Bitch is such a vague word. It's used to mean pretty much any undesirable behavior of a female- or a male who acts too much like a woman.

I mean, some bitches i really like. And thay aren'y just "assertive" they are real bitches- strong, oppinionated, dificult forcefull and often unpleasant.

And then there are 'bitches' like when your mother in law sabatoges your marriage or your neigbor calls child servives to 'get even' (these examples are taken from my soap opera in case your wondering- but they do happen.)

Basically a woman is a bitch when she does anything you don't like. And women are as guilty of using this term as men are- if not more so.

I think it would be cool if somebody put out a dictionary of just adjectives, so we could all learn more acurate ways of describing and insulting each other

Ok, so that's not particularly controversial, but what do you all think?

Sweet, rather than dispose of "bitch" or come up with prurient synonyms, I suggest improving one's vocabulary (and hopefully one's readers).

Bitch is not a vague or stupid word to a dog breeder. Otherwise, I tend to agree with you. I don't know when I have ever called someone a bitch, although I have probably done so at some time in my life. Being cognizant of my own many failings, I am reluctant to point out those of others even though I may be aware of them.

I kind of like the word. Has a meaning, I think that most know exactly how it is being used by tone, reference. Gave some examples below from some real authors. What do I know sweety? I'm just "Bitching", "Bitch 'n". Son of a bitch, I don't know what I mean.

Bitch, much like sorry and please has lost most of it's meaning. It is no longer shocking or even particularly bad. People call themselves bitches and mean it. I use the word only sparingly in my stories. It is usually used when one person describes a person they don't like or as a title for a femme lesbian when used by a particularly butch character.

In real life I use it almost not at all, prefering more descriptive words when I am moved to curse someone

I usually shake my head if the person in question is just a side-issue to the topic at hand. The word does pass my lips on occassion. I don't feel any better or worse when it does. Seeing as my readied spoken vocabulary is limited, I might take a page from Pedrita's suggestions book.

I think you take it too seriously. A lot of words are like that. A man can be a "bastard" when he's an asshole, he can also be a "bastard" when he's lucky or smart too. "Bitch" is a convenient pejorative for any woman who's too assertive or aggresive for someone's tastes. It can also be a positive description for a woman who is especially sexually desirable or skilled.

I'm always surprised at how seriously a lot of women take these names. If, in the heat of passion, a woman calls me a bastard or a son-of-a-bitch or even a mother-fucker, I wouldn't take it literally or as a disparagement. (On the other hand, if she called me a cock-sucker it might give me pause. Wouldn't make me stop, but it would give me pause.) Why is it that some women resent these words in spite of the contextual clues that clearly show that the word's not intended literally?

I note that you said you take pause when called a cock-sucker. It is no different for me when I am called a bitch, a slut, or a whore by the very man that I am making love with. You see, it is just a matter of perception Dr. M. It would never make me pause to be called a cock-sucker. After all, I am. And certainly, at certain times I can be very sluty, bitchie, or whorish in nature, but that doesn't mean that I am one, does it? And that's all that we are saying here. It is just a matter of perceptions.

I think you misread me.


It is not about personal offense. I am actually all for the word *bitch* in the sense that I think woman *should* be bitches (as opposed to doormats) I dont think that we should always soften our message and make it pleasing (you should probably know that about me by now)

I just think it's a stupid word because it basicly means *anything* that a woman does that is disapproved of. It's a stupid word from a literary point of view because it's too vague. If a woman doesn't let you by cigaretts without your id, she's a bitch, if she harrases you about the housework, she's a bitch, if she tells your son that there is no such thing as santa clause, she's a bitch. Rebacca Demorne in 'the hand that rocks the cradle" was a bitch. Obviously, all of these women do not diserve to be in the same category.

I really was refering to my own usuage of the word, though rare, I have decided that it's just to imprecice to ambiguous and to all encompacing. In most cases, its just a poor choice.
