Black Friday

My Christmas shopping is about 95% done and about 50% wrapped. But I wouldn't miss tomorrow shopping for anything except really bad weather. It is tradition! Tomorrow I'll be picking up my mom, driving almost two hours to our favorite mall, having lunch, shopping for a couple hours, and driving back. A true girls' day out. Maybe I'll buy some stuff (usually for me) and maybe not. It's the time spent with mom that is important. The rest of the female relatives chickened out this year so it's just us.

I worked as a cashier for a combination grocery/department store.

The day after Thanksgiving usually wasn't any busier than the days leading up to it.

Right before Y2K was a motherfucker, though.

I'm one of those rarities who despise shopping, but every year I trudge out and go on Black Friday. I just hate doing it alone, so I'm currently in the process of whinning *goddess*emi* into going with me.

My alarm clock is set for 4am

My step Mom needs me to take her to a Xmas sale that starts at 6am. What the hell was I thinking when I said, "Sure. I'll be glad to take you?" Ugh!

I do most of my shopping on the internet now.

The first time I gave it a go was last Christmas and I was amazed at the simplicity and speed of it all.

Crowds are definitely a thing of my past...

I'm back from two stores. I bought two books for the endless standing-in-line process and myself a new necklace. Everything else was things my mother and sister needed for their Christmas shopping.


I'll do mine Dec 21st. Our family is celebrating Dec 22 since my mother will be working both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day this year.

I'm going to weigh in here with my viewpoint.

I've been through more than a few Black Fridays in my retail career, I don't recall who it was in another post that said everyone should have to work retail on that day at least once in their life, THANK YOU!
I have been saying that for years.

It's fucking true that they turn into animals...sheer beasts.

Let me share with you the items that helped me make it through.

Well I got up at 4am and left for the local Super Walmart. MY stepmom and I were there at 5:15 am. We staked out the pallet of bikes along with a few other people.

There were four people at the four corners of the pallet and my step mom was one. (We had to wait until 6am to remove any of the bikes). All four had everything plotted out. One would push a box to my bonusmom and myself. We'ld load up and push a box to the other lady there and then tip the pallet so the other bike would basically fall into the other guys buggy. Jesus I didn't know this stuff could get that complicated! We got our bikes and got out of there. We were only slowed down by the throng of people and buggies in the toy department. The parking lot was still pretty empty when we left (I guess everyone was in the toy dept). By the time we unloaded the bikes and I drove past my local Super Walmart the parking lot was PACKED!

People are nuts for a good buy but I guess I can understand since I'm so broke.

Stayed up and just wasn't in the mood to deal with the rudeness today afterall.

I'm going to stay in my house warm and safe and check out online shopping to avoid being stampeded by overzealous shoppers armed with a metal buggy, hyped up on bargains.

Quite frankly, I think everyone should have to work retail during the Christmas season at least one time in their lives.


I feel for those people. I really do. You should to.

I've lived through more Black Fridays than I care to remember (including today), and I've reached the point where if you can't behave in my store, be prepared to be told to leave. Scream, and mall security will help you on your way. There are some people I sincerely hope will start shopping the competion.

It was nuts yesterday, literally a half hour of driving around the mall looking for a parking space to start with. Then I had some guy think he was going to back up to get a space where someone was leaving, and he expected ME to back up so he could take it. Ha. I didn't budge and he flipped me the bird before he sped off down the aisle. My mother was amused. So was I. You have to take all the bad behavior in stride and just laugh. Of course, I'm not a clerk in the stores. I can afford to laugh and enjoy myself.

As for actual shopping, I did the vast majority of mine online this year, too. Of course, I do most of my shopping online all year long. It is nice to have free shipping and it all shows up on my front doorstep without me dragging it around a mall first. I bought a few little things at the mall yesterday, but not much. I was there mostly for the festive atmosphere and lunch with mom.
