Very common. Not only does the pain feel good, but it is nice to have a reminder. If I won't see a lover for a while I will make sure to give them something to remember me buy. I leave them on the breast beside the nipple.

Ha, that made me laugh can't say that I've ever had someone leave marks for that reason, but the last time I was left with marks/bruises the ones on my inner thigh didn't go until about a fortnight later!
