellent, the bar was infact gorgeous and Kiana seemed to have essentially the whole place wrapped around her little finger. A gentle shake of his head as he watched her rack em up, admiring the ease and grace of her movements.

" Now, I've been schooled before but man, this is probably the best in the last 25 years plus. You know everybody, ya got the private booze, the table keys, polished hardwood floors, everything. I hate to admit it but I am throughly impressed my dear mysterious date. But it seem's a little unfair I know so little about you so here is a wager, we share a bit of information for every ball sunk by our opponent. A little give and take unless you know, on top of everything else your a pool hustler. "

He grabbed 2 sticks off the rack and walked back towards her, one stick extended towards her. He liked her, she was saucy and vastly slicker then James had originally anticipated, a mistake he wouldn't make again. This was the kind of woman James dreamed of frankly, all piss and vinger with a very sensual body and attitude.

" Your break, I'll grab us another round. Please try not to get an 8 on the break, that just wouldn't be very sporting of you. "

With that, a wink and a turn on his heel, heading towards the bar to grab a fresh round and hearing a loud, satisfying crack of the balls along with a plunk or two. Well, if that sound was any indicator, James was about to be enrolled in school for the second time today. It was time for him to get his game face on, for both the game and her in general. This wasn't his typical type of woman, oh no, this was the kind that was going to make him put in some work.

Shaking his hand I smiled "Well nice to meet you to Maxi" It was good to know being new in town I'd not have to pick a fight, it seemed as though thats all i had been doing in the other towns.
"Maxi, would you like to join me for a drink?" I gestured to the barman.

Maxi smiled, bowing his head slightly, showing off his good manners. He never expected things to be so easy. And perhaps, things would stay easy. Maximilian did not mind a fight and a bite when time called for it, but no action was just as good. He grinned in such way, almost enough to answer her question.

"It would be an honor to drink with such fine company." His speech befitted a cotton-farmer's son, but his life had been so long gone. He never really thought back to his living time, it did not matter. Maxi was thankful to the vampire who had bitten him. A whole new "live" he was given. A whole new meaning.

Snapping out of his thoughts, Maximilian took his drink and hefted his glass to Rayne's.

"To a, hopefully, good friendship."

Diana stared at him for while.

"I don't think that it's racist if I don't want to date a vampire..." She said slowly. It wasn't that she didn't want to go out with John it was just that... well, he was a dead guy...

"I'm a hunter..." she said after a moment. "I hunt vampires... I haven't found too many yet but I was basically in that bar because I got a tip from a couple of punk kids..." She said sounding frustrated.

She stood up and looked down at him. God she was confused now. How was she supposed to act now that there was this guy, this handsome guy, that wanted to date her and she was finding out that he was dead....

"Alrighty then," I say, quite uneasily. "I guess this ISN'T a date."

I look around, wondering if anyone heard us. I turn back to Diana and motion for her to sit back down.

"Why don't you have a seat, and we can talk about something we have in common -- like hunting vampires," I say, thinking that gaining a potential ally or hunting partner might be worth the risk. "Here's what I propose: I'll tell you everything you might need and want to know about myself, and you do the same for me. At the end of the evening, we can both decide if we want to hunt each other or help each other. And to be honest with you, I think the decision will be yours to make, because I think I already made mine."

She felt a little bad about having hurt his feelings but she felt that it was justified. But then he was motioning for her to return to her seat. She did so without hesitating. He wasn't controlling her mind, that much she knew, but she did want to keep talking.

And his proposition turned out to be worth hearing.

Her eyebrow rose and she quietly looked to the ceiling as if in deep thought. there was that part of her, that tiny little voice, telling her that this was a bad idea... but she decided to stay despite herself. She opened her big brown eyes, peering at him just over her glasses and sighed as if she was very tired.

"Alright... We'll talk... But only because you made such an impression earlier," she said with the barest hint of flirtation in her voice. "And this could be a date," she corrected but didn't make much more of an attempt to convince him otherwise.

"...A little give and take unless you know, on top of everything else your a pool hustler."

Kiana just gave him a small non-commital smile and finished racking the pool balls. She wasn't actually a pool hustler but she did play fairly well but she wasn't above trying to put him off his game by making him think she was better than she was.

" Your break, I'll grab us another round. Please try not to get an 8 on the break, that just wouldn't be very sporting of you. "

She laughed when he handed her a pool cue and while he was at the bar she slid it back into it's place on the wall. She was picky about the sticks she used and only when she found one weighted the way she liked she she saunter back to the table and a very satisfying break. She knew there wasn't enough noise int he place for him not to have heard the balls falling into the pockets but he did miss the small smirk that curved her lips when she double checked and found them both solids.

Noting he was on his way back to the table she stood back and waited for him not wanting him to have any excuse to call foul on her later and claim she cheated him.

"Two balls, two pieces of information," she said with a satisfied grin.

"Good to see you're willing to talk, at least," I say with a smile that doesn't match my sigh of resignation. "Well, since it was my idea, I guess I best start first..."

I speak for several minutes, giving Diana a brief synopsis of my life -- and undeath. I tell her about my struggle to become a lawyer, and how I realized my childhood dream only for it to be cut short after a few months when a vampire turned me into one of them. I spend a lot of time describing my thought process shortly afterwards, and how I came to my decision to use my "current situation" to help further my original goals -- to punish evil and protect the innocent -- instead of becoming a monster that preyed upon the weak and innocent.

"So, that's my story," I say afterwards, "Any questions?"

As he made his way back to the table, drinks in hand, he saw the satisfied grin a half second before the comment from her. A survey of the table showed that the 2 she spoke of were solids and she looked mightly pleased with that fact. A slight nod of concession as he handed her the drink, shaking his head ever so slightly.

" This is going to be a long night of getting my ass whooped, I can feel it. But then again, I cut the deal so I'm going to abide by it. Ok, two peices of information for you, hrm, what's juicy and interesting about myself. "

A quick swallow of his drink and he watched her move ever so lithely around the table, no wasted effort in motion. James licked his lips unconciously, always appreciative of a fine female form and then the proverbial bulb went on, two rather interesting informational nuggets!

" Well, I've lived in beautiful NYC my whole life and un-death with a loft in downtown Manhattan my residency. The loft came well after my transition, a nice perk of being a gambler, I had money to spend. Secondly, the only thing I've ever loved was a cat I had for about 13 years and I named him Vlad The Impaler. I lust after women, I throughly enjoy hunting, I'm addicted to gambling but I've never actually loved anything but that cat. "

Smiling I lifted my glass in a salute. drinking it in a gulp, I said "I'm getting restless in here, mind if we go elsewhere?"

Kiana paused in lining up her next shot and simply shook her head. Granted she didn't think he was quite as old as she was but he was certainly older than most humans managed to live to and to have only ever loved a cat??? Kiana couldn't fathom it.

"That's actually rather...well it's rather sad in my opinion," she admitted but gave a small shrug of her shoulders and went back to lining up her shot. He was obviously content with it so there was no need to waste pity on him even if she thought he deserved it.

The shot she wanted was a rather difficult one and she didn't angle it quite right so she stepped back fromt he table and made a sweeping gesture with her arm to indicate the table was his. While he was lining up his own shot she downed the tequila he'd brought her and caught the waitress eye indicating she'd like a beer as well.

Diana sat back and listened. He used to be a lawyer, how interesting. He seemed genuine with his intentions, that was for sure but could she really trust someone that fed off of others? She sighed softly to herself and decided that she might as well ask him everything that was running through her brain. "How many years have you been dead?" She asked looking somewhat sedated. Honestly she never thought that she would have met one.

"Well... Everything started back when I was just a girl..." She said. Diana explained the death of her mother and the baseball bat fight. Of course now she knew that that vampire must not have cared about her because he let her hit him with a bat several times and he didn't fight back. She moved on to how she began hunting and had been looking for that one vampire.

"And then I found my way into a bar where a handsome vampire spilt my drink...." She said. "And you know the rest."

OOC: My character looks like me.

"I died in 1995, sometime before my 30th birthday," I reply, somewhat sadly. "I didn't ask for this, but I now believe that everything happens for a reason."

I listen intently to Diana's tale of woe and vengeance.

"I am so very sorry to hear about your loss. If you are open to the idea, I will help you find your vampire," I say, thoughtfully. "You might need my help, and I could certainly use yours. If we work together, we might achieve our goals sooner and easier."

I motion for the waitress to bring the check, and then pay for it while I wait a few moments to let my proposal sink in.

"What say you? Do we leave this diner as partners and allies, or do you wish to destroy me, too?"

She was listening intently to him. What he said made sense. She was having a very difficult time finding vampires on her own and... and she didn't know how to go about finding them without them finding her first. It was a real problem. But now she was starting to see that with him working with her she would at least have a shot.

She made up her mind.

Diana stood up and started to walk away... without saying a word. But then she stopped and looked back at him. "Are you going to give me a ride or not partner?" She asked.

Maximilian gave her a smile back, following her example as he downed his drink in one go. He let the soft touch of alcohol flame his throat, closing his eyes for a moment. When he reopened them, Maxi stared almost intensely in Rayne's eyes.

"If that is your wish, who am I then to do otherwise?" He grinned, offering his hand to Rayne, leading her away from the crowds towards the door. Indeed, this place was too loud and full. It simply was not nice to stay, all these... Licents. They were nothing more than bloodsucking maggots. In time Maxi would hunt them down, slaughter them.

Alas, all in due time he thought. There was a more important matter right now. That being Rayne...

I get up and open the diner door for her as we walk out to the car, then open the car door for Diana.

"So, do you have any leads on your target vampire?"

"I don't know where to go. Have you already eaten?" She decided that 'feeding' was just too much for her to handle at the moment.

She rolled her eyes at the 'Miss Daisy' referance. She could always shoot him if he didn't know when to stop she thought to herself before laughing just a little bit. She quietly slid into the car and fastened her seatbelt just waiting to get going.

"No leads..." She said looking a little distressed. It's been almost eleven years... He could be anywhere if you really think about it..." She said.

"Coming to think of it, I am getting a bit hungry," I reply. "I shoulda ordered some huevos rancheros while we were at the diner... Hmmm... It's decided then -- we're going to my place. We can talk -- and more importantly, eat -- when we get there."

I pull out of the parking lot and start driving.

"Oh, and by the way, I eat normal food, for the most part. I guess I'm special that way. I only drain those I hunt: you know, bad guys and bad vampires, and such. But even then, I figure that if I'm gonna kill someone, I might as well take their blood, since I am, after all, a vampire and I don't believe in wasting things. It's like recycling, you know?"

She didn't see it like that... Well, she kind of could but it was still pretty weird that was for sure. She nodded, deciding it would be better to just go along with it. Maybe it would make more sense if she was in his shoes... probably. But right now she had a limited prospective of it and she wasn't about to go and watch him feed on some bad guy to decide if he was really enjoying it or simply not being wasteful.

She was lost when he said he wanted to drink from her. "Woah... I don't know if drinking my blood will really help..." She said sounding more than a little paranoid. Sure, he could tell her anything that he wanted to to get her to offer up her neck. She was unconsciously rubbing her neck. "Can't you just read my mind...?"

Well, yeah, but how am I supposed to cop a feel if I just read your mind?" I say, somewhat frustrated. "I mean, seriously, how impersonal would that be?"

I pull into my driveway and park the car.

"You're not some kind of prude, are you?" I say, my right eyebrow raised in question. "I mean, I can accept that you're bigoted towards the living-challenged and all, but if you've got issues with adult intimacy, just tell me now so I can quit sexually harassing you. OK?"

I get out and trot over to her side to open the door for her.

"Don't worry, I've already resigned myself to the fact that I'm not getting lucky tonight," I say, grinning at her in my best harmless boy manner. "Let's just go inside so I can feed you properly and we can plan some strategy. Oh, and bring your knife, unless you don't mind having it stolen out of my car. This neighborhood isn't that great, and we all know that car alarms are useless and annoying -- even if I could afford one..."

"I'm not a prude!" She snapped. Sure, he was a funny guy but asking her if she was a prude was just a little out there right? She frowned at him but she really didn't care and found her frown quickly and quietly forgotten as he continued to speak. She shook her head at his resignation.

"I mean really..." She said getting out of the car and snatching up her knife. "You give up far too easily.... The living you was totally going to get some tonight.... Who says the dead one can't too... God that sounded so weird," she laughed before following him in.

"I just... I just don't know if I want anyone biting me just yet alright?" She asked.

Grinning, I walked out into the night, the air swirling round us. Grinning back at Maxi, I too wasnt happy as there were way too many lincents in this club. "Any suggestions?" I asked, "I'm new to town and well have not a clue where to go what to do, want to be my guide?"

Still laughing, I wink at her and lead her inside. My place is small, with a single bedroom and loft, with spartan furnishings and hospital standard cleanliness.

"Well, this is home for me," I say as we enter. "Sorry about the complete lack of furniture down on this floor. I use the entire first floor as a martial arts training room, so I took out all the furniture and gave it to Goodwill. Would you care to head upstairs to the loft? I have a futon that I can fold into a couch up there... Please feel at home, make yourself comfortable, and may I get you something refreshing -- coffee, tea, me?"

I flash her my cheesiest Cheshire cat grin.
