Everyone wants to reopen the economy, but the main reason we can't
is because Trump, in his incompetence and malice, has persistently
refused to take steps to institute the widespread testing that's necessary

In a series of tweets on Saturday morning, Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman lambasted Donald Trump for his inability to make and stick to any plans to stem the coronavirus pandemic and the ensuing economic collapse of the country, calling the president and Republicans “quitters.”

Responding to a post from Andy Slavitt, who ran the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for former President Barack Obama, Krugman went on a tweetstorm questioning the president’s “insecurity” issues.

“We are ruled by quitters. As Andy Slavitt pointed out a few days ago, the US finally started to implement a real strategy to cope with Covid-19 — then Republicans just gave up,” he tweeted before adding, “To the extent that there’s a coherent strategy here, it is to rely on a spontaneous economic rebound that will take place even though the coronavirus isn’t remotely contained.”

The economist added, “This is partly about ideology, but I also think it reflects Trump’s deep psychological insecurity (which is reflected more broadly in his presidency). All the evidence suggests that he has no faith in his own ability to make actual policy.’

Stoney Apologizes for Tear Gas, Agrees to March Today

June 2, 2020

After Richmond police fired tear gas into a group of peaceful protesters on Monday night
Mayor Levar Stoney asked for the community to come to City Hall on Tuesday so he could
apologize. A large crowd took him up on it.

Richmond mayor joins protesters, apologizes after city police gassed a peaceful demonstration

June 2, 2020

At the Lee statue Tuesday night, Stoney was lost in the crowd of thousands.
“Where is Stoney?” some chanted in a singsong taunt, thinking the mayor was
a no-show. Then a man with a bullhorn announced that Stoney was there and
asked whether they wanted to hear from him. The response was a mix of shouting
that the mayor took as a yes, or a maybe. He stepped up to the foot of the monument
and took the bullhorn.

He told the crowd that he would support a citizens review board for police.
He said he had called the city prosecutor to urge her to drop charges filed
against hundreds of protesters but cautioned that prosecution is not his call.

As Stoney started to leave a little after 7 p.m., some booed him.

“I can’t stay past 8 o’clock,” he said. “You know that, right?

But some in the crowd of thousands seemed unaware of his presence.
“Where is Stoney?” they continued to chant. Some of those up close
shouted at him.

Stoney had linked arms along the way with Del. Lamont Bagby (D-Henrico),
head of the Legislative Black Caucus. Other elected officials in the crowd included
state Sens. Jennifer L. McClellan and Ghazala F. Hashmi, both Richmond Democrats.

Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax (D) also appeared with marchers, saying he wanted to
show solidarity after the “abhorrent” use of tear gas on peaceful protesters.

Esper, on thin ice with the White House, reverses decision on troop deployments

June3, 2020

Defense Secretary Mark Esper abruptly reversed a decision to order active-duty troops
home from the national capital region on Wednesday

Earlier in the day, Esper ordered 200 active-duty soldiers from the 82nd Airborne's
immediate response force — brought to the national capital region to deal with unrest
if needed — to return to their home base after two days of more peaceful demonstrations
in D.C.

But Esper abruptly overturned the decision just hours later, after a meeting at the
White House and other internal Pentagon discussions- according to The Associated Press.

People call for Starbucks boycott after staff told not to wear Black Lives Matter pins, T-shirts

June 11, 2020

BuzzFeed reports that Starbucks told employees not to wear items of clothing,
like pins or T-shirts, that endorse the Black Lives Matter movement.

According to the report, in a memo to employees, Starbucks management said
Black Lives Matter attire would be prohibited though buttons and attire in support
of marriage equality and LGBTQ rights are permitted. The company pointed to
a dress code policy that prohibits the wearing of buttons or pins that
“advocate a political, religious or personal issue.”

On social media, some compared the guidance issued to employees with the company’s
June 4 statement in support of Black Lives Matter.

“Black lives matter,” Starbucks tweeted at the time.
“We are committed to being a part of change.”

House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) sets June 26 date for historic House vote

The statehood bill, introduced by Norton, would shrink the seat of the federal government

State of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth.

A Shrine's Touchstone Is Gone Into Storage

Christopher McCandless died in 1992 The bus he sheltered in, has been moved.

The 1940s-era bus — Fairbanks city bus 142 — was hauled to the spot by Yutan Construction
Co. as a shelter for employees during a pioneer road construction project. It was abandoned
when the project was completed in 1961, according to the state.

It soon became a destination for hikers, Walker said. But “its usefulness as a shelter
had pretty much gone by as it was really dilapidated and in bad shape,” he said.

The bus, where McCandless stayed alone for more than 100 days until his death,
was a magnet for travelers from around the world with differing levels of outdoor
skill. The “Into the Wild” book has been translated into 30 languages.

The bus will remain in storage at a secure location, and the state is considering options
for its permanent placement, Natural Resources Commissioner Corri Feige said.

Mike Pence Proves He's As Just As Dangerous To America's Health As Trump

https://crooksandliars.com/2020/06/mike-pence-proves-hes-just-dangerous

The White House coronavirus task force held its first briefing in two months, yesterday,
and the whole tired affair was summed up nicely by Esquire’s Charlie Pierce here:

The White House Task Force on the coronavirus pandemic re-emerged from its
hyperbaric chamber and met the press again on Friday morning. If you watched
the whole thing, you might have noticed that none of them were adhering to CDC
guidelines, including wearing masks, and that HHS Secretary Alex Azar tried a little
of the old okey-doke involving the Ebola outbreak in the Congo, and that Dr. Anthony
Fauci now sounds like a man who has been hauling a barge through the Erie Canal.
But all you really needed to see was the last question and the last answer.

Paula Reid of CBS asked this question of the Poser-in-Chief regarding the superspreader
events in which his re-election campaign is now engaged. […]

You could see Pence visibly reach the absolute frontier limits of his intellect
in trying to craft an answer that was not admitting that Reid was absolutely right,
and that also would keep Pence from offending the angry toddler for whom he works.

Philippines in Hot Seat at UN Rights Council

Government’s Announced Review Panel for ‘Drug War’ Killings a Ruse

June 30, 2020

The Philippines came under scrutiny when the United Nations Human Rights Council
convened in Geneva on Tuesday. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michele
Bachelet gave the stark findings of her office’s report on the Philippines, which the
council requested last year. She described widespread abuses against drug suspects,
political activists, indigenous peoples, and journalists, among others.

During the session, several countries echoed the report’s findings and called for accountability.

Predictably, China and other countries close to Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte rejected
he report, saying only “constructive dialogue” can address human rights issues in the country.

At a time when the Philippines needs a serious impartial investigation into “drug war”
killings, the panel is nothing more than a ruse to shield the country from international
scrutiny. The International Criminal Court could open an investigation into crimes
against humanity committed up to March 17, 2019, the date when the Philippines’
withdrawal from the court took effect. It’s also a naked attempt to discourage the
Human Rights Council from starting an independent, international investigation
into the “drug war” killings and related violations as recommended by the UN
high commissioner and 23 UN human rights experts.

Countries at the Human Rights Council should not be fooled.

Thank you, Richard Davis, Director of the clinical microbiology laboratory
at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, Washington

Seeing a film about how far dropets travel from a sneeze, convinced me that
wearing a mask was important. (Far, fast, wide, and so many droplets. eek)

(If that many bacteria were given a chance to make their presence known in the agar
gel, it does give the brain an alert to start imagining how many coronavirus are contained
in each cough, each sneeze, each shout.)

Dr Richard Davis took to Twitter on June 27 to post a photo of two rows of agar culture
plates, explaining that he’d ‘sneezed, sang, talked and coughed’ on one row of plates while
wearing a surgical face mask. He did the same to the other row without wearing a mask.

“Two simple demos: First, I sneezed, sang, talked & coughed toward an agar culture plate
with or without a mask. Bacteria colonies show where droplets landed. A mask blocks
virtually all of them,” he added.

Dr Davis’s graphic depiction of the effectiveness of face coverings has clearly struck
a chord with social media users and his tweet has gone viral — if you’ll pardon the pun —
with almost 200k retweets and over 320k likes.

6 Jul 2020

Donald Trump announced that he plans to nominate William Perry Pendley
to lead the Bureau of Land Management. That may not sound like big news,
but it is.

Pendley is linked to two little-known but very dangerous political movements:
the so-called Wise Use movement and the anti-government extremists sometimes
called constitutionalists or sovereign citizens.

Wise Use advocates, who are fiercely opposed to almost any environmental
protection laws, have long had exceptional access to the Trump administration.

The movement wants to privatize basically all public land, so that it can be used
“wisely” by big business – especially the agricultural, fossil fuel and logging
industries, which are also the movement’s biggest donors

Although Pendley has been acting director of the Bureau of Land Management
since last July, his official nomination will give him troubling new authority and
political clout.

Just last week, the Bureau of Land Management proposed opening millions of acres
in rural Alaska for oil and gas leasing.
