Blasphemy!!

If you think that's blasphemous- you should look up some information on the god Mithras. He was a god in Tarsus where Saul/Paul was from (anyone remember him, he wrote the majority of the books in the new testimant) before his 'conversion.' The parralels are astounding.

One has to wonder if Christianity converted Saul or if Saul converted Christianity???

On a more serious side, don't you think Christianity is really just a cult of the Christ?

Not making waves, just curious.

Seems like it sometimes.

I mean, come on, how do we know it ISN'T a cult?

It would seem to be so, after Christ died, his followers went underground...somewhere an organized religion grew.

Technically, that's how it started out until Constatine made it a mandatory empire religion and began enforcing it bloodily. That doesn't lessen it or make it "bad". There are some good things in Christianity if you follow the parts that are truly "of Christ" instead of one of the nameless writers of the OT like whatever sadist wrote Leviticus or Paul of Romans and Corinthians fame.

Personally I've liked these joke religious ones from Simon Travalgia (of Bastard Operator from Hell fame):

Installing the 48666 Chip
Adult Books
Numbers 2-4 of this series

No, the cult of Paul.

The cult of Christ would be much more 'pagan.'

There is nothing negative meant by me with the use of the term 'cult' either btw.

Here's a link about the Mithras thing:

******edited to add: here is a better link for what I was talking about:

No, because they're winning. If they were losing, they'd be a cult. Like the Miami Dolphins.

well yeah sure Jesus followers went underground-their leader was just nailed to a big bleedin' cross and killed in a rather not nice way. I don't think the world was looking fondly on the followers of Jesus right at that moment. They feared for their lives.

Then at passover the popped out again, the whole speaking in tongues malarky where they spoke to 1000's of people in for the holidays as it were.

I guess it depends what you mean by cult, looking for a dictionary definition I found these:

adherents of an exclusive system of religious beliefs and practices. (I would say some churches come under this but not christianity per se...as christianity isn't exclusive...well inless it's like the new Marks and Spencer Advertising slogan "exclusive for everyone")

And then I found this too
An interest followed with exaggerated zeal. (Again some churches fall into this but christianity is about true emotions and feelings, not exagerations...least thats how I see it)

And then

a system of religious beliefs and rituals.( so ok i might just give it you on that definition*L*)

Ok so I went all serious and I apologise if I've actually hijacked this thread -just you know I feel kinda strongly on this kind of thing :)

As for Paul...well he was a big "star" back then. did alot of writing, said alot of stuff. he was still a man. The problems arise when people see the words of Paul as unquestionable, and take the fact he lived a fair few centuries ago in a different culture out of the picture *L*

EL, I love you, and I love God and all, but religion confuses and annoys the hell out of me and I think lots of it is bullshit, at least according to how the events of my life got churned out. I've had friends murder each other and then commit suicide, parents who treat their children like prisoners and slaves, teachers who don't give a good goddamn, lovers who break hearts senselessly, and mostly, listening to religious zealots at the various churches I was forced to attend talk about the sins of divorce and masturbation.

At this point, I'm not too good with organized religion, and anything I see or read about it pisses me off just a little.

Sorry guys,
:rose:

Religion isn't my thing either - I hate religion. religion has totally nothing to do with faith in my eyes.

Anyhow...I had a blurt. I sometimes do. This is the one thing that i will jump in and debate about.

No hard feelings at all SIMA :rose: just making my voice heard too :)

Y'know... we'll throw a big shit-storm party over the person who says "gays are misguided". We'll get our feathers ruffled and for-shame-on-them the person who up and calls the War in Iraq an excellent thing.

But I wonder, and candidly, whether anyone concerns themselves with the possibility that they might offend one Christian with the things they say. I wonder where the shit-storm in their defense is, sometimes.

I think the same things too sometimes. I think I posted something along those lines on another thread around here today! Some of what I read this morning in the overnight threads really did upset me.

I guess I'm just soft though.

One of my best friends, the Law Prof, and I spend a lot of time together. We're both Catholic--which isn't a terribly high population in the South. One of our good friends' fiance wants to be Catholic. So, Law-Man has been helping her into it and the like.

She got seriously talked out the other day. Randomly. Just hanging out with some folks and she manages to start talking about the things she's been doing at the Church. Bam. She gets a ten-minute earful about how she's, basically, brain-damaged and participating in the greatest hate-mongering, suffering-causing, travesty to human progress ever.

Horrible, horrible things to say. And it amazes me how "alright" it is for people to say them. They really ought be ashamed of themselves.

No offense to anybody here, but I don't mind the Jesus Dress Up. I really don't. I love God and all, but I can't believe in Jesus, and to me he's just a storybook character, a fairytale man that generations of people created and developed stories out of real people and places. I believe in miracles and angels and God, but I don't accept Jesus as the son of God.

I got a kick out of the Jesus Dress Up. If people are offended by that, I can understand that too. Everyone's driven by their own personal beliefs. Mine just don't happen to be aligned with everyone elses.

Joe... yeah that would drive me mad too. But I guess we kind of sign up to it you know? That whole "Pick up thy cross" thing.

Sima...I didn't even look at it to be honest but it was the reaction of people to the post about the protestors against it that really got to me. There was so much nastiness flying in those words.

I respect you and your beliefs Sima...I just wish some people, and I don't mean you, would respect mine as much too you know?

There is alot of proof that Jesus lived. It is then a faith thing, a matter of belief as to wether you think he was the Son of God or not. And there we have free will to decide. Thats kinda the point.

:)
