Bitching about Boston

No mention of this, in the Globe, or Mayor Menino's site. Were you around Government Center, this afternoon ? Pretty loud. Excellent sound system.

Today- What the heck, is going on ? We are socked in, with fog!

Housing Bubble Burst 1980s and Oil Crisis, 2000 Internet Bubble burst
The effect of the Wall Street Crash of 2007-2008

It is very telling, about what effect downturns had on small towns, when the Fourth of July celebration slides downward.

To go from offering a chicken barbecue and lobster bake, featuring the best, for the Fourth of July parade, to changing the traditions,
and economizing, with a pancake breakfast with entertainment, and fun for the families all afternoon until the fireworks. The final down-
ward slide, hosting a hot dog dinner and modest fireworks.

From what I can remember, as a little child that was still in grade school-
We had a parade, and they marched into town. That was followed by a Fourth of July feast, in town- then everyone enjoyed a patriotic
concert in town. All the grown-ups talked their heads off, and all of us children got together and had fun in the town square park.

That changed. The parade marched through main street. We all went to the fairground where there were stalls for food and games.
There were stalls for the benefit for the firemen, the police, local community organizations. I remember the Elks, the most, because
of their signs. It was an all day affair. There was a dance hall. That ended, and we celebrated the Fourth with family, and at night,
went to a fairground even further away, for the fireworks show. I was still very young, when I experienced my first professional fire-
works show. The loudness of the fireworks frightened me. I did not like it, and I wanted to go home. That changed, and I appreciated
the grandness of fireworks. The crowds were very large, when compared to the modest beginning. People started blowing their hands
off, or injuring their eyes,or burning themselves with fireworks. We were only allowed to have sparklers.

Everything had changed. The town grew and grew. So many new houses, new town buildings, a new hospital, new roads, new bridges.

240,000 people drive into Boston everyday. Then, they leave and go home. That does not count visitors, who park and stay.

A little old lady from one of the bedroom towns, has the right attitude. The shut down is just a blip. Then, again, Boston still has the problem of
few bathrooms, and few parking spaces. Many will be surprised how many of those belong to the Parks Services. It has been perfect weather, for
the tourists to enjoy. The tourists will not be seeing the interesting uniforms, that the Park Rangers wear. I cannot imagine, what it is like for the
tourists in Washington, D.C. They put up barriers, to keep the tourists out. Boston stopped feeling paranoid, last year. The concrete barriers were
temporary. The new metal barriers were stored away, when Spring gave Boston cherry blossoms. (Trees were a gift from our sister city, in Japan)

What is up with that enormous purple baby carriage , in Union Square ?
I have never seen so much graffiti. Most of it points to tumblr

The skies above Harvard Square must inspire watercolorists.
Such a watery sunset. Layers of color, piled on top of each other.

The coyote pups respond with cries, when they hear the ambulance sirens. That means all day. Night has fallen, and they howl.

Once, again, Tornado Alley East is under threat. A wild and windy day for all. More so, for some.

Look out, below! Higher winds than what has been blowing, are expected.

Lost Mail Is Auctioned Off At Center In Atlanta

Mr. LIONEL SNOW (Director, Mail Recovery Center, Atlanta): "No recording devices are allowed out there at all."

Post Office moving Atlanta unclaimed mail auction online

"....a time of rapid change for the Postal Service, last month’s live auction was one of the last. The Postal Service is contracting out the auctions
and moving them all online as soon as April."

GovDeals, the contractor, says expanding the pool of bidders beyond those who could show up in Atlanta on a Wednesday morning will bring in
more money for the cash-strapped Postal Service.

A subsidiary of Liquidity Services, Inc., GovDeals contracts with 5,300 governments to sell their surplus.

After GovDeals’ 15 percent cut, that would leave an estimated 5 percent to 25 percent gain for the Postal Service. The Mail Recovery Center
brought in $7.8 million in revenue in 2011. With those numbers, the USPS would stand to gain between $390,000 and $1.95 million
per year.

GovDeals, based in Alabama, plans to keep the distribution local. Gravley said the company plans to hire five people for a new warehouse in
Atlanta where bidders can pick up the goods, near the Postal Service location where they do now. Gravley said the company is exploring ways
to ship the lots to successful bidders rather than make them pick up in person.

Dead man's ashes and urns, make international news!

NORTHWOOD, N.H. (WHDH) -- Allison Kelley tried to ship the ashes of her husband from New Hampshire to Florida,
where her late husband Chuck’s daughter lives. However, when the package arrived the ashes and urns were gone.

She mailed his ashes in small and large urns to Chuck’s daughter in Florida, but when the package arrived, the tape
on the package was ripped and the urns weren't inside.

“If they fell out the shirts would have fallen out with it, in my opinion. Looks like someone put the shirts back in the box,” Kelley said.

She contacted the post office and they said they'd look into it.

NORTHWOOD, N.H. —The lost ashes of a Northwood woman’s late husband have been found.

Allison Kelley's husband Chuck died of a heart attack in August.

She kept one small urn of ashes and mailed two urns to her husband's daughter in Florida, but they never made it.

The mail recovery center said this week that it has recovered both urns.

“How many times have you heard the words unprecedented, record-breaking, ‘We have never seen anything like this’ in the last three years?”
asked Ellen Douglas, associate *professor of hydrology at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Working with the *Boston Harbor Association,
she helped prepare map scenarios for the city that show large swaths of South Boston and East Boston and parts of the North End under 1 to 4
feet of water during high tide if there is a 5-foot storm surge, about half the wall of water that inundated Manhattan. “Sandy is a wake-up call,”
Douglas said.

In the last century, Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority officials said, there has only been one severe flood in a subway tunnel, in
October 1996 when a three-day storm caused the Muddy River to overflow. At least 14 million gallons of water gushed into the Green Line
portal *between Fenway and Kenmore with such force that it moved tons of rock 500 feet into the tunnel. (I went to take the Green Line
at Kenmore Square, and the tunnel was filled to overflowing at street level. It took a long time to drain it.)

It will not fade. The memory of an elderly woman from one of the Boston bedroom towns, in distress. "This has not happened for 30 years!"
Her home was flooded. 30 years of effort, memories, investment, were destroyed.

An unfamiliar wind began to blow that day. A wind, that was a stranger. I took to wearing snow hiking sunglasses, the strap secured around my head.
The strong wind blew in my eyes, and the gusts made it hard to walk and keep my balance.

That strange wind, comes to visit, once or twice a year, since that year. (including this year.)

From October 4 through 7, 1962, about seven inches of rain fell in greater Boston. The important Green Line Kenmore Station, with multiple
streetcar branch lines, was inundated with flood water. Passengers had to be rescued with rowboats from stranded streetcars in the branch
tunnels west of the station. The following is a description of the event from the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) Annual Report of 1962

March 1993 Storm of the Century, a look back 20 years

Another memory that will not fade. Houses washed out to sea. People on the roofs of those houses, fated to drown.
The winds were so high, the seas were so rough, the conditions so icy, that no boats and no one could be sent out
to save them.

310 people died as a result of the storm. Winds on top of Mount Washington reached 144 miles per hour, which is equivalent to a category 4 hurricane.

20 years ago is a blip in meteorological history, but in terms of technology it is another dimension all together. There wasn't any widespread internet
use yet, cell phones were the size of bricks and only a few elite had them. Weather models had been around for about 20 years, but were most
reliable for a short-term forecast. The Superstorm was one of the first major storms to be forecast accurately nearly 5 days in advance.

Blizzard of 1978

That morning-

I waded through snow. The drifts were much worse. I could not see what was in front of me. I used the walls of buildings to keep track of where I was.
I went back home. My neighbors came to my door to see if I was all set, with food and water. The TV film footage was astounding. I stayed indoors, as
the weather advisory said to. When it stopped, I looked outside. 1978 was erased. The parked cars were invisible. Everything was a towering bank of snow.

A memory I cannot forget- People died in their cars, or died in the snow, on the highways.

(I replaced that painful memory, with the novel sight of people skiing down Beacon Hill. People were skiing, everywhere.)

22 Years After Hurricane Bob and the No Name Storm

1991

On October 31, 1991, a low pressure system, high pressure system, and fading hurricane collided over the Atlantic Ocean, creating what became
known as The Perfect Storm.

Originally called the Halloween Storm or No-Name Hurricane, this tempest slammed the eastern United States, causing hundreds of millions of dollars
in damage. 10 people tragically lost their lives due to the storm.

"This author went to Revere Beach, just north of Boston, on the evening of November 2nd or 3rd, 1991. Everything at the bottom of Revere Bay
was thrown up onto the beach. Dozens of lobster traps, tons of seaweed, and a great deal of ancient boat debris was thrown about the shore.

Revere Beach rests on a large tidal flat, and most of the sand was blown completely off the beach and into the adjacent streets."

October 30, 2011

A freak October nor'easter knocked out power to more than 3 million homes and businesses across the Northeast on Sunday in large part
because leaves still on the trees caught more snow, overloading branches that snapped and wreaked havoc. Close to 2 feet of snow fell
in some areas over the weekend, and it was particularly wet and heavy, making the storm even more damaging.

The snow was a bone-chilling slush in New York City, and was a taste of what's to come for demonstrators camping out at Zuccotti Park
in lower Manhattan for the Occupy Wall Street protest.

Hilltop Steakhouse on Route 1 to close

Yes. It is true. They are closing on October 20, 2013

SAUGUS – Phil Mercurio, 79 and still a hearty eater, was polishing off his Salisbury steak as he recalled the days when the crowds spilled out the
front door of the Hilltop Steakhouse and into the parking lot behind. Hundreds of diners would line up alongside the life-size decorative cows as
they waited to hear their number and seating area (“87 Kansas City!”) called.

“The only time you could get seated reasonably quickly was around 4 o’clock, between the lunch and dinner shifts,” said Mercurio.

He and his tablemates had a lot to digest Thursday, having heard that the Hilltop — a bastion of marbled beef and big appetites —
will close its doors Oct. 20 after 52 years.

Customer appreciation

Hilltop Steak House, known far and wide for offering diners mouth-watering food at reasonable prices, has surpassed the 50 million mark in meals
sold out of its legendary Route 1 South restaurant.

To commemorate this achievement, Hilltop Steak House is holding a celebration from March 9-19

During the ongoing 10-day celebration, diners (one for each table) will get to pick a prize out of a giant Hilltop cowboy hat. The items range from a
catered cookout for 50 people valued at $1,500 to dinners for four, tenderloins, steak tips, gift cards, shirts and hats.

Discounted meals will also be offered to customers from 4 to 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday for the foreseeable future as a token of appreciation.

For $9.95 customers who dine Monday through Friday can enjoy steak tips Marsala, boneless pork chops, broiled haddock, teriyaki steak tip kabob
chopped sirloin, shrimp and broccoli penne and country-fried chicken breast.

Hilltop will also charge $10.95 for boneless sirloin on Saturdays and $9.95 for a roast turkey dinner on Sundays from 11:30 a.m. to closing time.

“We want to give back to the people who helped us achieve this major milestone,” DeRosa said.

One of the myths DeRosa wants to dispel through the customer appreciation extravaganza is that Hilltop Steak House is hurting financially and plans
to close.

http://www.wickedlocal.com/saugus/news/x688585861

Brodin added that Hilltop opened a new butcher shop last year in Weymouth and pointed out the catering business keeps getting bigger.

“The cactus (68-foot neon cactus built in 1968) isn’t going anywhere,” Brodin said. “We’re not closing, we’re growing and doing quite well.”

Czerkawski was initially called a 'person of interest' in the case but Quincy police said after his New Britain court appearance that he will be charged with 11 counts of animal cruelty. Each count carries a maximum 5-year prison sentence if convicted.

A translator was needed because Czerkawski speaks only Polish.

Police said he was working as an elderly caregiver but wasn’t a licensed nurse or registered caregiver.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WHDH) -- The beards are long in Fenway Park, so long in fact that they’ve inspired a southern rock song.

Police bully the people celebrating in Copley Square, at the Boston Marathon finish line. Seven people arrested.

Decorations up. Candy out. Meanwhile in Witch City, Salem, MA-

People planning to visit Salem on Halloween night should be aware of the following:

Salem Police will have new, bright orange Salem Police Tents throughout downtown.
If you see something suspicious or concerning in Salem, say something!

Leave costume weapons - real or fake - at home.
Public consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited.
Triple fines are in effect on October 31st. This means citations for illegal behavior, including public drinking, vandalism, and littering could have fines up to $300.

Dighton, MA

This Veterans Day weekend will be a special one for Dighton Community Church.

The Elm Street community will host a pre-celebration of Veterans Day, ringing its Paul Revere bell
at a church service for the first time in more than five years.

The ringing of the bell will be a symbol of appreciation for veterans.

"It is a special bell, cast in Canton in 1821, where several church elders traveled with 50 pieces of silver
and tossed them into the mold to sweeten the sound," said church member Myrna Santos.

"After more than 190 years, it sounds as sweet as when it was cast. It was rung after installation this week,
and I heard its wonderful sound again."

"The building of this church began in 1770 on the eastern edge of the Great Cornfield of the Pocanocket Indians.
Construction was halted during the American Revolution and the church was used as soldiers farmed and [as a ]
sheepfold. Completion was in 1798. The bell was cast at the Revere Foundry in Canton and purchased by Joseph
Revere in 1821. The tower was added three years later. The church was modernized in 1861 and restored in 1930."

http://www.hmdb.org/marker.asp?marker=66342

Santos said after years of use, the bell became a safety hazard as its yoke developed a crack. So, the church community launched
a restoration project that was completed earlier this week with the reinstallation of the bell.

Celebrating the completion and to honor area veterans, there will be more ceremonies at the church on Sunday.

Dighton Veterans Agent Donald Hirschy and Selectman Patrick W. Menges, a retired First Sgt. of the Army,
will be honorary speakers. The story of the military bugle call Taps will be told by Army veteran Eugene Goodson.
The story of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" will be told by pastor the Rev. David Stewart.

Although Stewart never served in the military, his father flew a plane during World War II.

"We are excited. It will be a service of appreciation. We will thank these people who have given of themselves for the freedom we have," Santos said.

I Drive Your Truck

The strange tale behind this song and all the people, highly placed and just regular folk, that were involved.

Local Ties To Country Music's Song Of The Year

Jared Monti, the 30-year-old soldier who was killed in Afghanistan in 2006.
The song "I Drive Your Truck" was inspired by the story his father, Paul, told NPR.

A tale that begins with woman and the man who shared their grief, of their children, lost by war.
A tale of unearthly and unexplainable links between them and their children. The love and sharing
that spreads in unending waves, from them, outward.

If you’re a country music fan, no doubt you know the tune "I Drive Your Truck," which was named country music’s
Song of the Year last week. What you may not know is that the song has local roots.

The truck it refers to once belonged to 30-year-old Jared Monti, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2006. Ever since,
his father, Paul Monti of Raynham, has been driving that truck.

56,000 flags placed on graves of fallen soldiers
Flags placed at Bourne National Veterans Cemetery

(Some of my family and friends are buried here.)

The effort was organized by Paul Monti, the father of Army Sgt. 1st Class Jared Monti, a Medal of Honor recipient
killed during enemy fire in Afghanistan in 2006 while trying to save a fellow soldier.

Monti battled for years with cemetery officials for permission to place the flags on the markers and was finally granted permission in 2011.

"I do this in honor of my son but more in honor of all these veterans that served our nation, that sacrificed so much to keep us free,"
said Monti.

Cemetery officials had originally said the grounds were designed to display rows of flags along the road, but not near its flat markers,
so that crews could maintain the grounds.

Under an agreement with the cemetery, the flags are now allowed to be placed at markers on Memorial Day and Veterans Day, and removed a week later.

Monti said placing the flags fortify what Memorial Day is all about.

"It's one day a year when people can say, 'thank you for my freedom,'" said Monti. "Because freedom is not free. It costs, and it costs blood."

This happens, more and more, in Massachusetts

HAVERHILL, Mass. (WHDH) -- Police are looking for the driver who ran over a 10-year-old child in Haverhill on Monday. The boy had tire marks
on his shirt when he was rushed to the hospital.

(The 10-year-old victim has been released from the hospital and coming home, but he is plenty sore.)

“He didn’t stop, I was furious at the time. When I heard my brother was all right I was like good,” said Angel Hernandez, victim's brother.

“This is a school zone, so a truck was parked there and the car came around. In a rush and he was coming crossing and hit him. All of a sudden
they took off,” said Angel Cruz, victim's grandfather.

Fifteen-year-old Angel Hernandez was with his younger brother to their apartment nearby after the accident. Police were called and
the boys said a man was driving a specific car.

“It was a Mercedes, gray Mercedes. I don't know what year. E. Class,” Hernandez said.

Haverhill police want to find the driver who took off. They say the boy is lucky he wasn't killed and investigators took note of his clothing.

“They could actually see tire marks on the young man's clothing, so the car went right over him,” said Deputy Chief Donald Thompson,
Haverhill Police Dept.

The accident happened around 5 p.m. near Haverhill's Lafayette Square. The cross walk is well marked, warning drivers to stop.
A school crossing guard said he's not surprised by the hit and run.

“Especially in the morning, it's the worst time. They're racing. It’s almost like road rage,” said Larry Jojokian, crossing guard.

and the kids were crossing. And I guess the car hit him and kept going," said grandfather Angel Cruz.

The driver stopped for a moment [and looked at the victim's body] before taking off.

Channel 5 WCVB, this morning

The victim said, "He stuck his head out of the window [of the car] and looked at me. I could of been dead. He did not care."

Police said they're looking for a gray Mercedes.

Another ugly and disgusting name added to describe Whitey Bulger- coward.

“You won’t even turn around and look at us, coward?”- said Patrick Callahan

The relatives were given their say, by a judge. They would have said their words to Whitey Bulger's face.

Whitey Bulger chose to have his chair turned around. He never saw their faces.

The truth will never wash completely out. The Senate has to be involved, if we want that to happen.

One victim's relative spoke the truth- "He would still be alive today, if it wasn't for the FBI."

Whitey Bulger bragged and hinted about all the dirt he could spill. At the end, he said nothing.

"....Judge Denise J. Casper asked Bulger if he wanted to make a statement. Bulger rose and said, “No.

Whitey Bulger corrupted the city of Boston, and his Massachusetts Senate president brother, Billy M. Bulger helped him to do it.

The team of Whitey Bulger and Billy M. Bulger scared the living daylights out of Mayor Kevin White. He feared a bushwack death.

(There is a larger than life, bronze statue of Kevin White, at Faneuil Hall. )

Whitey and his Winterhill Gang made plenty of cash, dealing guns to the Irish Cause during The Troubles-

"In 1984, the Valhalla left Gloucester, Ma, loaded with seven tons of munitions, including assault rifles, hand grenades
and Redeye surface-to-air missiles."

"The weapons never reached Ireland though. An informant within the IRA’s senior leadership spilled the beans,
and the shipment was intercepted by the Irish Navy."

"There were a lot of losers in the operation, including the IRA and the crew of the Valhalla when they returned to Boston.
Whitey Bulger and his partners were the only winners. Their drug-smuggling scheme let them leave the game with some
serious money."

Did Whitey Bulger scam and betray The Irish Cause to the CIA ? Ask Patrick Nee.

Whitey Bulger is to be sentenced at 10 a.m. Thursday.

*tip of the hat, to Jack Nicholson

History. Fourteen days to appeal. He said the word yes, to show that he understood that he had the right.

There will be no grounds. He had the best that the taxpayers could buy.

$800,000.00 in hard cash, and he claimed he was indigent.

2 life sentences + 5 years. "He extorted money from everyone."

All the victims were mentioned. The money will be dug up, and given to the survivors.

"Unfathomable," the judge said. (That he was not arrested, but enabled.)

He might be shifted around, to answer for other slaughters, in other places.

Waiting for the first circuit to make their decision. 3 justices.

The door will clang shut.
