Bitching about Boston

You know it is cold, when you do not want to take off your bra, when you get home.

Trains, The T, and busses will not be running after midnight. Go home! Or, your hotel. Police will be stopping people, and asking them why the are out on the road.

No tickets, unless you are doing something awful.

No flights will depart from Boston's Logan International Airport after 7 p.m.

2015 Winter Hurricaine

Description below, of the Great White Hurricaine of 1888

55 inches of snow, hurricane force winds, 0f temps fall to -1
(It is happening, to us in 2015!)

For the first time in history the New York Stock Exchange closed

All of the electric lamps were out and no attempt to light the gas lamps was made. Drunken men and men who were simply tired by long and severe struggles in the drifts were stumbled over in every neighborhood. The ambulances were overturned again and again, although some of them had extra horses attached by ropes to the shafts. A ghastly procession of wounded men and women began to file into the wards of the hospitals. Broken skulls, fractured arms, thighs and legs, frozen hands and feet—these were the things that kept the whole corps of every hospital up all night. Men were found bareheaded and insane in the tempest.

A heartrending wail began to go up all over the great city. People were missed and no trace could be found of them. Husbands, fathers, wives, mothers, sons and daughters poured into the police stations haggard, hollow eyed and desperate with fear and anxiety. The Morgue will soon be choked with victims.

Then came the news that none of the Sound steamers had been heard from. It was known that the ocean was beating in with terrific force and many vessels were given up as lost. Crowds of half crazed people haunted the offices of the different lines in the vain search for information.

Much more of the story at this link-

A zillion fairy snowflakes, adds up to knee high piles of snow dust.
The wind has made the highway a place that is filled with snow fog.
Four inches of soft powdery snow falls in one hour.
When you cannot see the Zakim bridge, it is bad news.

Travel ? Stay off the road! Snowfall until Wednesday.

It will stay cold, 15f with high winds adds up to 0f
Less than 1/4 mile visibility. Sudden white-out is dangerous.
More of the same, today and tonight.
Statewide travel ban. MTBA trolleys and trains
will not be on the tracks.

Orders to stay home. Snow day!

Call your drugstore before you walk down to the corner.

Down by the sea, the waves are getting higher.
Will we get 25 foot waves, crashing into the lighthouse ?
Heavy wet snow and sand blown by hurricane force winds
where President Obama had his fun in summer.

Olde Boston has old plumbing. I have to admit that wooden water main pipe that was big enough to stand up in, was a shocker.

Broken water main down at the Financial Center. A frozen lake has taken over the road. Ice skating! Sadly,no. Might have been a sewerage line that broke. blarrghhh

Scraping snow, and throwing salt on my doorstep, over and over, again.
Trying to keep up, because getting surprised by blocked door is an old trick that I will try to thwart.

Why wear a balaclava ? Because choking to death on dry snow is ridiculous, if you do it while making a snow angel.

No jets from Logan, overhead. No droning hum, from cars.

The wind is breathing out, and that is the only sound that is heard.

15f is pleasant, when dressed in warm clothes.

" comparing the difference between multiple mild swats from a riding crop over a long period of time, to being immediately crushed by pile driver."

The blizzard may be over by 8:00 tonight. A few more inches of snow may be added.

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie announced he would be lifting travel ban at midnight Tuesday evening.

Baker is asking for people to be sensible and to use common sense.

Good luck with that, Charlie.

People walked in the middle of the streets during white out conditions.

The walkers never considered that the drivers of the enormous snow plow trucks could not see them because visibility was so poor.

The parking ban in the City of Boston will remain in effect until further notice.

This was a historic storm. Worst storm in January, for Boston, ever.

Cape Cod caught the worst of it. Boston got lucky.

New Hampshire and Maine are still listed under Blizzard Watch.

A winter storm warning remains in effect until 4 a.m. Wednesday for most of the state of New Hampshire.

Wednesday seems to be the day that Maine will be setting the travel bans aside.

The snow, heavy winds and -31f temperatures will be with Maine into Wednesday.

"The glacial pace of the blizzard that hit the New England coast early Tuesday will leave at least 18 inches by the time it moves off toward Nova Scotia."

Something is very off, in my humble opinion.

Hearing about a major storm, or two from your grandparents, is a clue about how many of these storms could be expected in a lifetime.
Hearing about the Great Hurriciaine that happened before I was born.
Experiencing the Blizzard of 1978 when I was a young adult.
Being filled with horror as I watched film footage of large house being washed away into the ocean with people in them. The seas were too violent and the winds were too heavy for rescue.
1994? 1996? A harsh powerful winter storm caused damage and death on the shore states.
One serious hurricane experience for me.

These days, the frequency of serious storms has caused the children to have long days at school.

Every year the storms increase in frequency, in power, in duration.

Rhode Island's tall ship has been toppled by strong wind gusts during the snowstorm that's pounding the state.
USS Providence owner and captain Thorpe Leeson says the ship sustained extensive damages when it fell on its side overnight at the Newport Shipyard. It was stored there for the winter.
Leeson says the mast is broken and the hull is punctured. Extra supports were added as a precaution but they couldn't sustain the heavy winds.
Leeson says it's a sad day, but the ship will "come back to life."
Leeson says he expects insurance to cover the damages and plans to get the ship in the water by the end of the summer.
The replica of the Continental sailing vessel Providence is the state flagship and tall ship ambassador.

They did not have snowboards in 1978. Beacon Hill has ski tracks, snowboard tracks, and sled tracks , this time around.

I over did it, digging out.

Special thanks to my kind neighbors.
I never would have made it to the road,
or back home, without them.

The MBTA made promises that there will be busses on the main drag when there is bad weather.

I waited at the bus stop until one of my feet went numb. My body let me know that waiting an hour in the snow was more abuse than it could take.

It let me know how much I had hurt myself and where.

Thank goodness for the corner convenience store.

I drank my tea and hoped.

The bus did not drift past the store window.

I should have known better than that.

The sun is shining, so the MBTA is back on regular business routes.

Which is funny, because the bus stops are filled with three feet of snow.

Or, more, where the plows pushed the leftovers in.

Should I start, singing "Oh Canada ?"

It is official.
Everything for Monday has been canceled.

Snow emergency will be in effect in the city beginning at 6 a.m. A parking ban will also go into effect, with the city planning to tow cars parked on major roads starting at 8 a.m.
Snow began falling across a swath of the northern U.S. on Super Bowl Sunday and is expected to hit New England just after midnight on Monday. Forecasters say snow will become heavy in the morning hours, falling at 1" to 2" inches per hour, possibly during the morning commute. The storm is expected to wind down in the evening hours of Monday, but the evening commute may also be impacted.
In addition to heavy snowfall, wind gusts up to 35 mph are expected to affect much of the region.
Northern New England will be hit with another winter storm Monday, and once again the southern tier is expected to get the most snow.

The National Weather Service in Gray, Maine reports that southern Vermont should see the first flakes of the west-to-east moving storm at about 3 a.m. Monday, and snow should start falling in Concord, New Hampshire sometime between 6-8 a.m. and in Portland, Maine by 10 a.m.

Meteorologist Tom Hawley says southern New Hampshire and Vermont could get more than 14 inches of snow by late Monday.

Massachusetts towns had 33 to 34 inches of snow, last time.

Nashua, New Hampshire- 33 inches of snow from the last blizzard

Did you venture out, to go about ?

The MBTA said to fuck off and walk home.

(Just kidding, about the fuck off.)

They closed off government center. Do not drive into town.
There is nowhere to park.

Good luck with getting there.

What a circus.

The past ten days have overwhelmed Boston's resources.

40 plus inches of snow, does not help the mice run the maze faster.

Do you know how long cars stayed buried, after the 1978 storm ?

The parade ends at city hall.

They are not cancelling the duck boats.

wheeeee!

-20f, tomorrow morning

...for the snow, it snoweth, every day

(Apologies, to any that are offended. I cannot help myself from desecrating that line.)

Mr. Psycho travels up from Virginia to shoot two Cape Cod Coast Guard women.
Now, one of the women is dead. The other wounded.
Mr. Psycho brought three rifles and a handgun, (and some bombs?)

Mr.Psycho set up a roadblock by setting his car on fire.
He ambushed the police, and shot one of the officers.

"Incediary devices found in the snow."

Mr.Psycho shot at all of the officers from behind parked cars.

Mr. Psycho was alive, unharmed, and in perfect health when he surrendered.

New England, under a high layer of meringue that was collected during the week.
Small paths in the meringue were scraped away.
The naked cake paths were covered thinly with powdered sugar on Friday.
Saturday, the powdered sugar was blanketed with a layer of cream cheese frosting.

Next up, marzipan, whipped cream, and marshmallow fluff. Maybe, some nonpareils and some hard crack sugar wafers.

Wet snow, as thick as marzipan ?
Snow, that is as dry and dusty, as powdered sugar ?
Barley malt icicles and hard candy covered ponds.

The Cake of New England will be fully frosted and decorated by Tuesday.

Fondant and powdered almonds will be added to the layers, as overkill, during the coming week.

Then, it will be put in the freezer. Is -6f cold enough ?

60 inches of snow plus 55 inches of snow, and more snow-

Another storm Thursday, and then Sunday.

Gov. Charlie Baker and Mayor Walsh are not having any fun.

Mayor Menino would have known what to do. R.I.P, Mr. Mayor

The seemingly never-ending snowfall gave Boston more than 73 inches for the winter, passing the 72.9 inches that fell during the winter of 1903-1904.

Thank you for the reminder that there is a live rail on some of the MBTA railroad tracks.

If your tram, trolley, or train gets stuck, know where the steel rails are.

yikes

They gave people a chance to use their common sense.

No commuter service into the city tonight.
Only outbound service.

Today, a MBTA Red Line track train was stuck for three hours.
48 Red Line riders were safely moved from a disabled train to buses in Quincy.

The MBTA said the train was stopped on the southbound tracks between Quincy Center and Quincy Adams stations. A lack of power because of a snow-covered third rail caused the issue, MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said.

Will it stop snowing on Washington's birthday ?

Listen close listen hard
To the tale of Violet Beauregard
This girl she sees no wrong
In chewing, chewing, chewing, chewing,
Chewing, chewing all day long
Chewing, chewing all day long
Yeah
She goes on chewing till at last
Her chewing muscles grow so vast
And her face with a giant chin
Sticks out just like a violin
Chewing, chewing all day long
Chewing, chewing all day long
For years and years she chews away
Her jaws get stronger everyday
And with one great tremendous chew
They bite the poor girls tonuge in two
And that's why we try so hard
To save miss Violet Beauregarde

I was outside, singing the words, while I cleared the snow-

"Digging, digging. All day long."

I became curious about where I heard the tune.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory !

BOSTON (CBS) — Mayor Marty Walsh is asking people to stay off the roads in Boston through Tuesday as the city tries to clear out record levels of snow.
The city’s snow emergency and parking ban is expected to continue at least until Tuesday night, Walsh said. Up to two feet of snow is expected in Boston from the latest snowstorm.

Stay home, unless you are part of emergency services.

There will be no T service tomorrow. All subway trolleys and trains will stop running at 7:00 tonight.

Official T statement-

All MBTA rail services will be suspended at 7:00 p.m. This means no Subway, Trolleys or Commuter Rail trains will depart Boston after 7:00 p.m

There will be very limited bus service tomorrow.

Limited MBTA bus service will continue until the end of regular service hours, but customers are advised that connections to subway and Commuter Rail lines will not be available.

Thursday snow, maybe. Saturday snow, is certain.
Temperatures sure to hit zero.

78 inches of snow to honor The Bizzardof 1978.

Good skiing, if you can get there.

Snowed in ? Time for a movie about getting snowed in.

30 Days of Night was a nearly perfect horror movie.
No light from the sun, and the vampires think it is the perfect place for a feast.

Dead Snow 2009

Nazi Zombies are very protective about the treasure they gathered when they were alive. Norwegian hikers are delicious.

yikes

Norwegian is early as sexy as High German.

rawwwrrrr

Conway, New Hampshire on Chronicle

Good skiing.
Good trails for fat tires.
(wow, those are wide tires!)
Good beer.

Today's snow was made in a small quantity.
The largest, most intricate flakes, layered, tenderly.
A few inches of delicate, airy, snowy eiderdown, on the ground.
Just breath, would send them whirling, again.
