Bits and pieces

Shatner went on to do a good acting job on Boston Legal.
I suspect by then he was at a point in his life and career where he wanted to actually apply his craft and quit coasting (and he was likely energized by the role).

Are any of these replies talking about building a story as I was?

I'm sorry, but there was a HUGE chunk of context missing from your OP. How much context? Like all of it!

No one expected the nuts and bolts to be literally nuts and bolts... so we had to bear with this somehow.

Are you trying to put a method for making a story together, or making a story together?

Writing exercise: start with bits and pieces, an outline, a few words, ideas. A few characters.

And then introduce the rabid, hungry polar bear that just escaped from the zoo.

Go.
Frank and Jill were walking down the road. It was a crisp Autumn night, stars glittering like a sea of pearls above their heads. Jill leaned her head on-

AAAAHHHHHH!

The bear is here to help drag your story off to a cave to be chewed on while it whimpers for mercy.
2 things.

1. That's exactly how it feels for my reimagining of Ria, and

2. It's snowing here so the possibility of the threat of being eaten by a polar bear that YOU threatened me with a day or so ago seems immanently more realistic

I don't threaten people with the bears! As a seal human being, I know the agonies of bear maulings, and would never inflict that upon another creature.

It's not MY fault they broke containment :cautious:

You manifested it! You said it and 'POOF' now it may happen😱

Still better than those Hawaiian millipedes/ centipedes though

There's a not-insignifcant part of me that hopes Hawaiian centipedes join the rampage with the polar bears.

Real SyFy channel level nonsense going on in that sentence. Very Sharktopus vibes.

How dare you dismiss Sharknado like it never happened! I've never been so offended!

And have you seen those things😲! They're huge and there's usually more than one! Makes my skin crawl

We all know that Sharknado 6 was the only actual event that occurred, the rest were just inventions by bored writers. Stop living in your fantasy-land BS

Which one was the chainsaw? Didn't see it but remember the previews. Anyway. Moving on with life, tomorrow another day.

Peace

My advice: write what you want the way you want. Detailed outline, seat of the pants, it's your choice. In the end, you can only be taught the structure of a story, not how to write it. And I think you already know story structure.

There was an actual sentence formatted as a Question?
No!

For a minute I thought that that was the answer and maybe OP was mad because nobody played along Jeopardy style.

doo dee doo doo, doo dee doo... doo dee doo dee doot! de doot doot doot do...

Now I'm as stuck as ever because what they called the "one valid response" wasn't "phrased in the form of a question" either.

"I'll take Bits and Pieces for a thousand, Alex."

The clue:
A simple outline.

Some words under each section. maybe a paragraph or two. A little background and some narrative.

Then start to expand and fill in, tying sections together with some how and why.

This might take a while and may not ever see the light of submission.

Sure won't be a typical story though.

"What is... writer's block?"
"No, sorry."
"What is... impostor syndrome?"
"Sorry!"
"What is... Ulysses?"
"Correct! It was a trick clue."

"Alex, I'll take the worst jokes for one thousand."

"It's our Daily double, Millie, for two fucking thousand dollars, who is the master of the bad joke?"

"Who is @Britva415?"

"Close, but no cigar, or cash, the correct answer is, @If_Only_. I'm afraid you're in negative territory again, Millie, and with one question left, out of the running for Final Jeopardy. "
