In reality it's a term used to degrade women in most cases...basically akin to calling gays/lesbians fags. There are probably instances of slut being used in a positive light, perhaps between two lovers who are actually comfortable with each other and are playing around, but in the public sphere it's almost always negative. There is no similar term that carries such a connotation for hetrosexual men.
