Do you know the feeling of seeing someone grip their purse when they see you coming? Or walking in the mall with friends and seeing people cross to the other side just so they don’t walk past you? How about getting on a hotel elevator and everyone is so afraid that they move their backs to the wall? Or you and a older white woman being the last ones to get off the elevator and she’s frightened to the point that you can actually see her shake? How about being on vacation and get told that you can’t come in the club with your because they don’t know if it’s gang related or not? Then getting in the club and seeing someone else wearing the same team hat that they wasn’t sure if it’s gang related. Well these are some of my experiences. If you can relate to them and you have pale white skin then it isn’t because of the color of my skin that I went through these experiences. How about going out to dinner and being brought the bill before your food is even on the table? I remember going to a fancy restaurant for one of my friends birthday. It was like maybe 10 to 15 of us. The look on the people faces when we entered made me feel like I didn’t belong there. The discomfort in them was like we was a bunch of aliens walking in or something. I will never forget it. While we was eating a guy approached us telling us they he was a big Giants fan and was wondering do any of us play for the Giants, like the only way we can afford to be there dressed how we was dressed is if we played sports or was a rapper or something like that. Some people think white privilege is having something I cannot achieve which means white privilege doesn’t exist. But it’s the small things like being privileged enough to go in any store and not being followed like you’re going to steal. Or being able to go anywhere in this country without making people feel uncomfortable. Nuff said
